To answer the original question, yes Blizzard has messed up with the beta. You aren't "stressing" the servers by only inviting a couple people.
But no, the hype is not dead for the game, just the beta. A lot of people were expecting to get in, and about .1% of them did.
1.) As Bashiok fucking directly stated: You don't invite 1MILLION people when you don't even know if your infrastructure can handle 100. You slowly ramp up so that you can learn the threshold that the server can handle before it bonks. You really don't understand that they are using a completely new archictecture do you?
2.) Anyone that actually assumed they would get in other than press... and then get angry about not getting in can fuck themselves. Diablo 3 isn't BF3... this isn't a pre-release... this is a literal fucking beta. We are lucky that they aren't keeping this a completely closed beta anyways.

"Also, any proceeds from the sale of items in the currency-based auction house that have been deposited into the Battle.net account will not be transferrable to the third-party payment service account. "
Blizz explains it the RMAH in detail here.

Watch this video,
11:06 - MOON PHYSICS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldMOdxKs8S4
At 11:06 you can see that zombie went up and over a ~10 m tree, based on approximation of our ~6ft hero, in ~3 seconds.
a=Voy^2/(2*h)
t/2=Voy/a
So, 8*h/t^2=a
Thus,
8*10/(3^2) = a = 8.9 m/s^2 ~ equal to EARTH(Especially if you consider drag)
In fact, to get the moons gravity of 1.624 m/s^2 the tree would need to be,
8*h/(3^2) = 1.624 => h = 1.827 meters tall, which is likely SHORTER than our hero.
Sir Isaac Newton just said PWNED!!!

I would hardly base any complaints on this video.

Diablo items are like promiscuous women. Some items are rather common, while others are unique and very attractive.
At first the attractive items are like all women, virgins, until a few lucky adventurers finally gets some. And after someone does finally get this attractive item, it sort of loses a bit of its luster, its appeal. And over time, as more and more people acquire said item, it becomes rather common place. The item becomes a whore, if you will. And people no longer feel the sense of accomplishment when acquiring it. Ohh every now and again, a new adventurer will come along and brag about acquiring said item, but he is quickly ridiculed by the veterans. The veterans will then of course advise the young adventurer to check his stats, and advise him to upgrade as soon as possible.
Such is the life of a Daiblo item.
PS:
This is just a joke, I only thought it up while trying to rationalize the perspective of the hardcore Diablo fans regarding items. It is a rather shocking how similar these two things are, and just how prevalent this socially backwards mentality is.
The biggest misconception in Diablo is that my gear hurts you in some way.
As if somehow, if I have and item it somehow cheapens it for everyone else.
