    Magic Find Analysis
cyeron has put together a full analysis on the effects of Magic Find in conjunction with the Goblin creatures. In his analysis, he tests various percentages of magic find with hundreds of runs for each sample. He tests item quality, number of items, and ilvls, all in relation to MF.

You can check out his original thread with all of his data and results here. There is a great deal of information to be found in this thread which leads to his conclusion: MF increases only the quality of the gear dropped, not the amounts or the iLvl

    Wizard Inferno Guide
tryhardenmity has created a full guide for Wizards. In the guide, you will find coverage on everything you will need to know to beat Inferno. He will explain the gear, skill and passive spec, and play style for the class including kiting and stutter stepping techniques. You can check out his original thread here.

Barbarian Act 3 Inferno Farming Guide
cakezlol has posted a guide for Barbarian players to farm in Act 3 in Inferno. Included in the guide are key stats for players to search for to help maximize benefits and minimize the cost of your gear. You can check out his thread for a full list of how to build your Barbarian.

    Enchantress Completes Inferno Act 1
When Followers were first announced, Blizzard had stated that they were primarily to be used for Normal game mode only and would be next-to-useless in any further difficulty. After an outcry from the players, Blizzard decided to change this decision. Not only are Followers useful in Inferno, with the right gear, they can do most of the work for you. froghandler has posted a video where his Enchantress takes on Act 1 of Inferno. You can check out his thread here.

    Natalya's Set Bonus Bug
With Patch 1.03, we reported that the 4-piece set bonus for Natalya's Wrath increased discipline regeneration by 2 per second. While this remains correct, for now, it turns out that this was actually a bug and never intended to be implemented. However, Blizzard is still not sure, yet, how to resolve the issue. They have stated that they are doing their best to not meddle with items unless necessary to preserve the integrity of trade. However, this was not an intended change so it most likely will be changed back.

We're a bit apprehensive because we really don't want to keep fiddling with people's items, even though this makes the set quite good. On the other end, it was an unintended change and so correcting it isn't quite the same as fiddling. In any case, it hasn't been discussed fully and so we don't know yet, and probably won't know exactly what we'll do until next week.

Bashiok, leave it as is and make other set bonuses just as "overpowered"
I'm not sure if buffing the rest of the game to keep from nerfing one set bonus is the right call, but it's certainly one to be considered

    Reminder: IAS Nerf in 1.0.3

Characters with IAS on their items will see a drop in their character sheet damage, as character sheet damage takes into account attack speed (among other factors).

This change should not be confused with the Legendary buffs coming in a future patch (not 1.0.3), and those buffs, as previously mentioned, will not be retroactive.

Hotfix Makes Co-Op Inferno More Viable
In case you missed it, there was a hotfix this week. Most importantly, monsters will no longer gain extra damage in co-op games. So, grouping up in Inferno may be a more viable option now. There were also some bug fixes that nerfed some farming areas. You can check out the rest of the bugs fixed here.

    Treasure Goblin Farming Breakdown
We reported earlier about a Treasure Goblin farming spot. Impala has broken down a farmer spot for Treasure Goblins. He has analyzed the odds of possibilities based on 250 runs of the area. From not finding anything to how many rares per hour you can expect. The spot has since been nerfed but with four players, it still works well for farming for rares.

    Complete Barbarian Inferno Guide
devlolz666 has posted a very full guide to playing a Barbarian in Inferno. While many can argue that Inferno is much harder for melee based characters, he has made it possible to not only complete but farm Inferno.

    • Templar Build

Wizard DPS Calculator
Loroese has shared a detailed spreadsheet that helps calculate DPS for a Wizard. You can also use the calculator to compare items side-by-side as well as calculate your EHP. It also includes both Energy Armor and Glass Canon options to see what your damage and EHP will be with either of the skills activated.

    Monk Solo Diablo Inferno Kill

Petrosha87 on YouTube has posted a video of him soloing Diablo on Inferno. One key aspect to his Monk build is that he has gotten his attacks speed up to 3.2 attacks per second. You can also check out full descriptions of his build and gear. The build he uses is not just for bosses either. He claims you can use this build to help kill elite packs as well as farm other bosses for some great gear.

He also posted a few comments to help users trying to follow his build:

The build is great as long as you have the gear to support it. I would suggest staying with Dodge mantra (with armor if you want to be defensive or backlash if you feel you don't need it) until you reach 650+ resist, 4,5k+ armour and 600~ life on hit with 30k+ hp. Thats when things start becoming more bearable for monks :)

    Act 1 Gear Farming Area

Lindail has also shared numerous areas within Act 1 to help you through your character leveling. Inferno or low level gear grinding is covered in a multitude of areas. You can check out the full list of his videos in his original thread.

This video is a quick spot for people just getting into Inferno. There is a random dungeon that can appear with an elite monster for a nice chance to drop some gear to help you gear up for the rest of the challenges ahead.

    Witch Doctor Damage Calculation Spreadsheet

DrZey posted an interesting WD Spreadsheet on our forums, it will let you calculate your damage and figure out how big of an upgrade items are before you buy everything off the AH!

We have a lot of very active users on the class forums and you should definitely check them out if you're wondering what to do next with your character:

lindail has shared with us a great spot to farm for experience, helping your character go from 1-50 in about 4 hours. The best part, you do not even have to kill anything yourself. A nice piece of environment does all the work for you.

Item Levels Correctly Displayed on Battle.net
With the change of item levels being displayed for items above lvl 60, the correct numbers are now being shown on Battle.net. This change will also occur in-game when patch 1.0.3 goes live. No longer do you have to wonder why a magic item may be better than a legendary if the magic item's ilvl is higher than the legendary item. You can check out the whole list of legendary items and their ilvl's over at the official Diablo 3 battle.net page.

Q & A with Bashiok on Popular Questions
Bashiok took the time to answer a lengthy list of questions compiled from multiple users. You can see some quick points below or read all 35 questions!
    • Updates are coming for the AH such as a "buy out" filter as well as being able to sell damaged items (which will be automatically repaired for the buyer). Other enhancements are being looked into like seeing sold item stats, detailed buy/sell info, and more filter options.
    • Nephalem Valor buff is being looked into with both a warning if you are about to do something to cancel the buff and a grace period for disconnects.
    • Pet/Follower AI may get improved to avoid them attacking invulnerable targets and focus on vulnerable targets first and attacking elites/treasure goblins who are far away.
    • There are many UI changes being looked at once more important issues are resolved.
    • Possibly adding a tutorial tip for elective mode once entering Nightmare.
    • Many improvements coming for friends list/quick join like expanded game lists with all players and difficulty.
    • Chat UI improvements are being looked in to such as private chat rooms.

Thanks for that. We really appreciate everyone helping to provide constructive feedback, and rest assured we're taking a lot of it with us to meetings, design decisions, and many will be seen in not-too-distant patches.

I'm going to do my best to answer/address/comment on each of these points, and approach each as plainly and honestly as possible, so please bear with me.

    1) As a player, I want to have some sort of warning and/or confirmation box when I'm about to do something that will cause me to lose Nephalem Valor stacks so that I don't accidentally move or change an ability and lose my stacks.
Sounds reasonable. We're adding in an action bar lock which should help with that, but a confirmation sounds like a possible addition to that. I think we'd like to try to see if the action bar lock works well enough first.

