I definitely feel like hardcore is the way the game is meant to be played. You take your time, you clear areas around elites, you carefully chase golbins (not into black areas), you farm gear where appropriate instead of corpse bashing your way through the game. And you really feel like you accomplished something when you clear an act on inferno. I could not play the game any other way. Better luck with your monk, they are pretty beefy I hear.
It's really all about preference, but there becomes a point where you need to use common sense when it comes to choosing items, especially on hardcore as the item pool on the auction house is a complete joke. Dex/vit/ar are amazing, but how could you pass up a justice lantern with a sacred shield? That is something I definitely couldn't.
When it comes to shields, I look at block % before all else. I only look at ilvl 62 and 63 shields, and if it doesn't have 20% block I just ignore it. To me there is no point buying a half decent shield and spending my gold on an item that will be worth less than I paid as soon as I buy it. Mediocre items lose value just as fast gold does, so put your money in items with perfect stats as much as possible.
The boot thing is more of a quality of life bonus. Movement speed is very nice, when you get boots that have it you will understand why people claim that it is a must, but nothing in this game is mandatory, its all about preference and playstyle. And seeing as how we are on hardcore most of the quality of life things don't pertain to us as we have 1% of the population donating to our auction house's item pool so we basically have the table scraps compared to sc.
Speaking from the hardcore side, it does seem like it's dead, even with the lack of a RMAH. I have tons of gold I am TRYING to spend on upgrades, but there just isn't anything worth buying. Hopefully 1.04 and the supposed legendary buffs will get people playing this game again, but as of now, at least from a hardcore point of view, i feel like one of the 5 people left playing.
