To some extent I think you guys are right, you shouldn't have lots of spirit to spend, but rather use it wisely.
But on the other hand, this could as well be just a low level issue. Think about the Wizard or the Witchdoctor. Those classes are supposed to be limited by their ressource (otherwise the ressource could just be removed from the game), but at low beta levels it rather feels like unlimited. Especially as a Witchdoctor, mana regenerates almost as fast as you can spend it.
It's all global (= for all characters), but there are class specific achievements such as .... defeat the Skeleton King with the Barbarian, the Monk, ... defeat him with all classes... You get the idea.
By the way, there seem to be seperate achievments for doing all this in co-op (not for each class then though)... lots of good reasons to beat the game several times.
Messed around a little bit in beta and actually... it seems like Dashing Strike breaks your combo, no matter how fast you are. So does Lashing Tail Kick by the way. On my level 7 monk, just the Mantra and that Healing skill can be used within a combo. Attack speed around 1.50 if I remember correctly.

For sure. Without a rune, shift+attack works fine in beta if there's no enemy anywhere near, so with rune it will do as well
It's quite similar to Deadly Reach: The third attack goes pretty far as well, and you can just stand there and shift+click
