If they patched the game so an RG on GR 70 has 10 billion hp and not 10 trillion hp for an example, and then toned down the players' damage accordingly, wouldn't that reduce server stress? See, i didn't mean that they would add another calculation of divison / multiplication along the way, but rather to reduce all of the numbers in their inception...

no that would not make a difference. as i said, the size of the numbers is not imporant.
If they reduce damage from the players and hp of guardians the situation would still be the same except numbers being smaler. that would not make it better.
you can reproduce the lag on grift 35 or 25. Just fish a high density rift and do not equip a weapon. It will lag like fuck

If the numbers get so big that they are no longer a 32 bit integer, and considering the fact that D3 runs on 32 bit only... Wouldn't that mean that the compiler is emulating 64 bit types and operations onto them, therefore creating a much heavier process on the server in terms of memory usage specifically?

Yes and no. Its true diablo is a 32 bit operation, thus it cannot compute numbers bigger than 32 bit without increased effort.. However
that number is 2147483647 when its signed integer. But make the damage numbers signed is most like not the case since damage is not negative.
So it will have an unsigned integer which maximum damage number is : 4.294.967.295
For comparision the max int for 64 bit unsigned is: 18446744073709551615 . Thats a lot of damage.
Now begins the fun part: You clearly have seen damange number higher then 4.294.967.295 so its safe to assume that a bigger datatype is used.
On 32 bit applications you can have a 64 bit integer too. but its stored in two memory locations, split up in the first and second half. so they are effectively two unsigned ints.
However this comes with a big performance hit. And clearly that is a problem in d3. Because it makes frequent use of this.
Allowing numbers to not get bigger than 4.294.967.295 or convert to 64 bit application, might increase performance. Granted this is exactly what you said earlier (reducing the numbers to gain speed up) However i did not understand you in that way that you referred to this technical limitation because your appraoch was a little bit too vague.
If you change your statement to : change d3 to 64 bit or make sure damage does not get bigger than uint.max then i would have totaly agreed.
While deviding 100000 damage by 100 it would not make a difference to work with either 100000 or 1000. While 14.294.967.295 /10 would make a difference because now the number fits in a 32 bit number again, However you do not solve this problem by division but rather make sure numbers do not get that high.
Also i assume the performacne gain from this would be marginal. The bigger problem is the many state changes and server client synchronisation.
But i have to correct myself. yes you are right , making numbers smaler can increase performance. but this has to be done in another way than you suggested and is only the case for certain big numbers. Which your initial post did not make clear (you probably do not have the required background knowledge).

I am sure that your "make numbers smaler" appraoch would only influence performance by a bit because i can reproduce the lag problems without putting out so big numbers (as i said go to 25 grift and dont equip a weapon - low damage - still lag)

    good intent -- maybe..

    will i test it? no

should you test it : no

modifing the exe will probably trigger blizzards warden making you eligible for the next ban wave.

    i would be very carefull

    Quote from KaiserQwerty»

I used to be completely against seasons, I mean why give up months of work farming gear and paragon right? Season one I played only till lvl 70 to get my transmog and then deleted my seasonal character so no one could ask me to play seasons with them (also needed another mule). As season 2 approached I became more and more tempted to try it out just to get a change of pace. Sure the season exclusives are neat but it's not that hard to wait for them to come around when the season ends. I went in thinking "lets try this and if it sucks I'll go back to normal before the end of the week". The only time I've spent in non-season since S2 started has been to delete characters to make more seasonal characters. I can't say you will feel how I do but to everyone who thinks seasons will rob you of all your hard work and effort I hope that at some point you give it a shot. I understand exactly why you don't think it's worth it because I felt the same way. I hope that if not in season 3 at some point you will try it out, find a group of friends and make a call to try it out for 2-3 days. Maybe you will love it like I love it, maybe it will reinforce your position that seasons aren't worth it, either way that's ok at least you'll know. There isn't that much to lose, just try it once for a couple of days and whatever the outcome at least you can be sure that you've made the right choice for you.

    quote for truth :D

i felt exactly the same way and did exactly the same thing

yeah RNG doesnt mean you have the same chance for everything .. so if there are 10 possible affixes, there is not a 1/10 th chance for each affix to roll.
Its a weightet stat distribution system.
Blizzard knows which are the most desired stats, and they make them rarer than e.g vitality.
However 60 is a very smal sample size to actually get some good analysis of this weighted system..
From what i see you are completly missing Life on Hit - whereas whenever i get a rorg it has life on hit..

so maybe try to get 600 ? :D
anyway thanks for your dedication. every bit of data is good

posted a message on How to break 40+ GR with blizzard wiz?
first mistake : no hydra but mirrorimages -> u dont need those . they keep you from kiting the mobs, because they tank some. -> thats not good for firebird gameplay (read the firebird 101 thread)

2nd mistake: bane of the powerfull is not good at riftguardians , which is the biggest problem with firebird.. we can ramp through hoards of trash because our spread is so good, but singletarget,... its meh, but still we can do it. (not so barbs before patch).

