I really wonder this too. I know that I'll be higher level then my friends but I will want to play with and help them. As in they play the difficulty they are on and I join in to help. I don't want to hurt their xp gain just by joining their game.

In this scenario I don't care about my own XP, I'll get that from solo-play.

From everything I've gathered, it seems like the model Blizzard is taking is this.

    1. Anyone can be rushed through a difficulty as long as they can get there. So, a level 1 can sit in the main town, while a high level clears the content for them.

    2. That low level player will gain quest xp, but not monster xp because the high level player is too high to gain xp from monsters, but quest xp is always given to all players, reg of where they are or level.

    3. Blizzard has level checks to get into higher difficulty levels, so the low level player actually needs to level, to be able to advance to nightmare, hell, and inferno.

    4. When they said a player acutally needs to go back and play through the content to be able to advance to the next difficulty is their way of saying go back, play it for real, level, get appropriate gear and then move on. Their nice way of saying group with level appropriate players, and play the game how it should be played, not just getting run through or power leveled so to speak.

Now, if we can only find out some info on when a player out levels a monster, ie how many levels above monster level before a kill yileds 0 xp ( note that monsters always drop gold and items reg of level ).

When in a group of 4, how would the xp be affected if we had a level disparity, say within 1-2 levels of each other? 3-4 levels of each other? 5-6 levels of each other? Is it directly based on the monsters we are fighting? Is it based on the level of the highest player in the party vs the level of the monsters we are fighting?

I think it's based on the monster level only. In the beta if you were level 1 with party of level 13's you'd get almost no xp at the skeleton king area but the monsters at the starting area gave normal xp even with the higher level characters helping you kill them.

Thats not entirely accurate. If you started a fresh game, at level 1, and invited a level 13, and you started the game ( in beta ) from the overlook road, IIRC any monster you killed gave you no xp, the only xp you gained was from turning in the quests, because quest xp is always gained, regardless of player level. That was why a level 4 would join a SK group, and sit in town, and when you got to the SK, he could be ported in, and get full quest completion xp which was a lot and almost a full level or two at that level.

I know that when i was level 11 or 12, and did a playthrough in the 3rd and 4th quest areas, most of the monsters didn't give me any xp. The monsters in the crypts were level 8 so i think once i was 11 or 12, they didnt give me any xp anymore.

I think right now its 3 or 4 levels higher than a monsters level, 4 IIRC that you do not gain xp from them anymore. A level 8 monster stops giving XP to a level 12 player, ect.

Now, if that info is correct, then in a party, if you had a level 12 and a level 10 and a level 8, and you were killing level 8 monsters, would any of the players gain xp. I'm thinking no, based on the info where a level 1 grouped with a 13 gave no monster xp to the level 1. That might be too high of a level disparity, but if it falls under the rule of +4 levels to the target monster = no xp gain, then that is correct.

Really wish I tested this more when the beta was live.

Have any of you guys tested this?

Quotes from the best buy Q/A today:

    http://d3db.com/news...-qa-transcript/

Guest-728: when you want to play with a friend who is much lower level than you, are you stuck playing the furthest ACT or DIFFICULTY they have achieved?

JasonBender: To Guest-728 They can jump in to your game at a higher level (up to the highest difficulty they've achieved), even though they might miss story points. If the lower level player creates the game you will be limited to their story progress. You're not limited by ACT, but you are limited by DIFFICULTY.

Guest-224: Say for example that I am playing a high level character, but I want to play with my friend who only has a low level character. Will me joining his game ruin the experience for him because I could just blast through the content and make it too easy for him?

JayWilson: To Guest-224 You could blast him through the content, but his XP will be greatly diminished to the point that it's not very beneficial for your low level friend...unless he likes spoilers. But that's what Youtube is for. :)

Guest-503: Is "rushing" a character possible? Or are there some kind of restrictions that keep a player from getting to Nightmare/**bleep**/Inferno in a significantly shorter time period than usual.

JayWilson: To Guest-503 A higher level character can help you jump past content within a difficulty, but you get greatly diminished XP, so you really need to go through legitimately. We have hard level requirements for difficulty levels, though, so no shortcuts there.

This info was very helpful, and clarified a few things. What I'm looking for is exactly what the penalties are and how severe they are.

How many levels above a monster does a player have to be to gain 0 xp per kill from that monster?

If I'm grouped with a player who gets 0 xp from a monster due to level difference, and I would get xp from killing it solo, would I get any xp from the kill if we were grouped and both contributed to the kill? If he/she killed it for me?

When in a group of 4, how would the xp be affected if we had a level disparity, say within 1-2 levels of each other? 3-4 levels of each other? 5-6 levels of each other? Is it directly based on the monsters we are fighting? Is it based on the level of the highest player in the party vs the level of the monsters we are fighting?

I am trying to figure this info out pre release because playing with the same people from 1-60 we want to know if having level differences are going to reduce xp gains and how that will affect the group's experience.
