I'll be sceptical. It's one of their "multiple diablo projects". There will be a new character or skin for Overwatch. Along with announcement of D3 port, D4 is very unlikely (at the very least it won't be announced for another year or else it would affect D3 sales). Looking at a long stasis in D3, a new character is very likely. And probably it will end like this
actually the thorns sader does benefit from A LOT from primals. thorns as a secondary stat is increased by 30%ish on EVERY item. so, if you happen to farm a full LON-thorns crusader with primal ancient gear, it should be way stronger than with just ancient.
This actually means that total thorns (summed up from all items) is increased by 30%. Believe or not, but 30% is 2 GRs higher (each GR level enemies got 17% HP more, I think I've read this some time ago). Difference betweenancient and primal is marginal, especially due to diminishing returns on main stats and no change on secondary stat range (crit, area dmg. etc). Full primal over full ancient difference would be 20% base weapon attack, 10~15% primary stats, like 15~20% resists, effectively increasing GR level by 1-2.
How does this make sense when Witch Doctor basically already fills the Necromancer niche?
Difference between Necromancer & WD:
Necromancer uses skeletons and can resurrect enemies to fight for him.
He uses bone spells and curses.
He has a Golem that defends him.
He lets corpses explode.
Where is the similarity to WD except that WD also uses pets.
Btw. Demon Hunter has pets aswell.
And dont forget the Crusader Pet build out there
And what would happen if we would reskin some skills? Just identical skills, but slightly differing effects?
"Necromancer uses skeletons" - Fetish Army - reskin summons skeletons. With belt and other stuff, he could have similar army to D2. Also fetishes with blowpipes could be reskinned to skeleton mages. Too bad we cannot resurrect enemies though
"He has a Golem that defends him." - gargantuan is too similar to golem, easy reskin
"He uses bone spells and curses" - as for curses: hex, piranhas, horrify, haunt, (yeh, we do not have charm nor blind), for bone, how about darts reskin to bone spike and wall of zombies into wall of bones?
"He lets corpses explode" - probably the only thing WD really misses (aside from resurrect)
As for amount of summons that WD can have (necro could have 2-3 times more in d2), if they added necro in d3, summon skeletons would summon 3-5 skeletons probably, golem would not differ from gargantuan and resurrect would only work on normal mobs (non elite non boss). Also, take into account 6-skill limit in d3 (missing amount of skills I could keybind in d2).
As for other class comparison - why not add amazon or templar as well? So what if both DH and amazon use bows, they are 100% different classes, same goes for crus and templar.
Aside from that, through all the skills from d2, probably only shapeshifting did not make its way to d3 (aside from warrior's berserk), so getting a druid would be quite alright, though many of druid's skills were taken over by wiz

Is it just me, or europe time is 1h off?
"Because many Necromancer skills are focused on corpses being available,
you should anticipate swapping skills based on your current situation."
Kinda, you cannot swap skills in GRs
PS: anyone noticed Disintegrate buff?