    2) As an Auction House user, I want a checkbox for "buyout only" so that I don't have to use a janky work-around.
Us too! This change should already be in for the 1.0.3 patch.

    3) As an advanced player, I want the option to show numerical cooldowns on my abilities so that I can better time them.
We're really trying hard to avoid quickly bloating the game options, and since this would be an option, we're cautiously approaching it and a few other toggle/option requests. Short answer, probably not right now.

    4) As a player, I want to be able to move and resize the chat window so that I can put it where I want it.
We would love if this was possible too, and we're right now looking into making it happen. The issue is that our UI system was designed in a way that makes this a pretty steep technical challenge. The question right now is just when we'd be able to pull it off. Unlikely for any nearby patches.

    5) As a player, I want to be able to increase or decrease the font size in the chat window so that I can make it better for my monitor/resolution.
This change is in for patch 1.0.3! Yay.

    6) As a player, I want to see absorption effects on my health bar so that I can easily see and act on my remaining absorption shield.
We really want to avoid showing health numbers or effects on the health resource spheres, it's just a UI clutter issue we're really trying to fight right now. A lot of easy solutions are to pile more UI on top of things, and it tends to really snowball once it begins. We could look at other tells or effects for this, though.

    7) As a Wizard, I want to see a buff icon for "Magic Weapon" and "Familiar" so that I can know its current status.
We're adding a buff icon for Magic Weapon in 1.0.3. We don't intend to add one for Familiar as it's a physically visible object on your screen. Magic Weapon was actually impossible to tell if it was up in quite a few cases. We'll be continuing to watch skills and buff icons, though, as there could be some situations where we need to expose more.

    8) As a player, I want some way to retain my stacks of Nephalem Valor when I accidentally disconnect so that I don't feel terrible if I disconnect with a 5-stack before a boss.
We would love that too. Seriously. We're already in the process of determining how much work it would be, and as always it's a balance of priorities. I think this is a matter of not if, but when, and right now we're not sure when we could get it in.

    9) As a player, I want a way to disable lore/story text from showing up in the chat frame so that I don't have to always scroll after an in-game conversation.
This is actually already an option in-game! :D Sound -> Show Quest Dialog In-Chat (is what I believe it's called)

    10) As a player, I want to have my previous follower always automatically follow me whenever I start a new single-player session so that I don't forget and have to go back.
Good idea. We'll look into it.

    11) As an Auction House user, I would like to be able to repair my items from the auction house so that I can sell them without going in the game.
We're just changing it so you can sell damaged items in the next patch.

I personally think buying an item on the AH that is damaged is a major annoyance.
Ah yes! Right so when you buy it, it's repaired for you.

    12) As a Blacksmith, I want to see what tier an item is before I salvage it so I can know what materials to expect.
It’s something we’ve talked about, but no concrete plans at this time. There are potentially better issues to focus on first for crafting in general.

    13) As a player, I want my pets/minions to not attack invulnerable targets and instead focus on vulnerable targets so that I can kill things faster.
Yes! We're looking into how to pull this off. It's a bit tricky just due to how monster states work, but it shouldn't be too difficult.

    14) As a player, I want the experience bar to hide once I hit the maximum level so that it doesn't take up unnecessary screen space.
Our UI really isn't modular, so it'd be a lot of work just to save those few pixels. There's probably more important fish to fry at the moment.

    15) As a player, I want to see what difficulty my friends are playing so that I can know if I'll be interested in joining them.
We have some great social window and quick join improvements coming in 1.0.3, including showing the game difficulty they're in, who else is in the game with them, a bunch of just nice usability and UI changes, as well as making the quick join window smarter by limiting who is shown to you by level and difficulty.

    16) As a new player, I want to be made aware of "elective mode" once I've become familiar with the game so that I can learn about and try more advanced builds.
It's already shown through the loading tips, but we're looking to also add it as a tutorial tip that will show up whenever you begin a new difficulty from Nightmare-on.

    17) As a player, I want it so that only my accepted friends can autojoin my game so that I don't get surprised by "recent players" that aren't my friends while playing.
Huh, well, yeah that sounds like a reasonable request. We'll look into it.

    18) As an advanced player, I want the option to show numerical values around my health and power orbs so that I can make better decisions.
(see answer for number 6) I understand there's a desire to see more numbers exposed, but again we're really fighting UI and option bloat from all angles. I think a lot of additions are inevitable, but the game just came out 3 weeks ago and we're looking at a product where we'll be adding and tweaking for years and years.

    19) As an Auction House user, I want to see a detailed view about all steps in the buying/selling process so that I can know exactly what the status on my purchase is (ex: "XXX Gold paid for YYY item, (newline)YYY item received, (newline), YYY item sent to stash")
    I'll pass that along.

    20) As a player, I want the game to automatically hit my next-best-potion type when I'm out of my current potion type so that I don't have to reassign it during a long fight.
Yeah, we think there could be some 'smarts' added to the potion button too. It's on a wish list, we don't know when it's something we could prioritize into an update.

    21) As an Auction House user, I would like tooltips for damaged items to still show the item stats when looking at them from the sell menu so that I don't have to log into the game to see them (maybe just put "damaged" somewhere on the tooltip?).
I believe this is resolved with the ability to sell damaged items in the next patch.

    22) As an Auction House user, I want to be able to have ascending/descending orders by stat in the Auction House UI so that I can better find an item I want.
We're looking at a number of AH UI improvements; there's still a ways to go. The biggest issue is really adding more options when we're already running into space constraints, but that's our problem, and we're working on it.

    23) As a player, I want a "build saver" so that I can easily change between builds rather than trying to remember them.
We think that'd be cool too, it's something we've been considering for a while. We don't have it nailed down to begin working on it yet, though.

    24) As a player, I want integration between the website's "build saver" and an in-game build saver so that I can screw around with builds while not logged in.
Hah! That'd be cool. Probably on an extended wish list. ;)

    25) As an advanced player, I want to be able to move, scale, or hide any UI element so that I can make the UI convey me information in a more customized fashion.
Our UI isn't modular, so this would be very difficult. We also don't intend for the UI to be customizable to the degree of... well certainly not World of Warcraft, but any options we add for UI customization would be along the lines of minor tweaks. I realize a lot of MMO's have very customizable UI's these days, and people really like that, but it's just not a focus of functionality for the game. We'd rather understand what improvements people would like, why, and try to tackle those specific issues.

    26) As a player, I would like some way to get Tomes of Jewelcrafting in Inferno that's not cumbersome so that I can combine my square gems without going back to Hell difficulty.
Ideally it's something you can help address through just throwing some gold at the auction house if you don't want to go back to Hell, but with commodities being down I realize that's not an option. Our preference would be to see if use of the AH helps you meet those needs by just buying what other players don't need. If not, we can look at some potential solutions.

    27) As a player, I want a "Detailed Breakdown" option that allows me to compare stats such as resistances, magic finding, etc. so that I can better analyze item choices.
We're planning to roll resistances into the defense comparison, and we'll be evaluating other comparisons case by case. We know people really like the convenience of quick +/- red/green comparisons, but they're not always as informative as they're taken to be. In any case we're approaching additions cautiously.

