posted a message on Giving White Items Some Value
I think it would be a great idea to have whites become like a 'base' for crafted items.

In response to the problem of finding the specific white for a specific recipe, what they could do is make it so that you can use a variety of weapons e.g. 1h swords and axes only, and then the recipe uses the white as a base, and the damage / armor is based off of the white - kind of like in diablo 2 with runewords.

This way, while the majority of whites will still be useless (as intended) there will still be that 0.1% of whites which will be valuable simply because they are make a very good base for recipes.

posted a message on Logical step by step analysis of changes to white items
Diablo II captured the loot piñata feel by dropping a lot of crap, mostly arrows and bolts, and we of course still very much want that feeling of item-explosions. To do that we need to be able to balance the value of items to how many we’re throwing at you.

This I kinda agree with. True dropping endless supplies of white items may not enhance the accomplishment of finally getting that item you were hunting for, however what if you were running around killing swarms of mobs and *nothing* was dropping? That would seem rather dull and empty too..

posted a message on Logical step by step analysis of changes to white items
Lets take a logical step by step analysis of this whole 'white items' discussion:

    Firstly:
Blizzard designs the game so that in game gold will have real value. (Hence it is worth picking up and selling white items)
Blizzard also implements a crafting system whereby one can salvage mats from lesser items (white items included) and craft them into better items.

    Secondly:
Now after a lot of in game testing and observation, Blizzard concludes that due to the large number of white items dropping, gold and mats are being collected too quickly and easily - hence lowering the real value of gold and crafted items.

    Thirdly:
Blizzard decides to do something about this in the form of REDUCING the gold sell value of white items to a measly amount, as well as making said items NON salvageable. White items become almost completely useless, other than to make desirable items seem better in contrast. A Blizzard official said it best: "White items will not be worth the inventory space. No one will pick them up."

While Blizzard's methods of improving economy balance are debatable (E.g. Why go so far as to make white items completely useless? Why not just lower their salvage/sell value?) , we cannot deny the fact that these changes were made to improve economy balance and hence improve the game as a whole - players themselves have stated how quick and easy it is to craft desirable items from garbage item mats.

Thus at least in my view, we can only trust that these changes were made to improve the game as a whole. These changes were not made on the fly, but were made after detailed discussions with experienced game designers. Perhaps in order to achieve economy balance, white items really did have to become litter on the ground..

    Thoughts?

posted a message on What did you get for Christmas?
    Quote from Al0cer

Missus got me a Wolverine costume. Complete with claws, fake muscles etc...
After pointing out to her that she routinely makes remarks about my lack of maturity at 28 years of age, I had to point out that this gift was not helping me make any reforms.
It then took me 30 seconds to become the man who is the best at what he does, and what he does...
    Photos would destroy the interwebs

This made me crack up -- you're very lucky to have someone who can be so fun and playful! Who said marriage is all about routine and serious business???

I only got one gift this Christmas -- an iPhone 4S from my father and stepmother. But I am content! :Thumbs Up:

posted a message on Bonuses for Polearms + Other large weapons
    Hey guys,

Ive played Diablo 2 back in 1.10 for about a year and remembered that polearms and the like were only generally used for mercenaries. This was due to the fact that they were so slow, had low damage (relative); hence it was almost always better to dual weld 2x 1handers or 2x 2handers.

Now in the items guide on the D3 site they state : "Any polearm will extend the reach of its wielder’s arms noticeably, allowing them to fight foes from slightly farther away."

So I am wondering is this description literal? Will polearms actually provide an in-game bonus to melee range?

I think this would be a great idea -- not only would it encourage use of these massive fearsome weapons, it would also add a lot of variety (Afterall we wouldn't want everybody to be running around using only swords/axes and maces) and flavor to the game. E.g. Imagine a WW barbarian with wider WW damage radius..

Basically what I am getting at is that I hope polearms will become a viable weapon choice throughout the entire game, and not end up as an 'inferior' weapon choice.
To achieve this, Blizzard needs to provide some incentive for using a polearm; be it longer range, higher damage, or some other bonus -- otherwise I feel that polearms will once again be overshadowed by swords/axes/maces.

Cmon! Encourage the use of the more unconventional weapon!

P.S: Correct me if I am wrong, but I am writing under the impression that polearms in D2 did NOT increase range. Its been so many years now that I can't quite remember whether they did or did not.

Personally I really enjoyed the humor - adds a warm, friendly feel to your videos that many other videos simply lack.

I really hope the D3 community as a whole will continue to be as welcoming, friendly and helpful as what I've experienced so far!

Edit: Oh and can't wait for your Witch Doctor video :wd:
