I can agree with this. I know some people find it hard to get into Path of Exile but they have done essentially this. The active skills are changeable but also level up (and scale better than D2's skills), but your underlying passive attributes are the "permanent" aspects to your character and dictate what skills will suit your build, what gear is best suited etc. This means you can have a general idea of how you what your character to be like without locking into skills that don't fit your playstyle the way you thought they might.
I don't want to see a D2/TL2 style active skill tree return, however there is something rewarding about having your skills improve not because you found a weapon with higher DPS.

I too hope this is a chance the game will go in a new direction. Even if it has to wait til the first expansion and we have to make brand new characters because of major changes. I won't mind starting new characters because I came to realise (after about 7-8 months of denial) that in D3 we play classes, we don't make characters. This is current an Action Item Play Game, not Action Role Play Game. While items are important in this genre, it is everything in this game. And I'm gonna stop before I start ranting about primary stat...

Can you see in the game data map tile sets?
I'm curious about some potentially missing areas.
If you recall the gameplay release trailer from 2008, it opens up with a section that has a shallow pool of water which all the ghouls climb up to. Then at the end of the map, there is a room with 2 curved stairs heading up northwest. Pretty much every other section in this trailer made it into the game (most, if not all is Cathedral tile sets), but those sections are not.
Not to mention that there are those spots that look like they could have a dungeon but don't (end of Stonefort, mid section between Halls of Agony 2 & Prison bit).

On a side note, you should only judge a class's 'power' based on a first play through with no gear hand-me-downs. That is what it will feel like in the full game. Playing level 13 characters in a level 8-10 environment...Posted in: Diablo III General Discussion
Beta is giving us the wrong impression of what it will be like (you won't have enough gold, crafting materials etc because you will be spending them just to keep up)

For example, my wife thinks the Monk is way to powerful, because she is good with the Monk and gels with that play-style.
I on the other hand feel the Monk is weak, because I don't gel with it's play-style.
For me, it's the Wizard that wins, but purely because it's how I like to play, and the tactics and techniques gel with me.
I think Bliz has done a great job of balancing.

See to the left of the monster, there's a flying demon thing carrying a soldier, who he drops over the edge. I'm loving the detail!