    28) As a player, I want a private chat UI element so that it will be easier for me to hold multiple private conversations at once.
Similar to question number 4 it's not something we're opposed to, but isn't easily pulled off due to how our UI works. We do want to improve the chat UI though, absolutely.

    29) As a player, I want to be able to have a private chat room so that me and my friends can chat even if we're in different Diablo sessions.
Customizable/private chat channels, yes, it's something that's been on our list.

    30) As an advanced Auction House user, I want a more complex query interface with "OR"/"AND" for stats so that I can better find an item I want to buy.
These are called boolean search terms, right? It's an interesting proposition. To parrot my previous AH-related responses, there's a lot of search improvements to be made.

    31) As an Auction House user, I want to be able to see the stats of items that I've sold so that I can refer to previous sales when determining prices for new sales.
I can see how that could be useful.

    32) As a ranged player, I want invulnerable minions to not block projectiles so that I can actually kill an invulnerable minion pack. (More of an opinionated one :-P)
Yeah, I mean, that's kind of just an issue of placement and projectile aim. We think Invulnerable enemies are a bit ridiculous right now anyway, but I wouldn't say this suggestion is probably needed if we just make some overall changes to them.

    We're well aware. ;)

    34) As a max level player, I want an option to skip all cutscenes/dialogue so that I don't have to constantly press the spacebar to advance in the current game flow.
If you hit Esc during any 'forced' conversations, cutscenes, etc. you can skip right through them. We think it works pretty well. I'd be open to hearing any specific issues it's causing, though.

    35) As a player, I do not want my followers to initiate combat with elite, rare, or treasure goblins so that I can have more time to prepare to fight them.
We have some AI tweaks to do with followers, we know this can get pretty annoying (or deadly).

PHEW! Well, again, thanks for compiling that, thanks to everyone for your continued feedback. There's a lot here we're already aware of, working on, or have already implemented in a patch, and I realize there are a fair amount of other concerns not covered here that are also being addressed. We'll have some additional information on upcoming patches and improvements in the weeks ahead. Keep cool.

Of course, the harder difficulties are supposed to be more challenging, but we don't think it's fun gameplay to cast Zombie Dogs, watch them die almost instantly, wait for the cooldown to reset, re-cast Zombie Dogs, watch them die almost instantly...etc. And this is happening even when players are wearing pretty reasonable gear.

We're looking into ways to improve witch doctor pet survivability at later levels, but we don't have any clear plans to share just yet. One thing we're considering, though, is having pets scale with your Vitality (which they currently do not do). (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    General Chat Opt-Out Remembered
We're looking to add functionality in a future patch that will "remember" if you've left General chat. It'll work similarly to World of Warcraft -- after you've left General chat once, you won't be automatically re-added to the channel whenever you next log in. It will essentially "opt you out" of the channel, but you'll still be able to re-join it manually.

    Error 37
We're aware that many players are receiving "Error 37" when logging into the game. This error indicates that the authentication service (the step that verifies your username and password, and checks to see that you've agreed to the Terms of Use) for Diablo III is experiencing is a high volume of traffic and cannot immediately process your login attempt. We're working to reduce the frequency at which players are prompted with this error message and ensure that everyone can log in and play as quickly as possible. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Does Blizzard Listen
First off: we’re absolutely listening. And in case you haven’t read our recent Game Design Update you should definitely check it out. It offers quite a lot of insight into some of the discussions we’ve been having behind the scenes, as well as our overall design goals and just a few of the game changes that we’re working on.

Everybody’s got an opinion. The things that one person most strongly dislikes are probably not the same things that are frustrating another equally passionate player, and perhaps neither concern are the topmost priorities for the developers to focus on at this particular moment.

If you have feedback, we’re definitely interested in hearing it, especially if you can give specific, constructive feedback on your concerns. But I think it’s important to remember that Diablo III has only been out for a little over two weeks, and so in many cases, we have been watching how things develop and planning how to best address particular concerns. I can assure you that we’re well aware of the major concerns, and have indeed touched upon most of them. We’re also going to be getting into the nitty-gritty of some specific changes we have coming up very soon, and then we’ll have the patch out before you know it.

Also, keep in mind that every alteration, even the smallest, most obscure one that you might not even notice, has to go through a huge number of hands and be thoroughly tested, evaluated, and reevaluated before they finally make it into your waiting hands. That process simply takes time.

In essence: simply because we haven’t addressed particular concerns here on the forums yet, that doesn’t mean they are not under close observation or that we don’t intend to address them. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Quick Fixes
There's a time and a place for fast-action, high-priority designations. And believe me, we do have those types of approval pipelines. I'd argue though that reacting in a rash manner does not, in most cases, make for great game design.

Game design really is an art form more than a mathematical equation, even with so much math involved. The end goal should be amazing gameplay. And how that's defined will differ from person to person.

Sure, we can be slow to act. Sometimes we can be too slow. But even with the mistakes we've made -- and the mistakes we're sure to make in the future -- I think we're better off taking a measured approach to potential design changes. :)

Thanks for being professional in all your responses. All of your team.
    <3
Thanks for bearing with us as we've tried to keep information flowing on these forums. They've been moving quite fast!

Of all the issues and questions being asked on the Forums why respond to this? I see the same half-dozen questions being asked by many users with no answers. Yet I see Blues responding to what is the best drink to have while playing and what their favorite in game moment was, bravo. :(
If you have any issues with what we do on the forums, send it to WoWCMFeedback@Blizzard.com. Don't follow us into threads and tell us where we should be posting. Thanks.

If you know you're slow to react and implement changes, can't you be a little more forthcoming with informing us of what you want to do?
We're always striving to improve our communication. The primary function of the community team is to listen to the players, so we've spent a lot of time these past few weeks compiling feedback and taking it to the developers.

The flip side of that coin is for us to relay information back to the community as best as we can and as often as possible.

Does your team simply hate talking with the public for fear of "breaking promises"?
No, but you're asking very specific questions about late-game class balance only a couple of weeks into Diablo III's life cycle. The overwhelming majority of the community isn't even there yet. We're watching things very closely and have a lot of tweaks in mind, many of which are already being worked out, but we're not looking to jump all over balance adjustments and catch players off-guard. And it's certainly not an MMO where balance is among the biggest concerns.

For those who have already invested a lot of time into this game I'm sure these last couple of weeks have felt like a lifetime. But with regard to this game's lifespan, we're barely in our infancy.

All of that said, we're already preparing another game design update to share with everyone soon. We hope that'll provide additional insight into our plans for the foreseeable future.

So because I'm in the 1.9% in Inferno, my opinion matters little?
Pathetically bad itemization and drop rate on suitable items in Inferno is a low priority?
Melee going squish in seconds on rares/elites in act2+ is on the back burner in favor of casuals in normal/nightmare/hell?

Conversations don't work when you put words in my mouth and then venomously question -- in a near rhetorical fashion -- how I could say such things.

I don't know if it's just because you're frustrated that you see red whenever you see blue. But you seriously need to relax.

