Here's my advice for people who want to kill time with other games while waiting for Diablo 3 to come out.
Play different game styles.
What I mean by this is that, obviously when we have been waiting for years and years for a specific game to come out, we tend to have very high expectations as to what the experience of finally playing that game will be like. For example, OP said that Amalur got him bored after hours of gameplay because he was comparing everything in the game to what he thought D3 would offer. Of course, this is natural, it is a very similar game style and when you get something and know there is something better around the corner don't you have that constant itch behind your ear?
Well, happened to me too, I searched for lots of games that were similar to Diablo. Thing is, Diablo is just the best in it's category, and if you need to search for something similar, chances are that nothing will quite get to you the way Diablo did.
So, how did I solve my problem? Easy. I started playing the games I had always felt curious about but, for whatever reason, never actually got to play. For me it was Starcraft 2 (had never played strategy games) and HoN (also had never played tower defense). Both are awesome games when you get used to the playstyle. Starcraft 2 has the best competitive enviroment and community by far. HoN is a great game to play with friends and can be pretty addicting after you get past the initial confusion that are team battles, altough is it less beginner friendly.
Don't play games that are similar to Diablo. I doubt you don't have any other game styles you enjoy. It's not long we have to wait after all so just enjoy something different and have a good time for the next 2-4 months (:
Save the loot frenzy demon slayer inside you for Diablo 3 and you'll do fine!
Other games I recommend:
- Mass Effect
- Final Fantasy (playstation 1 and behind)

you said it and I quote:
''Learn to read, I said the only part of your logic that makes sense is the part about 900 people not getting access being unlikely.''
that was my WHOLE logic. the starcraft 2 sales was a COMPARISON to gain perspective on more or less how many people could be opted-in.
All I meant was: if out of the 900 people who commented on facebook, 0 got beta keys, then that would mean for every 901 who opted in, 1 would get a key, at least.
I know this isn't a fact (and by a miracle all the people who commented happened to be just the people who didn't get keys) but like you said that is very unlikely, impossible actually.
and trust me, people would comment saying they got the keys right away.
