This is my Witch Doctor PvE build :
A summoner build made to outlast the enemies in the hardest difficulty. Because for a first playthrough being safe is important, even if you are a crazy voodoo master from the jungle :>
Pets are the core of the build, Zombie Dogs and Gargantuan support by 3 defensive passive skills.
Runes are also leaning towards durability. Dogs get a life leech for them and their master and the Gargantuan get a permanent poison AoE allowing him to debuff enemies with Bad Medicine effect.
For offense, I choose a powerful single target ability (Flaming Dart) and a deadly AoE (Corpse Bomb) to be efficient against groups and bosses alike. I add Haunt to keep DoTs rolling and complement the sustain damage from pets.
Note that those 3 abilities cover also 3 schools of magic, so monsters resistances should not be an issue.
I finish the build with a bit of crowd control. I add a rune to Haunt so that it become a 15 seconds spammable slow and choose Horrify as my last spell and designated "panic button".
I think this build is safe and polyvalent, making it a very solid base to for a first playthrough all the way to Inferno. Add a Templar or an Enchantress follower and the Witch Doctor become really hard to kill.