Who does it serve when hundreds of players jump on any blue poster they see, tar and feathers at the ready?(Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Big Development Post Coming Monday
While responding, once again, to a question about the difficulty of Inferno, Bashiok mentioned that they are planning on releasing an article on Monday that will include some fun stats, and explain things they are currently working on with some time frames.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Plus the item economy at the higher levels is extremely limited just because the number of people able to progress is even smaller. People tend to underestimate gear value, or want difficulty progression to be a linear curve. Not everyone enjoys the steep difficulty incline and need to take a step back on improving their characters, builds, technique, etc. But it certainly is a case of overcoming difficulty through skills and gear as there are cases of all classes continuing to clear Inferno post-nerfs.

Anyway, we'll have an article up on the front page on Monday that gives a couple fun stats, and goes into explaining a few of the things we're working on and maybe some rough time frames.

I think we're about to see the busiest weekend for the game yet, with the most amount of people online and enjoying the game together. We're looking forward to a bright future for the game for years to come. We're in it for the long haul.

(Pro tip! See the blue BLIZZ icon to the right of this post? Clicking it will take you to any subsequent blue posts in the thread. Check it out!)

Do you think that one area of concern that may get looked at is that people aren't able to gear up for Infernon Act 1, even, without going to the AH and spending a lot of gold.
The auction house obviously provides an incredible service to allow for very easy trades between characters, and essentially blows out the wide range of items you could have available to you at any one time. So, in fact, the AH has to be a factor in how we drop items. On one hand you have a huge benefit because you can buy and sell items very easily, as opposed to having to post up WTS threads in the old USEast trading forums, but on the other end it does impact the item pool economy with the inherent ease at which you can trade items. If the AH existed but wasn't a factor at all into how items dropped/rolled, the economy would be completely tanked within a matter of weeks.

If it's so small it's odd how many people I've met that are actually in Inferno, myself included. You can't mean to say we're the 1%.
No, no, no... far, far less than 1%. :)

Would this include explaining the latest patch that toggled my firewall warning?
No... there was a tools update, which would likely need to be re-allowed by some firewall software as the executable has changed. Game design updates aren't going to include individual technical support questions, though. You should hit up the tech support forum.

Once again like i said early say that to the hard core players face!soft core had 30k people on ,hardcore had 300 .Out of those 300 guess how many are in hell farming?
    Very, very few. It's Hardcore!

I appreciate there are still a lot of questions, but the post on Monday has quite a bit of info and is coordinated to be posted in about a dozen languages. I really can't get into too many specifics without ruining the efforts that have gone into ensuring a simultaneous release. I do hope you find it informative, though.

    Have a good weekend!

    Info on Hacking
Blizzard helped share some information on why hacking occurs and how players can help prevent it.

The "hacking" ("compromising" is probably a better word, since no real "hacking" is going on) being seen in D3 is no different than what World of Warcraft players have been seeing for five years or so. The sad thing is, if no one bought game currency (gold, credits, whatever) from these third-party companies, then essentially no account compromises would be occurring. Compromises not done by gold selling companies are very rare indeed. They strip one player to sell to another, because it's much more efficient than "farming" gold. They still farm some of course, but they do it purely with compromised accounts.

Unfortunately, these compromisers make a lot of money off of the practice (because players buy gold) and so they have a lot of resources to use to try to get your password from you directly, or through your computer. Some of their poorly translated phishing e-mails may be laughable, but their trojans, infected websites, etc. are not funny at all.

If you have the physical or mobile authenticator (both of which major banks use and charge $30+ for) the chances of you being compromised are very, very small. I've personally examined the MSInfo files of nearly all of the handful of WoW players who have actually been compromised through an authenticator, and the sheer number of backdoor programs and other malware on their systems has been mind boggling. Probably not coincidentally, these same people were also running a disturbing number of file-sharing and download programs, including ones which are commonly known to not be safe.

Again, compromising game accounts is a big business in some countries. They have people on their payroll who spread false rumors of "hacked through my authenticator" just to try to discourage people from using them. We charge $6.50 for the physical authenticator, because that's exactly what it costs us to make them. The mobile one is free because we don't have to pay a factory to build them. Use them, and enjoy your gaming without someone mucking with your stuff.

The post on the main page said that NONE of the hacking victims had authenticators. Are you saying that there were hacked accounts with an authenticator?
Sorry for not being more specific on that. The hacks I was referring to were from the last five years of WoW compromises, not the current D3 compromises. None of the D3 compromises that we've checked have actually had authenticators, despite their claims.

I got hacked 2 days ago. How'd that happen, bliz?
I just checked your account, and it has never had either the physical or mobile authenticator attached to it. You did have the dial-in authenticator attached, but it's level of security is far below the physical and mobile. It's meant to be used in addition to the main authenticator, not in place of.

    Hmmmmm.

I'll bring up the idea of renaming the dial-in authenticator to my management. At the very least, maybe remove "authenticator" from its name so that people do not get it confused with the main authenticator (physical or mobile).

The authenticators my bank hands out are completely f.r.e.e.
That's definitely cool. You should commend your bank then as some of them charge waaaaaaay too much in my opinion.

What is the concrete cause of the hackings?
Well, the cause is people desiring a shortcut in their games by buying gold. If you mean the technical cause, as I mentioned previously the gold selling companies use a vast array of methods. A good friend of mine is a long time network admin (and a very good one at that), who had decided to not use an authenticator because he'd never had any security issues with his computer over the years. Well, an Adobe Flash vulnerability popped up a couple years ago, and he procrastinated applying the update by a whole week. As you can probably guess by the fact that I'm relating this anecdote, his WoW account was compromised and stripped because of that one week window.

There's absolutely nothing shameful about getting compromised, these companies are good at what they do. Heck, the former head of Blizzard Customer Service had his account compromised. It's because of how devious and high-tech the gold-selling companies have gotten that we implemented the physical and mobile authenticators. We can't physically go to everyone's computer and make it safe, so we've provided a tool that does it for you.

I've been a computer tech for a long time, and I've never had a single malicious security breach on any of my computers that I'm aware of, but I attached one of the very first batches of physical authenticators to my account. Why? Because no matter how good I am, sooner or later they were going to get me. But now, they can't.

Are you claiming that I did not have both the dial in auth and the SMS auth?
No, you had those. But neither of those are the physical or mobile authenticator, the main line of protection that is being referred to. The Dial-In and SMS are just nice additional layers of security to add to the physical or mobile.

It's becoming pretty apparent that our naming scheme might be causing some confusion, and I apologize for that. I'll bring the subject up with my management, so can we review both how the devices are named and how they are presented. If you have only one authenticator on your account, you want it to be the physical or mobile, not the dial-in or SMS.

You might want to reconsider implying that people with compromised accounts are buying gold with real money.
That's definitely not what I'm saying, and I apologize if it came across that way. I meant that gold selling companies exist and compromise accounts because some players buy gold. If there was no market, there would be no companies dedicated to the market. Most people who are compromised have never bought gold.

I asked the same question earlier, however with it being a holiday weekend, and so many account compromises occurring I wouldn't count on a quick turnaround.
We're a 365/7 support center, so thankfully the holiday weekend shouldn't add much of a delay.

