What can I say.. if the error is on Blizzards' side, then you don't lose the character, haven't seen that happen since 2 years back. When the problem is on your side, the only advice is .. get a connection that doesn't fail.
World of Warcraft arena in paticular has been excluded from multiple esports, for example MLG, events due to it's high unbalancedness (+ several details, such as no spectator mode). Perhaps with less classes and lot less class-flavorness in D3 we will have a stable balanced arena.
