I wonder how they will have people test the RMAH. Maybe just give everyone fake money in their account? It will be interesting to see if anyone is able to make a "profit" during this testing. It should have implications for the RMAH after release.

Someone on the Gamespot PC forums said they got one yesterday. Maybe they just didn't check their email for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few people were invited. It's just that there are millions that want in the beta, but <1% get invites each wave. There's only a tiny chance anyone from the forum community will get one.

My prediction was right about no release date at Blizzcon. =) Still, they said it's coming sooner than expected. Maybe it could be January release? I still feel like there's a lot of design stuff up in the air with Diablo 3. Some stuff we know about like Demon Hunter resource changes. I bet there's a lot more stuff behind the scenes they haven't decided on yet. They can't say a release date until the basic design is finalized.

It's basically a round table between Blizzard devs and fans. Fans can discuss things with the devs more personally than at a panel. I don't think there is any stream coverage of it. If you look at the map, it's just a little conference room where players can meetup with developers.

It's a mixture of both but not an even mixture. In Diablo 2 for how I played, it was about 80% cooperative and 20% competitive. Competitive was only when I was bored of the cooperative monster killing. Like we finished killing a boss or got through a quest. People were bored and decided to do some duels. I usually lost, but I enjoyed the break from doing the same thing over and over. This is most likely what I will do in Diablo 3 too. Mostly play cooperative monster killing, and PvP only occasionally to take a break from the normal game. But what gets me addicted is getting new and better items, not beating everyone at PvP.

posted a message on D2 Ladder Reset: Season 9
I bet their decision is related to Diablo 3 release date. They wanted to make sure there is enough time for a new ladder before the new release. Assuming a March release, that leaves about 5 months for this ladder season. Starting a new ladder season will help people stay focused on Diablo a little more (many have gone back to D2) while they wait out the delay.

This is good news. My video card is kind of low end (GT 240). I was hoping I could play on Medium, and it looks like I will. The article says the game has Low, Medium, and High Quality settings. Does this mean there is no Ultra yet in beta? It seems to me Blizzard could add a higher setting for release to appease gamers with high end rigs. It won't be Battlefield 3 quality, but textures and shadows could be a lot better in Diablo 3.

Koreans have a very different culture and completely different game tastes. Blizzard just happened to get lucky that Brood War was so popular there. Very few Western games become popular there.

I think Korean government's rejection is probably what others have said, they consider it gambling. They could say the game is only for age 18+ or 21+, but kids can still get access easily at their cafes.

posted a message on No Mod Support for Diablo 3
    Mods
I still don't understand why Blizzard couldn't include an offline single player mode. I know they wanted single player people to have an easy transition to multiplayer, to be able to use their single player character in multiplayer, but I don't know if this will help much in getting more people to play multiplayer. I don't think the tradeoff is worth it. I think mods could eventually be developed where you install the game in a separate place and install some files that modify stuff. The problem with that is it cuts off the server from the situation. If Blizzard ever found out you were using a mod, they could ban your account and you lose all the years you put into your characters. I don't think I will ever use a mod with Diablo 3 because of this.

    UI addons
I think the problem with UI addons was that it made the game easier to play. You had more information about your character and the world, so you could make better decisions than someone who didn't. This forced Blizzard to tune boss difficulty around people using all the tools available including advanced UI addons. Then some UI addons became "essential" to beat bosses, which Blizzard did not like. They have always said they wanted UI addons to be optional, but it didn't work because guilds forced people to use addons. I don't think Blizzard will do UI addons in their future MMOs.

They could create the capcha server side and just send the image file. Bots could still get around it with image recognition software. If you've ever used optical character recognition software, you know they do an okay job but never 100%. There's usually a few characters that don't translate correctly. That means bots will take a little longer when creating new games either with multiple guesses of the same capcha or having to creatie new games to get a new capcha. I don't think Blizzard will do this though since it is a small hassle for the end user.

Yep, a lot of WoW machinima is done like this. Someone writes a separate program that can open up the game files. You can load up any part of the environment and add character models to it. You have full control of the camera and can also animate the models using the built in animations or your own custom animations. It's nice that someone is making a tool for D3 though.

I've never cared too much about watching stuff live. Like with the World Cup or Olympics I know some people get up early (in America) so they can watch it live, but I don't care one bit sleeping in and watching it at primetime. This seems to fit with what Blizzard said about rushing. You can no longer just have a buddy kill the act boss for you and skip to the next act. The only way to finish an act is to beat all the quests. Of course, your buddy can join your game and just carry you through all the quests. Even counting just travel time, that will end up being longer than how rushing was in Diablo 2.