What I don't know is if you can play a character while a restoration is occurring. May I have a response regarding the playability of the account during the process of character restoration?
You don't want to play your characters on the same realm (US, EU, ASIA) that will be rolled back, as the whole set gets rolled back at this time. However, to the best of my knowledge your characters on the other two realms are unaffected unless those realms needed to be rolled back as well.

So, let's say you've been playing on the US realms only and you were compromised. You definitely shouldn't touch the US characters until the process is complete on our end. However, since you've never played on the EU realm you should be completely safe in creating a character on that realm without the fear of it getting rolled back. The downside of course is that you can only play the EU character on the EU realm. Still, I wanted to point out the option. : )

    I THINK it's a java exploit
There definitely could be some Java exploits. That's the thing though, they use everything they can, and in tandem. I wasn't aware of even half of the keylogging methods that are in use until I started working this job. We've been monitoring WoW compromises for years now, and while a particularly nasty vulnerability (like the Adobe Flash one I mentioned earlier) might result in a surge of compromises, the truth is that there's never just "one thing" that's resulting in compromises. It's compromise by a thousand cuts, if you get my paraphrasing.

This is why we made the physical and mobile authenticators. After awhile, we realized that passwords weren't just being stolen because of bad computer habits or poorly thought out passwords (although that happens as well). They were being stolen because of the sheer quantity of methods that the gold-selling companies were flooding the Internet with. No matter how careful you are, they may still get your password eventually, and that's why we have the authenticator. It's why I have one on my account right now. We even priced the physical model at cost ($6.50) so that no one could rightfully claim that we were making any money off of them.

Bottom line: We hate seeing people compromised, and having to deal with compromises also costs us a lot of money in support costs. We need either everyone to use an authenticator (physical or mobile), or no one to buy gold. Should that day come, we won't have to worry about this anymore.

But I'm still a little confused, how come some players were initially told that their accounts hadn't been compromised when they obviously had been? Was there a problem with your customer service department?
I'm not completely sure, to be honest. One of our systems probably just needed to be tuned a little better.

Yes, you can. Simply go into the options menu then to account and change the language setting to German. You will receive a pop-up asking if you want to restart your game. Once you acknowledge that, the game will be restarted in German. You will need to wait just a little bit for the download of the German files to initialize and then a couple of minutes for the download to complete to the point that the game is playable. You can start playing before the whole download is complete as the streaming technology will finish getting the needed files while you play (depending on your internet connection you can start playing during the download or you can wait for it all to finish).

AH Timer During Server Down Time
I can't confirm 100% but I believe it does not pause. As for the real money auction house, as mentioned in the Diablo III Post-Launch Update forum thread, we want to ensure that the servers are as stable as possible before we launch this service. This means that ideally, other than for exceptional circumstances, any downtime will be announced in advance, so you will have the time to decide if you want to put up your item even with a scheduled downtime coming up. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    AH Market Prices
It is better to let the market decide what the price will be. It will start stabilizing after a few more weeks I assume. When everyone starts understanding the value of the items better. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Weekly Maintenance
We won't necessarily have one every week or even every other week. It is similar to StarCraft II when we want to do updates (which during the first few weeks to months we will most likely have rather regularly to make sure we address issues) we will schedule these to coincide with the weekly maintenance as much as possible. Posting Constructive Feedback
With the game only a week out, there are many players who want to voice their opinion. Now, if you would like to help add some constructive feedback, there is a right and wrong way if you would like Blizzard to take notice.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

You obviously decided to take some time to put together your thoughts and share them with us, which is appreciated. Second, I think you were almost successful in making it constructive.

I felt though, that this thread is a good opportunity to explain how you all can provide feedback in a way that helps more than simply criticizes.

    So, here's my advice:

First, please refrain from big overstatements such as titles that claim that the game is a failure or that you are sharing "facts". We see it often where flame wars occur because someone states something as innocuous as "We all feel x" or "this is fact" when it's actually just an opinion. It's better to make it clear that you're sharing your own personal opinion rather than speaking for others. You're more likely to get a more constructive discussion that way and get less hostility from other players who disagree.

Second, it's important to avoid overly emotional words such as "x is stupid", "y is completely broken", "z sucks so hard". It's not particularly constructive and may turn people off from what you're attempting to say.

Third, (and perhaps lastly) it's important to be very clear about what it is you dislike and why. It's equally important to explain what you like as well so that you're not throwing the baby out with the bathwater (so to speak). Clarity is key.

Saying Diablo II is better than Diablo III is OK to do if that's your opinion, but these conversations are pretty circular. Diablo III is not Diablo II. That said though, if there is something you enjoyed from Diablo II, it's perfectly OK to say what it is and why you enjoyed it. That's no guarantee that it makes sense for Diablo III, but it could be a potential consideration if the developers feel it makes sense.

In short, we understand that there are a lot of emotions and passion tied up in many posts we've been seeing. We are equally passionate on our end about the game. It's just important to reign in that passion and put it forward in a way that can be used toward potentially improving things that may need improved. We won't be able to please everyone as much as we try, but we are working hard to do our best to make as many gamers happy as possible.

That's not Neth's job. She's here to moderate.
Actually, I do more than moderate. ;) I'm not answering here because answers are being worked on and it may well be Bashiok who does the answering at that time. We all share responsibilities whether they're front and center or behind the scenes.

In this case, I felt that some direction would be helpful for further discussions whether they occur in this thread or in subsequent posts. I'd love to see everyone move on from overly passionate reactions to more constructive posting. It helps our team be able to distill feedback and pass it to the developers much better than having to work through the signal to noise ratio.

I'd also like to advise everyone to please watch using profanity. I dislike having to delete posts simply because there was inappropriate language in it. I also dislike having to moderate people for attacking others. Let's try to keep it civil.

do doubt you will see this or respond to it but how often do you see the game having updates?
Also will the 'patches' or "ninja updates" have notes somewhere with the changes? I always do like reading up on those, be it beneficial for my class (monk) or not. :-) keep up the good work!

To your first question- Unknown. Updates will be done as we feel they are needed. (Outside of our internal development schedule which we don't normally publicize.)

To your second question- We will provide updates as we can. We currently have a Hotfix blog that we'll update regularly as new hotfixes come in. For patches, you can normally find the notes in the launcher (when we do patches) and we also post on the blog as well. (When in doubt, check the blog on the front page or the sticky posts in the forums.)

When can we expect a reply directly answering everyone's opinions about the current state of the game without circling around the point?
We're working on something currently and will be putting it out in the ether soonish.

    Latency Indicator
The latency indicator in-game is not a simple ping like most games, and is actually a full process of the game sending an action to the service, the service processing it, and returning it to the client. This means that the latency indicator actually gives a more accurate account of what the experience is for game data, but in comparison to other games will seem high. We're more interested in issues where there is actual performance degradation, and certainly there may be, but the in-game latency number is not a simple ping and therefore shouldn't be used literally as a measurement against performance elsewhere.

I should add that the correct forum for this is really the Technical Support forum. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Australian 'Game' Pre-Orders
As we mentioned in our earlier post, Blizzard will assist players in Australia who preordered Diablo III® from GAME, but did not receive the product.

