posted a message on Name change to match twitch account

My Twitch username was different from my Diablo Fans username. I have successfully merged accounts, and when I go into settings and accounts it does show my twitch account, but on THIS site, it still shows me the Diablo Fans name.

I play this game for personal enjoyment, so if it were an upgrade I'd use it. As far as if I were to sell it... I'm not entirely sure, on the current market it would be worth multi-millions, but the current market is over-inflated. I have not spent more than 20,000 on any one item.

Blizzard has said that they're not currently allowing UI modifications (as opposed to WoW, where they not only allow it, but encourage it). You are using 3rd-party software to make adjustments to the game, something explicitly forbidden, but then get ready to rage quit if Blizzard comes down on you for something they explicitly said you shouldn't do.

That's like speeding down the road and making threats if a cop dared to pull you over. Sure you may be only going over the speed limit a few MPH, but those cops shouldn't enforce it!

    True.

But then, getting a virus on your computer becomes that much more of a problem.

Why is it a problem? My passwords are stored out on the internet and I can access them by anything with access to the web. If my computer dies, I haven't lost them.

Tell me... oh random person on the internet with perfect security knowledge and insight into Blizzard's systems.... what the REAL reason is?

Oh it's this site? What a let down.

Oh a serious note, if you use LastPass (free for desktop, $1 a month to use it on mobile devices) you can have high entropy, lengthy, random passwords that are unique to every site you visit and you don't need to worry about one site's login compromising another's.

When the servers are stable, that is when Blizzard draws the line.
That is the only line that matters.

Well you know, with people huffing and puffing that they're quitting or getting refunds and the like, it just means the rest of us that actually enjoy the game will have greater and greater server stability.

    posted a message on Izual
You know it's funny, I probably died 10-15 times on Izual on normal, but never had an issue with him ever again. In fact I think I killed Diablo easier than I did Izual. I ended up having to change my build to something specifically designed to fight him and I would just run around kiting him around the little circles til he died.

It wasn't the best build but I think I eventually killed him with something like: http://us.battle.net...YXQS!aZb!aZZaZa

or something similar. My problem would be that I could get him to about 25% health no problem, then I'd get caught in a freezing thing and then either he'd catch up and kill me or I'd be killed by his minions. I just basically changed my tactic from trying to kill him to survival first, doing dps second.

When I fought him on later difficulties I had venom hydra and he was a pushover.

    Quote from Tiths

I have a feeling that even if Blizz were to give away authenticators with their games and eat the cost for them there would be a huge outrage of people whining about how "it takes too much time to put in the code." "this is dumb" "why should I have to use this? Blizz your security sucks." etc.

No you're absolutely right. When I made my guild all have authenticators, even after I posted a way they could get one free without needing a smart phone or any financial investment of any kind, I still had a hunter that steadfastly refused to get one under any circumstances. "I don't care how easy it is, I'm never going to get one." I also had people outright turn my guild down because I required them, saying that they would just go find anther group that didn't care. It doesn't matter how good the security solution is, or whether its free, or anything. Some people are just going to refuse to have any added security, but want to hold Blizzard responsible if their account gets compromised.

Not gonna discuss or anything, but the question that came to my mind is more like : Why do people need to get an authenticator ?

In my 15 years "online gaming career" my only account that got hacked (and it got hacked numerous times) is my Bnet account, and I have a shitload of gaming account, almost all with the same email and password.

They don't, That's why people are getting hacked, because they are not obliged to have an authenticator.

If they don't have contact to malicious software they won't get hacked.

But one thing that you should remember when you say you have never been hacked before is that you have never played Diablo III before and there haven't been any online-only game with that much orders in so little time before. Hackers focus on the most played games, and that's the time to focus on Diablo III.

Blizzard said that the number of hack reports is not bigger than any WoW launch, so there's nothing new here, just hackers developing new specific ways to get passwords and people falling for them.

When I said "why do people need to get an authenticator", i was thinking of "is blizzard doing their job concerning their account security ?"