I'm sure WoW has more panels than the other two games despite SC2 and D3 being more popularity among non-MMO players. They've also had 3, going on 4 expansions with most Blizzcons focused on the next WoW expansion. As much as I'm bored of WoW, there are 10 million other people who aren't, and they are paying for monthly subscriptions and ingame pets/mounts.

Lately, they seem to announce full new games at the Worldwide Invitationals, so I don't expect Titan or any other new games announced at Blizzcon. Most likely the WoW expansion will be the big announcement with HotS as another focus. I don't think there will be anything big for Diablo 3. Just some minor announcements like people said (CE contents, class update changes, etc.) Release date is a possibility but seems to be less likely since they just announced the delay. I'm not sure they can make a decision that fast. They just announced a delay in September and only a month later they have to come up with a release date. Doesn't seem likely to me.

There will always be hacks. It will be harder now with everything done server side, but there's always holes in the network code that hackers will exploit. Some hackers will even package their hacks into programs they sell to general people, who then use it for some ingame advantage. Blizzard will hopefully be on top of it though. I know in WoW they take a while to ban botters and hackers to get as much information as they can, but in Diablo 3 waiting that long means a lot more damage is caused since everything can be converted to real money at some level.

This is really the most people that have ever been on together? Under a hundred people? That's insane. Their servers are probably going to have to deal with 10,000 times that many concurrent people the very first day. I realize that servers are scalable and all, but that's a huge difference.

I'm sure they know what they are doing, but I would expect that there are going to be some significant technical hiccups the first couple of days.

It seems to me they only have a small internal server for the beta. When the actual game releases, they will probably have a whole server farm to handle all the people. Right now, though, they just have their internal test server, and it can't support more than 2000 players or so.

Did they say the class changes would be added to the beta? I'm pretty sure they said beta wouldn't be changing from its current state other than bugfixes. Really the only thing they are testing is stability of the servers and how different hardware works with the game. They don't need to update the classes in the beta to achieve that goal. I am assuming we won't see the class updates until Blizzcon and the non-Blizzcon public won't be able to try them out until release day.

posted a message on What about ladder?
I don't think so. One of the blues (Bashiok maybe?) said they were thinking along the lines of CoD games. Every match whether you win or lose, you get some "xp" that goes toward your multiplayer rank. Winners get more xp than losers, but you never lose xp. Everyone can eventually get to the highest rank. I'm not sure what the ranks would be for Diablo 3 but CoD games have military ranks like Sergeant, Corporal, etc. Good players (and teams) will get to the highest rank much faster than bad players (or teams), but everyone can get there eventually. It's just a matter of how much time you put in.

Edit: I realized your probably talking about a PvE ladder. No, to that as well. There are no ladder resets or anything like that. As long as duping is under control, they don't need ladders like that.

He makes it pretty evident he doesn't want to play the game in that video above. Here's just a transcript of a short segment:

I really don't think they should be legitimizing the idea that you buy power, and it is brazingly that, and nothing but that. "Hey, let's buy power with methods that are outside of the game." I despise that idea, without question. I do not play games where you are able to do that. The games that I play that have microtransactions in them, DDO and League of Legends, do not allow you to do that.

That sounds to me like he isn't going to play Diablo 3. So if he does play it after release he must have changed his opinion on the game. But he hasn't released any video saying that. It makes him look bad.

Seems like the only person on youtube not completely in it for the money and actually cares about the progression of the game is Force.

My thoughts exactly. He does this big rant about how he won't be getting the game because of the RMAH, letting people buy their way to power, blah blah blah. Next thing you know he is covering the game like he never said any of those words. This is still beta though. We'll see if he gets the release and starts doing lots of videos. I do like his WTF videos about new indie games, but hate when people criticize a game so much and end up somehow forgetting about it.

I do remember them saying this... but nothing compares to blizzard cinematics, I still remember being in awe over the end of Act 2 :).

Also they haven't released the intro movie yet, the teaser trailer is something different than the intro cinematic they haven't shown to the public yet.

For SC2, the intro movie (when you start up the game the first time) was the same as the reveal trailer. Maybe the D3 intro movie will be new. That would be cool, but I don't expect it. One of WC3's trailers turned out to be the intro movie. When the same thing happened with SC2, I assume it will be like this for all future Blizzard (non-WoW) releases. Companies (like Blizzard) are always looking at ways to cut costs (especially Activision).

