I wouldn't be surprised if we see patch 2.5 with something interesting at Blizzcon and then a PTR one week after Blizzcon, for a 2 month testing period (Season 8-9 transition end of January). But of course could also be completely unrelated, and more likely this is just another sign that Diablo 3 is going into "long-term maintenance" mode and although small features might still come every now and then, development of the Diablo franchise is moving on to something else.

Personally, I think you emphasized the least likely of the 2 scenarios he laid out. I think it is more likely

That is the part that is more likely. The D3 engine is laggy in a 4 person group, with DoT builds like WW being impossible to implement, so Blizzard nerfed them into the ground because they can't fix the lag.
It's time for a new, higher performing, engine, and it's probably time for long term development, not slapping another bandaid on a D3 game that has been flawed from the start, and has had bandaid after bandaid slapped on it.

Whether Blizzard does D4 or lets Diablo lie fallow for a few years while working on D4 or whether they never do another Diablo IP, they'll keep the servers up, and they'll keep changing seasons.

Why? Because Blizzard wisely values customer loyalty. There is a reason that you still see patches to D2 and SC and WC years after they were released.

They will also work on new content, whether or not it is Diablo content, but they will expend a small, reasonable, amount of resources keeping their old customers happy.

I imagine the sun rising is an indicator to some folks that something big is coming at Blizzcon.

I guess if the game is going into maintenance and there is going to be no new content, you may as well do 2 month seasons instead of 3 month seasons. Paragon grinding for 2 months sounds way better than paragon grinding for 3 months. Lets face it, anyone who isn't paragon grinding is probably doing 2 week or less seasons anyway.

posted a message on [Ideas] Patch 2.4 and 2.5 suggestions

Make the new tier of gear only drop at T13, or GR60 or higher. Give smore farming to look forward to in the endgame. Make the new items as rare as Star Metal Kukri, Furnace, and other rare legendaries used to be.

Give the late game something more to look forward to than +5 mainstat.

posted a message on [Rant] Hardcore is dying

It's not surprising HC is dying. The game as a whole is dying, and Hardcore is a smaller community than SC, so HC was likely to be the first to feel it.

Let's face it, Blizzard's solution to the mess of Vanilla was to create an endless grind of Paragons, and an endless series of GRs. It's a recipe for player burnout, and now that Blizzard isn't making big changes season to season, and there isn't anything new and exciting, there just isn't much reason to play.

My advice is to skip a season or two, and check out other ARPGs like Grim Dawn and Path of Exile. At least the developers are still making new content for those games. One advantage of playing Hardcore in Grim Dawn is that like Diablo 2, the game can be played solo on your computer, which takes out all Desync and Lag deaths from network and server issues.

But that would likely require a major change in monster mechanics, game play, CC abilities, healing, etc. Essentially, the game would have to become more MMO like.
Which is why D4 is probably a better move than D3 expansion. So much really has to change to make the end game more compelling, and not just a +5 mainstat grindfest, as well as a Fish for GRs until you get that 1 in a 1000 GR so you can set a record. The endgame of D3 as it stands has all the fun of a slot machine, waiting for RNG payoff, while all the fun is in the early and mid game where there is still real progression in terms of gear and skills. There is a reason D3 is a ghost town a few weeks after the start of a season.

I agree with the whole idea of 'the higher the difficulty, the better the loot'.
Would be so nice to grind it out, starting at normal, going all the way to whatever they might call it in D4 :P
Yeah, it really makes the D3 seasons somewhat dull and lifeless when you have all the loot you need in the first week or 2 of the season, and the rest of the season is just about better rolled versions of the same item. There really isn't the "I got this new piece of uberloot which will change my build" type of decision making in D3. You just farm for the items you need for the build you want, because they are all going to drop soon enough if you know how to farm, use kadala, and use the cube to craft.

Anyone who is expecting much other than D2 HD anytime soon is bound to be disappointed.

Funny how there is no announcement of new stuff at Gamescom when most of the D3 news this year was developers leaving the D3 team.