My concern is not only about Diablo 3, but about Bnet accounts in general. Sure as you said, the popularity of Blizzard games is part of the problem. Yet in my experience, everytime i heard about a recurrent hacking problem, it was on Bnet accounts. I've played almost any "big" mmo/online game from EQ1/Counterstrike to SWTOR/Battlefield 3, and neither me nor my friends had so much hacking problem. It's common knowledge that Bnet accounts always had security issues. So maybe (i ask myself, not trying to argue anything) part of the problem comes from Blizzard, and maybe they don't take care, as much as other companies, of their account security ?

That's a little bit tin foil hat, but I'll engage it anyway. Perfect security requires perfect code. Perfect code is not feasible. You might make the case that Battle.net is old and they should have been able to fix any security issues by now. But how old is Microsoft, and why haven't they made windows perfectly secure, why do I still have to download security patches every second tuesday?

You could make the claim they're not doing enough, but even if you had proof they're not doing enough (which no one does), what IS enough? Is enough to where no hacker anywhere is able to gain access to any system? Sometimes hackers don't even need exploits, many times they can trick someone into installing something on their machine that takes it over for them.

Sure you've listed other MMOs you've played that didn't have security issues. Is that because their coders are better and have somehow made perfect code, or is that because they're less of a target than Blizzard so hackers don't bother with them?

Luckily you don't need a smartphone to get a free authenticator.

Not the point of the post, his assuming that everyone should have a smart phone. Also, if this is how you get it "free":
    Quote from Dilbert

In addition you ACTUALLY can run an android emulator or your computer, and then run the FREE authenticator off that.

Forgive my ignorance if not, but this sounds illegal. Plus, if it's just that easy, why not explain how to do it?

Hehe it's not illegal. OK quick explination: if you're writing an android application, you want to actually test your program before you sell it on the market. Since there are numerous versions of android it's not feasable to buy a phone of each size and type and manufacturer to test your app on, that's just too expensive. Therefore Google (and other smart phone providers like Apple and RIMM) offers a way to run a piece of software that emulates a smart phone. You then can change the emulation to test various types of phones so you can fully test your app before releasing it.

Now, this is a full-fledged version of android, otherwise it wouldn't be a proper test. Since it is a full version of android, it is trivial to install an app on it, since putting an app on to test it is the entire reason the emulator was created in the first place. Since you can put apps on it, you can put the authenticator app on it.

Now 2 years ago I required my old WoW guild to get authenticators, which meant I dealt with the same arguements everyone makes... "oh I can't afford $5"... "blizzard should just give it to me free"... "why isn't the game just made perfectly secure?"... so I posted a forum post of how to do it.

However if I were still in charge (and I stepped down when I quit WoW) I would recommend a different path, since the one I posted takes a while to set up. Maybe something like this. Or even better, just google "authenticator emulator" and you get a whole mess of ways to do it.

To anyone that says they can't afford one, but pays for a WoW subscription... that's just stupid. Even if you're too poor to have a smart phone or iPhone Touch, you still pay $15+ a month for WoW, but you can't afford a one-time charge of $5?

In addition you ACTUALLY can run an android emulator or your computer, and then run the FREE authenticator off that. So honestly the only excuse I possibly could think of that a person doesn't have an authenticator is that they don't WANT one. If they don't want one, then there's nothing anyone can do, but don't come crying if your account gets hacked.

Also Blizzard does not make money off authenticators, the price that they charge for the authenticator is the same exact price that the manufacturer charges to make them, there is zero profit made by Blizzard in the deal. Blizzard does not have their own manufacturing factory, they rely on other companies to physically make the devices. That company charges a flat fee per device to make the authenticator, and Blizzard passes that price straight onto you.

Asking Blizzard to provide a physical one free is kinda silly too. The manufacturing company still charges the same amount per device to make them, if they offered them free then Blizzard would have to eat the cost. What then? They would simply raise the price of each of their products $5 so while it would say "free" you're actually still paying for it, the difference being you no longer get a choice whether to pay for it, even if you would have preferred spending no money on the free app.