I can't see them doing more than 1 per act plus the intro movie, which they already released. In one of the documentaries, Blizzard said pre-generated cinematics are really expensive to do, millions of dollars each. It takes them about a year per cinematic with a whole team working on it. Ingame cinematics are a drop in the bucket by comparison.

Currently, I'm planning on making one of each class for both normal and hardcore modes. That fills up the 10 slots perfectly. Hopefully if they add new classes later, they will have new character slots. If not, I would probably just delete my most neglected hardcore character. I wouldn't mind paying for more character slots to maintain the 2 characters per class though.

To start with I will be playing Monk. Whenever I get bored, I will play the other characters but most times I will play monk. Also, I won't be rushing to get the best gear. I'll probably be more interested in getting each normal mode class to 60 before I get into farming gear.

posted a message on lack of death?
Think of the difficulties in Diablo 3 like the ones in Starcraft 2.

    Normal = Casual
So easy a well-trained chimp beat it.

    Nightmare = Normal
You might die occasionally but usually are fine if you know how your skills work and have an okay build.

    Hell = Hard
You'll probably die on all the bosses and some of the champions/super-uniques. Regular monsters won't be that deadly, just time consuming to kill until you get good gear.

    Inferno = Brutal
You will die a lot even with good gear. Expect to spend months gearing your character before you can solo it. Most people will want groups for this.

Yes, Diablo 3 is overall easier than Diablo 2 until you get to Inferno. That's just the way games are these days. However, I expect Inferno to be like a brick wall that will take all but the most hardcore many months to beat (solo that is). Inferno is the endgame. If the average player can get through it in a month or two, people will quit the game fast and Blizzard has made it too easy.

Having a mouse and keyboard connected to a PS3 seems kinda silly and ruins the "console" feel of the system. Also why don't you just buy a better computer if your old one can't handle it. I'm sure you can get a better computer for less money than that of a PS3 :P
Clearly thats not the case if you already own a PS3.

And the most likely reason they only have PS3 job listings on the site is because they're probably going to end up putting it on the PS3 and 360, but they, like most developers nowadays, are going to make it for the PS3 and bring it over to the 360. Apparently doing it the other way around is considerably more complicated.

I very much doubt D3 would end up being a PS3 exclusive considering Blizzard has never been a company that limits what platforms they release games on (just look at how long they've been putting games on Macs) and Activision rarely, if ever, releases PS3 exclusives.

Yeah, the 360 just uses a slightly modified Windows OS. They can pretty much directly compile their PC code into Xbox code using the devtools Microsoft gives them. PS3 on the other hand is different than any other system. The Cell processor has all different instructions than Intel processors, and developers have to spend a long time working with it to get good performance out of it.

Microsoft on the other hand requires all developers to use Xbox Live for online play plus players have to pay a yearly fee to play online. My guess is a Diablo 3 for PS3 that includes both single and multiplayer and for Xbox with single player only. (Blizzard will not let another company (Microsoft) control their online system.)

It will be nice in some aspects (not having to get 237 Str to wear a freaking helmet), but this also means that Witch Doctors and Wizards will be vying for the same Plate Mail that a Barbarian does.

Inevitably, there will be some legendaries/uniques that are top tier and benefit ALL classes to a certain degree, and only having a level requirement means all classes will go after it.

Think like Stone Ring of Jordan, but there's also Stone Plate Mail of Jordan, Stone Wizard's Hat of Jordan, Stone Berserker Axe of Jordan, and Stone Leather Gloves of Jordan; all classes will be competing for the same exact armor pieces for several slots, instead of just rings and amulets.

While it's possible for Wizard and Witch Doctor to equip those items, in practice it won't be a problem. Melee-class type gear will only have stats the benefit melee. At the same time Spellcaster-type gear will only have stats that benefit spellcasters. So sure a Wizard can equip some Plate Mail with bonuses to melee damage, but why would they when they can equip a robe or light leather armor that gives them extra spell damage. Basically, there is "enhanced damage" from D2 that affects melee damage while there is another stat that does the same thing for magic damage. The small armor bonus won't be worth losing spell damage over.

No more need to have the perfect str and dex for gear. :)

posted a message on Runestone "themes"
I checked out the new runestone videos, and it seems like each runestone color has a certain theme to them. I like this a lot. Consistency between classes makes it easier to switch classes as well as understand how runestones work for other classes you don't play. You can better gauge the value of a runestone for other classes without having to know exactly what the runestone does for them.

Crimson - Increases the skill's damage.
Indigo - Increases the skill's area effect.
Obsidian - The PvP rune. Increases to survivability and utility against other players.
Golden - Reduces the skill's resource cost, but depends on class. e.g. increased Monk Spirit regeneration.
Alabaster - Afflicts enemies with a status effect (confuse, knockback, freeze, etc.).