Players in this situation who have purchased a digital copy of Diablo III from www.diablo3.com as instructed can provide Blizzard with their preorder receipt from GAME, to receive credit from Blizzard.

If you’re one of these players, here’s what to do:

1.In accordance with the original post made on May 14, you must have purchased a digital copy of Diablo III from the Blizzard Store before 12:01 am on May 21, 2012.
2.Take a clear and legible photo (or scan) of your full GAME preorder receipt, and save it in JPEG format.
3.Log in to the Battle.net website using the account where you placed the digital order, and submit a new support ticket. Select “Battle.net” as your game or product.
4.Using the pre-defined topic list, indicate that you “need help with an order or purchase,” and that you “haven’t received a physical shipment.”
5.Proceed to ticket creation where you will have a text field and the option for an attachment.
6.For your ticket text, enter (or copy and paste): “ANZ-GAME Preorder credit request.”
7.Attach the photo or scan of the preorder receipt (in JPEG format), and submit the ticket.
8.You’ll receive confirmation that your ticket has been submitted, and our support staff will process these requests in the order they are received.

    Please note:

•In order to be eligible, the preorder receipt from GAME must be dated before May 15, 2012, and your digital copy of Diablo III from www.diablo3.com must be purchased before May 21, 2012. Late orders (those placed after these date) are not eligible for credit.
•Blizzard has obtained a list of the unfulfilled preorders from GAME, and we’ll be cross-referencing that list against any submitted receipts.
•The support ticket must be filed on the website no later than June 30, 2012, using the Battle.net account that ordered the digital copy of Diablo III.
•Credit will be applied as a refund to the payment method used to purchase the digital version of Diablo III from the Blizzard Store, matching the amount of the preorder, up to a maximum of the amount paid for the digital purchase at www.diablo3.com.
•Anyone who prepaid the full Collector’s Edition price will have the Collector’s Edition in-game items applied to their Diablo III license.
•We are unable to process credits for amounts greater than the digital purchase price. Therefore, for any preorder payments exceeding the digital Diablo III purchase price (such as those for Collector’s Editions), Blizzard will credit the amount charged for the digital version of Diablo III to the payment method used to purchase the game from the Blizzard store and then credit the remainder to the associated Battle.net account in the form of Battle.net Balance. To learn more about how Battle.net Balance works, please go here.
•You can track the status of your ticket using the Battle.net Ticket Status page. You’ll also receive email notification when the ticket is updated. Our support team cannot process or expedite these requests over the phone.

    Thorns Affix
While there has been a lot of concern about the validity of other affixes on items other than the few that most players have been stacking, a player recently stacked some Thorns gear to see how useful it could be.

    Usefulness of Gems
Bashiok explains how gems are used to help augment the gear you get by adding some of the more sought after affixes on top of the affixes on your gear.

So even if you reach the upper limit of a specific stat on an item, with a socket you can overcome that limitation. Want to really stack VIT? Even if you're hitting an upper limit of just straight affixes rolling on an item, you can add more VIT if the item has sockets.

Oh... and regardless of how many sockets you have, it only counts as a single affix. If an item rolls up 2 or 3 sockets, that still only accounts for a single affix spot on the item. An item rolling up sockets can absolutely be better than affixes.

How does it treat all three sockets as one affix if there are two different gems in it?

You are! :) So items will have an affix limit. Like "a rare of this level can only roll up 4 affixes max". Gem sockets, regardless of how many, only account for one of those 4 affixes. (in this hypothetical situation in which this particular rare is limited to 4) So this item rolls up +MF, and they're boots so +movement speed, and +Int and then also rolls two gem sockets. So that's the 4 affix limit.

I've found rings and amulets with no stats, the only "stat" that rolled on it was socketed
Yup. Not every item will be great. Some will be downright awful. The better to craft with. Better kill more demons. :)

If gets werent in the game, it wouldnt even matter, all they do is add +stats which is directly related to gear, and gear can have like +200 of that stat
I guess I'll just repeat myself. Gems allow you stack that stat potentially 58-178 higher than would otherwise be possible.

They'll be able to just recycle and swap them with the gear they have. Are there any plans to make "gem sinks" or is the cost to remove Radiant gems greater than I realize?
The cost is great, but ... it's still possible it'll happen a long enough time from now. We're not too concerned with coming up with a solution just yet. We want the system out there, see how quickly people are acquiring gems, and then see what (if anything) we need to do to provide some fun solutions.

If it comes to that I guess Blizzard can just add "gem dust" (salvaged from Gems, obviously) to crafting recipes, thus providing a Gem sink.
We actually had that at one point, but higher end gems are so difficult to create it felt pretty punishing to make that decision. "You worked for months making that gem, now destroy it!" But maybe it'll make more sense later when gems are a bit more common.

How are sockets useful ... if you can roll in a single stat affix, more stat than all 3 gems combined ?

I'm not sure if it is, I'd have to find out the max stats, but again, that's discounting the point of customizing your stats as well as stacking.

Say you got the +180 Int, if you have sockets you can raise that to 300+ which is not otherwise possible with just affixes.

    Gear Balancing with Legendaries
Everyone wants those legendary items but just how good are they? Bashiok helps clarify the intended purpose and balance of Legendary items.

Legendary items are commonly not going to be the best items. It's a title that denotes a named item, with set stats, and a unique model. It does not mean they're the best items.

Completely random rares will be the best items in the game if they roll up the right stats.

the fact that legendary stats are about as random as rare stats is a big turn-off to me.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Having some randomization even on Legendaries allows for non-optimal affixes, which in turn allows for "perfect" Legendaries. That spread means that finding a Legendary doesn't mean it's the best it can ever be. That's what makes the item hunt exciting. Items with predetermined stats is not what this game is about.

Legendaries aren't better than average blues.
I hope you're not just looking an item's DPS as to whether it's better or not.

It was fun to find a great legendary in D2. It is no fun to find rares. It isn't hard to understand, legendaries should be much, much better then they are, and there should be more of them.
I will take that feedback. Thank you.

As to the "more of them", Diablo III at launch has more Legendaries than Diablo II had at launch. I'm sure we'll add more as time goes on, but I do not agree that we don't already have a lot.

If most of the time you finally catch a carrot and it's rotten, eventually you just stop giving chase.
If you'd like to give any specifics I'd be happy to write them down.

Blues are the best items in the game unless a legendary is top to bottom perfectly rolled then i get a slight upgrade. There are about 4-5 modifiers in the ENTIRE game that are useful.
While you're attempting to gear up and progress I have no doubt that you're correct. Stacking specific stats early on will have greater benefit in helping you get over the difficulty jump.

I can clear all of Hell by myself, easily, where as it takes 3-4x longer to kill most monsters when you're in a group of four players
My guess would be that you're geared ok and doing decent damage, and the rest of your party is not.

    Hell Mode Too Hard
Go back to the end of Nightmare and farm items for a bit. You'll be surprised what some upgrades can help you do. It's not always going to be a linear progression. You will need to look around or craft some better gear to continue progressing. Also, of course, try out some new builds! You might find something that works a bit better.

