I would compare witch doctors to warlocks in WoW. I can't say for sure because I haven't played D3 yet but from what I've seen they have a lot of damage capability especially aoe and CC but when it comes to burst damage on the witch doctor that is probably their weakness. They don't have an ice block type spell or blink. Granted they have the aoe fear spell but still if that fails for whatever reason then they are probably going to die, and if you don't get that spell then you are going to be pretty vulnerable.
