Are they common characters to be relate to in novelty. Does it stand for certain icon in children books? Is it being preserved?

I thought they were another species in their genus. I can imagine some people would be afraid of them. I wouldn't but there are a lot of people who are afraid of mice, so I imagine there are a lot of people afraid to most animals.