Nobody wants to farm the 2nd difficulty, nobody. That shouldnt even be an option.
It's... the game. It's not just an option, it's the entire game. The entire game is killing demons over and over for small chances at item upgrades to make your character stronger. If you're not strong enough, guess what you should do? (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Interview With Nate Kenyon, Author of "The Order"

    DiabloFans Quote:

DiabloFans: First Nate, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to talk to us. I really enjoyed the book and I am excited to dive into some questions.

Nate Kenyon: Glad to be here. Thanks for having me on. And I'm really happy that you liked the book.

DiabloFans: "The Order" focuses on an event with Deckard Cain and leads up to Diablo III. Can you tell us a little more on what the book is about?

Nate: It takes place a few years after D2 and leads up to D3. Its a while after the battle at the mountain [Arreat]. Most of the people that were in that believe that the danger is over and they returned to their families. Deckard has not. He has continued to wander Sanctuary. He's become obsessed with a growing number of signs that indicate that there is going to be a new invasion coming form the burning Hells that's going to dwarf everything else that has come before it. He is determined to follow those signs and anything that might help him stop this demon uprising. As well, to find out if there are any Horadrim left or if he is the last remaining Horadrim.

He is a haunted man, we can get into that a little more later. His history and past, things he has kept buried forever, are going to come back to the surface in this book. Rear their ugly heads so to speak. So he travels Sanctuary and eventually ends up with Leah and rescues here. They go on the road together to try to find the Horadrim, if there are any left and stop the uprising of a man known as the Dark One, the evil villain in this novel. That's the plot in the nutshell.

DiabloFans: What efforts were made to help bridge gap with old players and bring in the new players?

Nate: This was a really conscious attempt to reboot the franchise. Coming into this, that was one of Blizzard's main goals. They wanted to refresh the novel, give it a different style, a different voice. Use this book to educate new fans and to give hardcore Diablo fans a new perspective on the lore. That was a real big focus and a concern of mine because I was a little worried it would bog down the plot. I really wanted to make sure the plot is exciting and we wanted to make sure that followed through and is the main thrust of the narrative. So I did this by using a lot of memories, flashbacks, dream sequences in different pieces that inform the major events of D1 and D2 as they relate to the novel.

DiabloFans: How much did you work with Blizzard in creating the novel?

Nate: Blizzard is very involved, as you would probably guess. They're an incredible team. They're creative, driven. They are demanding in a good way. They come to me with a story idea, it's relatively brief. In this case, it was definitely a significant story they developed that they wanted to riff off of along with the other stated goals like rebooting, re-educating the fans, that sort of stuff.

I took a look at that and thought it was interesting so we had some conference calls where we begin to brainstorm, hash out some details. I give some of my thoughts on it. Some things that concern me, interest me, excite me. Those are really some exciting times. It's collaborative, fun. These guys are great. I love working with them.

After that, with both the novels I have written for them, I finished the conference calls, take some time, digest some of it and work on a very detailed outline after several months of research; really digging into all of the Diablo lore. Once that outline is done, I pass that along to them and they fly me out there. We have a day or two long brainstorming session at the Blizzard headquarters. That's just amazing. An all day affair of energy, creative juices flowing, people throwing ideas back and forth. What they like and what they don't like. Through that, we hash out a revision of the outline and I give them a new version that satisfies everybody. Then I am off and running and writing the book.

During the course of the writing, it's pretty solitary for me. But I will bounce things off of Blizzard, their lore team, the people in the creative team to make sure things are working. After that, we go through some re-writes and get to the point where we are all really happy with it.

DiabloFans: Going off of that, are there any examples that you can think where you came up with an idea and they didn't like or one that they had not originally planned but liked your idea and wanted to add it in?

Nate: Yeah. There are lots of those. The story that they give to me, there is definitely a compelling kernel there but there is not a ton of detail or back story developed usually. That's the stuff that I work on and we work on together. We can talk about Cain's story a bit more but I don't want to spoil too much. But I think that one of my biggest interest in writing this was to develop Deckard Cain. Develop his back story, history, what drives him, what he is haunted by. To me, that is one of the most important things, of any novel, that you care about the characters. That they are important to you, that you identify with them, that you understand who they are and why they do what they do.

As important as Deckard Cain is to the Diablo IP, his story has never been told. He is a bit of a mystery in a lot of ways. I wanted to change that. I wanted to make him human, make him real. I wanted to give him drama and things he had to deal with. That was something that I suggested. And some significant plot points around his life I suggested doing which kind of change the whole thrust of the novel, which they loved. And there are many examples like that.

Adding the Monk is a character that was not originally in the idea. I don't think it was even in the final outline. It was something that came up early in my writing, where I felt like that I really needed something. I wanted to bring in something from Diablo 3. There was a lot of stuff in the book form D1 and D2; characters that you all recognize, certainly parts of Sanctuary, Deckard Cain's history, D1 and D2 history. I wanted to bring in a character from D3, a new character. Kind of define a class and it was helpful for the story. Things like that that worked out.

There are lots of ideas that don't work out but it's usually because Blizzard wants to do something different. They have reasons for it. They might say 'hey that's a really cool idea but it won't work because we want to do X, Y, Z in an upcoming game, or book, or whatever.' So its just doesn't work. That happens all of the time.

DiabloFans: Well, that actually answers my next question. I was going to ask you about the depth added to Decakard Cain and how much of that was your idea. I thought you did a great job of adding depth to Deckard Cain. I felt like I could connect with him as a character a lot more than I could from previously playing the games.

Nate: That's great news. That's great to hear. I think that is one of the most important things I could have done. I think he's fascinating. I love his character, the drama in it. It's funny because he has been such an iconic character, people know him and he's been, obviously, so important. But he's always been the 'wise old man' on the side; a secondary character. This book is his book. We almost called it "Deckard Cain" as a title. It's really his story. It gives him the chance to take center stage for the first time and that was really interesting for me.

DiabloFans: There is a lot of lore for the Diablo franchise. There are the games and other books. What kind of research did you do to write this book?

Nate: I did everything I could. One of the things that is just essential for me, I respect the fans so much. There are so many of them and they love the IP so much. They have been waiting a long time for this game and associated content. So, one thing I wanted to do was not let the fans down. That was really important for me. I wanted to get it right.

I spent a long time. This book was probably at least a year of my life. Months, early on, were spent just reading everything; all of the books, the Blizzard internal docs, the information they gave me about D3, the wikis, talking to fans. What ever I could to get familiar with it. I had played the games myself when i was younger. I had some familiarity but nothing at the level I wanted to get to. So, that was a really long and fun process for me. I didn't want to start writing until I felt it was kind of my own universe in a way. You get so familiar with it that you feel comfortable writing in it.

DiabloFans: I will say as a Diablo fan, I thought you did a great job. Reading it, I felt like I was reading an actual Diablo book as oppose to some other fantasy book.

Nate: That's great. That's good to hear. That's what I wanted.

DiabloFan: Along with that, Diablo is known for having a dark tone to it. Your previous works have these same tone. With your experience, was there any time where you wrote something and thought maybe it was too dark or did you let yourself run wild?