All of these seem to be in addition to the normal damage.

Sorry if this is already known, but I didn't see it anywhere.

Yes, I also wonder about the charms. I would hate to go back to D2 ways of everyone's inventory filled with charms.

posted a message on Will you buy normal or special/collectors?
I'm going the digital download route, so I'm stuck with the regular version. The only things I want to see from the CE are maybe the soundtrack and Making of DVD. The soundtrack I can extract directly from the game files. The official soundtrack will probably be on itunes if I ever want the unreleased tracks, but almost everything will be available in the game files. For the Making Of DVD, I know for sure someone will post it on Youtube eventually. The fact is I usually only look at the CE stuff once or twice after buying it. It's usually not worth it for me. I know it's different for other people though.

posted a message on XP rate
I think most people won't really do any rushing:

    • D3 1-60 is equal to D2 1-85. Less overall time is needed.
    • Players can respec a skill or two easily for a fee, much easier than rolling a new character from scratch. (also auto-added attributes means no mistakes there either)
    • No town portals for high levels to speed low levels through content. Low levels have to follow the high level and actually survive for it to work. So far it sounds like monsters will target the low level. It will probably be very tedious to get rushed.

It will be $60 guaranteed. Activision doesn't let big budget games go for any less. Bobby Kotick even said he wants to charge $100 for all new games. He just hasn't been able to convince retailers to go along with it.

Lots of other good games out right now. Also, you can actually take a break from games and do stuff in real life. There are other hobbies besides video games.

Nice to hear your guy's take on it. Hopefully, the lack of new stuff from Blizzard means they are hard at work getting D3 ready for beta.

posted a message on BlizzCon Ticket Prices
It's nothing compared to travel costs. A good concert costs the same, but that's just one night of fun. Blizzcon gives you two nights and two days. The only reason I haven't gone is the travel costs. If I just had to pay $175 I would definitely try to get tickets, but the other $1000 or whatever for travel is just too high. Also when I want to take a vacation I like to get away from the city and just relax. I'd be so excited at Blizzcon I wouldn't get any sleep. I would come back home more tired than when I left.

    Edit: Another thing...
On the other hand, the online pay per view thing is a complete rip off. Someone inevitably records everything and posts it on Youtube in high definition, all free to view. I could see maybe $10 for access, but with all the problems I don't see how someone would pay for that. Last Blizzcon the HD mode didn't even work for most people. People that paid money for HD had to watch low res because of the bugs. There were also lag issues, hiccups and timing issues.

They even hyped up this big SC2 showmatch between Boxer (former Brood War champion) and FruitDealer (then SC2 world champion), but it never got shown on the live stream due to some error. I only watched the free stuff, which was the opening ceremony, some of the WC3 tournament, WoW tournament, and the showmatch (which was never shown due to bugs).

All over the forums paid viewers were having the exact same issues as me. I was really glad I didn't spend any money on that and just watched everything on Youtube. That's another thing. You could only watch the videos on demand for that weekend. After that, they were removed so even people who paid couldn't watch if they were busy that weekend or something. Youtube on the other hand you can still view everything today with no problems. /end rant

Besides the CE, Blizzard also released the SC2 soundtracks on itunes (SC2 had two). We can probably expect the same for D3.

posted a message on New type of Follower - "Spirits"?
I feel like they would have to change the lore and story a lot to make the whole spirit thing make sense. Why are these spirits following your hero? How do they fit into the story? I think Blizzard would have to either add stuff or rewrite stuff to make them fit. At this point, I don't think they have enough time to do this before release. Maybe in an expansion though.

posted a message on Think we'll get any more people working for us?
I think it will just be the caravan for most parts of the game, but I think there will be certain parts where your caravan gets to a major city. There should be other NPCs in those cities you can talk to, but I'm not sure if they will have any exclusive services. Probably not just because Blizzard doesn't want players to have to travel far to access special services.

Well, we're still waiting on the announcement on the hirelings to be retracted.

(Puting = present progressive form of put. Putting = golf term.)

It's "putting" for both. "Puting" is not a word.

It's probably every 30 days like SC2, but maybe they will change it for D3. Otherwise, maybe you can get 3G/4G for your laptop. I'm not sure if those are fast enough for battle.net to work though, but they should be good enough for a one time login so you can keep playing offline.

Edit: For some reason I was thinking 3G/4G are satellite. Anyways, if you can afford one of those satellite laptop adaptors + service fees, it should work anywhere in the world (not constantly, but most times).
