Personally I am currently running with a 1-H+shield, as thats the only decent upgrades I found whilst taking the first few steps in Act V last night after RoS launch.
But before RoS I quite liked the 2-hander rather sluggish playstyle. In terms of comparing 2H to DW to SnB (sword and board), DW and SnB are similar in terms of playstyle with the SnB option having a heavier focus on defense obviously although shields come with very decent offensive stats. However there's a big difference in playstyle between DW+SnB and 2H, and some skills work better with one option than with the other, rend and furious charge are great examples of this as they are based on weapon damage.
Fury gen is much slower with a 2-hander than with DW/SnB, and it can take some time adjusting to the difference, I know I had a hard time my self.
In terms of numbers to shoot for, a good rule of thumb is to have 10 crit dmg for every 1 crit chance. Likewise for comparing resists to armor 10 armor for every 1 resist.
As far as paragon, I change it up and experiment alot. In general I aim for the movement speed cap though, so whatever I'm short of the cap goes into movement speed and then the rest into strength if any. Either crit strike or dmg for offensive, depending on which I need the most. Have been running with atk speed as well for boosting effectiveness of life on hit. My weakest point was all res when they introduced the new paragon system, and I feel you get a pretty good value for your points in there, however life regen is quite powerful as well. I havent needed % life, nor armor due to high ammounts of str and vit on gear. For utility it's a toss-up between life on hit, works well with DW/SnB and high atk speed, area damage if using alot of single target abilities I kinda want to try a resource cost reduction build as well at some point. Really pick your weakest point.
To be fair, the discussion was about "items worth picking up" not about "buy gold and then ignore everything." The OP wanted to know if he should skip certain item types to increase his XP/hr. I don't think he was at all interested in more AH drama llamas. (...)
For a long while I've been picking up everything, as in all rares and legendaries, but I'm getting the feeling that, thats whats been holding me down. I'm averaging around 80M xp/hour when picking up everything.
Just timed a run where I only picked up rings, amulets, 1-handed weapons which ended up at 120M xp/hour.
Am I right in saying that pretty much everyone uses a mix of crafted-, set and legendaries for all slots except 1-H weapons and jewelry?
Replaced my hellfire ring, which items should be the next ones to focus on? I've got around 8M gold atm, and from what I can see decent climbers with movement speed and a good skorn are both at least 12M, but I'm thinking I should aim for one of the two as the next upgrade seeing as I can't replace my Lacunis until I get movement speed climbers.
And thanks for the advice so far, picked up my hellfire replacement rare ring for 2M earlier today!
There's still room for improvement, but the new shoulders and amulet has allowed me to swap some of the vit gems for str gems in addition to boosting my EHP.
Been crafting a bit, no real luck yet so far though. Focusing on amulet and shoulders, got a couple of 400 stat shoulders that were quite decent, they however lacked all res, so despite being a pretty big EHP upgrade kinda useless.
Looks like I might have to wait with the Ice Climbers and thus changing out my Lacunis even when I drop the str to around 100 I haven't been able to find any affordable ones.
I've been practicing not using Bash and instead going with Overpower - Killing Spree, taking some time getting used to, but I'm getting better at it. Hardest thing I find is getting started in Festering Woods and getting the 5 stacks. Fields of Misery and Weeping Hollow isn't as much of a problem.
If I were to swap DW for a Skorn, what kind of minimum stats should I be looking at then? I'm guessing I want at least 1200 DPS and then 5+ LS and 140+ CD and 250+ str.
Yeah I realise that shoulders are probably the best place for a defensive upgrade, with the vit shoulders being able to roll 300 str in addition to a good chunk of vit. Craftable bracers could yield similar defensive upgrades, yet that would lead to an attack speed loss, as well as having to get the 12% movement speed on boots. But I kinda get the feeling that getting a pair of Ice Climbers with similar stats to my current ones, and movement speed is beyond expensive.
I do Decaying crypt and Scavengers Den when running Fields of Misery.
I have been trying without Bash, I just can't get used to it. I guess I just need to try harder, and experiment a bit with different key binding. Cause you're completely right money, it's pretty much a wasted slot.
I am currently farming MP7 FW ---> Leoric if < 5 stacks ---> FoM ---> WH, killing all elites and picking up all the rares without having too many issues.
Now my question is, where to go next? I don't really have a lot of gold to spend, and RNG isn't really lending it self to me in terms of drops atm. So I'm looking for advice on cost/effective upgrades that can be achieved within a reasonable budget, that I could work my way towards.
As far as defensive stats go I guess I'm a bit low on all res, and maybe HP if I were to move to MP10 other than that I think I'm pretty much set.
The way I see it, my amulet is my weakest item. Should I try my luck crafting one? I'm guessing I'd need to hit at least a weak trifecta to beat my current one. I've been looking at a better EF but seems like they're quite expensive same goes for a higher dps mainhand. My hellfire ring isn't perfect but I think it's quite decent, is it worth it though? Or should I look for a rare with cc instead? My lacunis are pretty bad, but I kinda need the movement speed. I could work on crafting shoulders as well, but compared to my other items I don't think my Vile Wards are my biggest issue.

Like you I was facerolling everything, untill I looked away for a few seconds today and lost him at lvl 51 in Act V.
My softcore crusader looks like this:

I swap around the one defensive skill quite alot, haven't really settled for anything yet. I'm not completely sold on provoke either.
Based my build off the sticky:

Exactly!

A bit of both, my thought was that it's not worth picking up items for slots that people rarely shop for on the AH.
