Their view on items is that it's better to have a crapload of useless items drop as opposed to the occasional useful item. When you played Diablo 2, did you even think of a non-magic or better item dropping as even BEING a drop? When you were playing with friends, and you killed something that didn't drop a rare, but dropped an extra white item, did you say "wooo double drop off Pindle!"? I'm assuming not.
They are just generating screen clutter to disguise the fact that the items that you do pick up aren't as interesting as they were hoping they would be. I have no idea what other changes they are planning on making, but none of the ones they just announced make me go "oooh, that's way better than what it was before"
They can continue to modify this game all they want, eventually they either have to release it or eat the who knows how much money they spent developing it. I'm sure when they release it they will sell a lot of copies and that most people here will buy one, but seriously, I grew bored with the Beta in under a week, I'd rather start new characters in Skyrim than play more Diablo 3 and I don't really see that changing even after release, they just don't seem to be making it that much more interesting. That being said, I'm fairly confident when the game comes out I'll buy it and play for awhile, but I doubt I'll bother playing to inferno at all and I probably won't play past normal on more than one character if that. If their goal is to make the game lasting, this isn't helping, but if their goal is to sell one-off copies, they probably, correctly, figure "who cares"?
TLDR: Meh, release delayed, boring changes that don't mean much.

Since you can in theory kill mobs faster with multiple people, I'm confident that what will happen is a group of four will power through the game, if one person falls, the other people just keep going. No leveling the blacksmith, no crafting, no side quests, no whatever. Get to Hell and then play acts III and IV a couple times to get to 60.
Personally, I don't intend to rush. I plan on going to work like normal, living my life like normal and playing whenever I have gaming time. It'll probably take me quite awhile to get to 60, but this is a GAME, it's supposed to work for me and my free time, not something I have an obligation to in some way.
I want to play the game too, but I'm not a kid anymore and don't have the time or desire to sink infinite time into a game for no real reward. Gaming is supposed to be what you do for fun in your freetime, not what you DO and all the rest of your life is to support your gaming habit. That's not a game, that's a job!

I hadn't even noticed the date on the original post when I started reading, then I saw it and figured that this is all completely outdated now.
At this point, that skill is actually almost useless in comparison to getting other passives, not because it isn't the fastest method of regen, I think it is, but because other methods of regen also have other nifty abilities that simply auto-attacking don't generate.
But all this is going to be based off play and such, that it's hardly even worth discussing more until they make all the changes live.

I think both terms are pretty much interchangable.

You will see the same think from the Hardcore people who will say that anyone who doesn't play hardcore is some kind of carebear or something. It's because they have an inferiority complex and try to build themselves up by putting other people down. There's no right or wrong way to play one of these games, if you like PvP, play that, if you like Softcore, play that. Heck, if what you enjoy is playing each class through normal difficulty and then quitting, that's fine too. It's a game people!

Actually, I'd be willing to bet it's actually a pretty decent reference. The problem is, we have no idea to judge what the reference is. If Blizzard told us that when 25 people are in public games 500 people are in private games and when 100 people are in public games, 1800 people are in private games, we'd have numbers we can work with. But you can't solve the equation X = Y * Z without having some other information. (Yes, I know technically that equation is already "solved" as its in its simplest form, shut up)

I personally doubt that even 10% of players are playing in public games at this point. I almost never see anyone talking about playing with other people, or playing in public games.
That being said, that's my personal opinion based on my observations, only Blizzard knows how many private games there are at the moment and they have already said that they are not telling us!

That would be awesome. But considering that they don't even animate the items, I can't imagine them wanting to animate the text.

Point 2: Have they completely given up on giving people access by selecting them at random? It seems like all the keys currently going out involve a contest of some form or another. I concur with other people who have said that this isn't really a beta, I'm not sure what exactly it is, but if you're really trying to test things like system compatability, wouldn't you want to invite different systems, not people who have Facebook accounts?
Point 3: There is no point there, I just have this here so my post won't end wish bashing Facebook, as I understand that they send "overweight anthony" to break your kneecaps if you see anything about them that's seen in a negative life.
Point 4: Oh crap, RUN!

Is it worth the time though? I imagine that many runs must get kinda boring.
Still, I suppose it's what I'll be eventually doing in inferno! And hopefully also in all rares and legendaries! Or maybe set items, I've got my eye on...
Well, we'll see. Awesome info though, but it's definitely going to be changed at some point soon.

That being said, at least this means they aren't likely to have to mess with art and cutscenes to make it sell in the UK, but I'm still curious about Asia.

No, you can't use ranged skills with a melee weapon, at least none of the builds I have seen permit that. You also can't use melee skills with a ranged weapon, so there you go.
You can't use a ranged skill with a melee weapon, it just won't work, the skill will most likely be grayed out.
Ummm...As to that last question, I suppose you probably could wield a sword and crossbow, but I'm extremely unsure why you would want to do that. That would be the worst of both worlds, giving you useless melee ability and seriously damaging your ranged damage.