Take bane of the trapped (with follower thunderfury of course - u dont want to be near the mobs for the 15 yards aura)

or take the other gem .. which is also starting to spread : Pain Enhancer. However B.o.Trapped is still better for RG (with Templer!!)

3rd mistake : No Unity - i dunno if you dont wear it because you play in group, but for solo you should consider it.

you have enough dps to easily punch gr45 with that anchient Maximus. In general your dps is more than enough

But you die on solo for 40+ because you dont have enough toughness. Unity will supply.. Just double it...(hey JAy wilson)

For comparison: i have after the patch 21 mil toughness (with buffs ingame) - with unity 42 mil. That is easily enough , if not overkill. I can even go to 50mil...

    - OF course you would have to drop that rorg and replace magefist with firebird. but as i said you easily have the damage.

4th mistake : No strongarm bracers.

That debuff of strongarms is triggered from blackwhole.

Those are the things that are really holding you back in solo.

    Now some additions:

The belt : its ok, if you take hydra, because it now scales with attackspeed.

But if you die, why not take string of ears ? 30% melee damage reduction is huge.

You lack Arcane power regeneration . Many people play with 2h weapons and are doing fine because they play good.

They have to be really carefull when they cast blizard.

If you go with a one hand weapon and firebird offhand, you could take the magefist again and have apoc on the offhand.

This allows you to make some more mistakes without losing time in the grift.

From my experiments a super duper wellrolled sunkeeper with firebird OH may not be better dps wise than your 2h but it is more gracefull on your "skill"

In theory your 2h might be better but in action it might be different you have to test this.

Or now with 2.1.2 -> Serpent Sparker + Tasker and Theos + FB offhand + wiching hour + attackspeed bracers - i still have to test this.

For now i can say before the patch i finished grift 40 in a good time after 3 tries.

I had a succession rate for grift 39 of about 50% (before the timer ran out).

so what Horazon99 said is absolutley correkt. wizzard depends alot on what rift you have. but you can make of for a little with good playstyle "skill" and the right gear choices.

then there is also the luck component ;)

Yesterday i tried out the patch and instantly (due to the new mob density) i went through 39 40 41 first try and was about 30 seconds too late for grift42 also on my first try. But grift was full of winged assassins and it was a long tube level. which kinda sucks , because i want to kite ever more ever more ever more and run around the mobs in big circles --- if i have the space and mob density..

All without any anchient items or anything. (http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Jalatiphra-2532/hero/45765602)

I think i can push up to 44 without any changes depending on the quality of the rift.. then i need to up my damage. toughness should be sufficient.

Hope i could help you a little

Why is everybody saying the pvp in d2 was soo great ...

I played d2 for almost 10 years, and the thing which annoyed me the most was the pvp.

    it made no sense..

You either were oneshotted, or you moved around in circles all the time.. how was that fun and engaging...?

it was actually the same as brawling is now, except you went out of town and not in a different zone. and you had maybe 2 seconds to react instead of zero now.
still it was far from a good experience from my point of view

if you really want to progress with your char, play firebird. all else is subpar.

its annyoing to hear that, but all i can say is blizzard is working on it.

of course experimenting is good, but as a newbie you should focus on orienting on existing builds and modify them to your likings. most builds allow for at least som customoization,

whereas creating a complete new build will most likely always result in something which is not really effective.

Of course if you play casually only and dont have the feeling that you "need" to go to t6 . everything should work fine in some way.

However i get a feeling that you want to progress further, and you're at a position where most newcommers are.

For example you dont like the red numbers on the gear if you swap it. thats understandable but unreasonable.

i can easily buidl a firebird wizzard with 500.000 dps on the char screen which will outperform every build you posted here while runnin 900.000 char screen damage.

The char screen damage is only one part of the whole damage calculation. Other stuff is much more imporant. like elemental damage, elite damage, buffs in general, legendary gem bonusus etc etc.

    An easy example are Gloves:

if you have gloves currently with attack speed, crit damage and crit chance and int and you find a magefist legendary which has 20% firedamage no attack speed, crit damage crit chance and int exactly the same values as your old gloves.

What do you think will happen ? The magefist will give you a red number on the comparison tooltip, because they lack the attack speed which is factored into the calculation of your char screen damage.

However there are two things which you need to know:

the 20% fire damage increase are not calculated into your charscreen damage. But they will increase your damage by exactly 20% if this is your first elemental damage increase anywhere on your gear ( it gets more complicated with more elemental damage increase on gear, but for now lets keep it like its your first bonus)

well because of the attack speed missing you might lose 10% damage on the character dps . but your damage is in creased also by 20%

so you obviously should take the magefist - IF and only IF you are running a fire build (skills with element fire)

Secondly: there are builds which make no use of attack speed NONE.. adding a million attack speed to your build while running firebird set withblizzard and mammoth hydra will increase your chatacter sheet dps by A LOT , but your effective dps will not rise because attackspeed has no effect on anything in that build. So you can completly scrap it from all your gear.

Of course ONLY when using the firebird build.

Other builds benefit greatly from attackspeed, for example fire disintegrate.