Nate: One of the reasons Blizzard and I thought I was a good fit for this book was because Blizzard really wanted to take it in a new direction. They wanted it darker, grittier, more horrific than previous things that had been done. They see the franchise as a horror franchise, there are many elements to it. They really wanted to play that up. I remember many times talking to them and they were like 'let loose. As dark as you want.' So, I didn't hold back.

I wrote it in some ways like I would write some of my original novels. I didn't try to change my style a lot and I think they wanted that too. They wanted a little more contemporary, grittier fresh tone to it. It all worked really well. The process worked really well. The story was definitely right down the right alley for me. And some of the things that I contributed to the story were some of the darker elements. Particularly, a creepy new monster, for example, in this book that has never been seen before. There is stuff like that that is definitely part of my background.

DiabloFans: Deckard Cain and Leah are two of the main characters in the book. Along with them, you added a Monk. How or why did you chose this class over the other new classes?

Nate: We talked about that a little earlier. Basically, it was a fairly late edition. I felt that I was beginning to write the book that we needed someone else as a main heroic character that could travel with them. I wanted to bring a new character class in. This book is really an attempt to bridge the three games. To bring everything into one place. To give fans background and information that will inform D3. So, it seemed like a perfect fit for me.

I wanted someone to contrast Deckard Cain. Let's face it, Cain as a epic hero is a pretty unusual choice. That has its own complications in writing it. To have a young, muscle-bound, physically gifted Monk along side him and a little girl on the road was really interesting. That was one reason, of mainy, that I decided to include the Monk. Thankfully, Blizzard said 'go for it.'

DiabloFans: For the antagonists of the story, there are some well-known antagonists that people will know but there are also some new ones to the franchise such as the Dark One. Was this something you came up with or something that Blizzard wanted added in?

Nate: The Dark One was part of the original story arc. So, it was a matter of fleshing him out. Coming up with his back story, why he is who he is. I think it is just as important for villains to be complex, well-rounded, to have histories, to have reasons for why they are who they are. I want readers to read my villains and be 'Oh, o.k. I get why they got to this point. Maybe it would not have been me but I understand it.' That was important to develop that part.

I won't spoil it by telling about the demonic influence in this book. That is certainly there. That was a central thrust to the story from the beginning for various reasons. But it was fun to develop that and the odd relationship between the two of them.

One of the things I really loved setting this up was the parallel. The Dark One, to me, is almost Deckard Cain's alter ego, a parallel universe in a way. I wanted to do that intentionally. Cain is not perfect by any means. He has dark parts to his past that readers will see when they read the book. I wanted the Dark One to be someone Cain could almost see himself as 'that could have been me', or at least an echo of him. The Dark One is also an inspiring scholar. He wants to be a great person, a leader but doesn't have the character for it for various reasons and chooses a different path. Hopefully that works. There's a parallel there, a setting of the book to make that work throughout.

DiabloFans: Is there any part of your story, characters or lore wise, that made it into the game? A specific example I thought of while reading the book is that through some events, Leah obtains a bow and in the early part of Diablo 3, we see her using a bow.

Nate: That's a great question, very perceptive of you to pick up on the bow thing. It actually went the other direction on that one. In the course of me writing this, I was trying to flesh out Leah's character and come up with details of her life. I think it was somebody on the creative team who said 'hey, you know what would be cool? Show the origins of her interest and skill with a bow and arrow.' I took that thought and built what ultimately resulted in the book, in the scene where she begins to acquire that skill.

The game was pretty largely developed when I came on board to write this thing. But Blizzard, as a company, they all work close together, share ideas, and cross-reference things. They are kind of working back and forth and I had a meeting or two with their game development people too to talk about some of this stuff. I don't know if there was anything that worked itself in the game from the book or anything I directly did. Most of the stuff worked in the other direction, came from the game to influence my novel.

What I did do was to develop some of the back story to things you'll see in the game and experience in the game. Things that were not explained in the game but gave me the opportunity to explain them in the novel. Those are things that I am really excited and thrilled to have contributed. Something that they may have not just fleshed out to that extent, that I was able to flesh out.

DiabloFans: As you mentioned, you created a specific demon, I won't spoil anything for the readers. I thought they were very interesting and would make great fodder for Diablo 3. I was hoping to bash some of them in the game.

Nate: (Hahaha) I don't know... I probably shouldn't talk about anything about the game. I do think that would be really cool. I thought they were cool creepy creatures. I would love to bash some myself.

DiabloFans: There are some well-known spells and items in the book from the games. Is it hard writing something like that in a literary way for a game franchise?

Nate: It can be. Blizzard is really conscious about that in a good way. They have told me, both when I wrote StarCraft and Diablo, they intentionally don't want writers to recreate a game experience in a novel. I agree with them. That is a really tricky thing to do. But at the same time, you want readers and die hard Diablo fans to recognize the universe and see these things in action.

There are some things that appear in this book that you are familiar with and readers will be familiar with that are really iconic items and pieces of lore. I hopefully handled in a good way within the narrative. They are not stuck in there. They are there for a reason. They are only in their if they made sense for the plot and the book itself. That was the way I tried to handle it. I didn't want to do anything literally too game-y but, at the same time, I wanted to work them into the plot that would make readers interested and satisfied by it.

DiabloFans: Again, not to spoil anything for the readers, but there is a particular item in the book that I enjoyed reading a literary explanation of how it worked.

Nate: I think I know what you are talking about. That was really fun. That came up at the very end of our brainstorming session when I flew out there to meet everybody. We were at a coffee shop, sitting there late in the evening and we were like 'You know what would be really cool? If we could work this in.' I was like 'I am going to find a way to do it.' Actually writing it out, working it out, I didn't even need to try to work it in. It was actually perfect, 'we have to do that right here.'

DiabloFans: Last question. Do you have any plans on working with Blizzard again with any future projects?

Nate: I love my experience with Blizzard. I really enjoyed both books I have done so far. I know that both Blizzard and I have talked about working together again. I know that they would love to do it and I would love to do it. It just a matter of trying to work things out at this point. But I am pretty sure we will find a good project to do together.

DiabloFans: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us.

Nate: Thanks for having me and I was glad to talk to you.

    Book Review of "The Order"

    DiabloFans Quote:

Blizzard was kind enough to give us an advanced copy of "The Order". Being a huge fan of everything Diablo, especially the lore, I could not wait to read every page. Add to that the May 15 release date, so you know that there are a couple of spoilers hidden within its pages, putting the book down was an impossibility.

    Summary
The book begins with a energetic 11 year old boy, Deckard Cain. Despite his mother's warnings, Deckard refuses to believe his fate. That is, of course, until his fate catches up with him. Now years after the destruction of the Worldstone, Deckard does not believe that the worst is over. While almost everyone has moved on to a normal life, Deckard remains ever cautious of an impending doom. Traveling Sanctuary looking for any and every clue of what's to happen, Deckard's journey leads him on a path to save the world; a burden he puts solely upon himself.

Along his travels, Deckard meets up with an old friend but he is discomforted by the state he finds her in. Without want, Deckard becomes the guardian of a young female. Leah, 8 years old, is thrust upon the journey that Deckard has started. While "bad things" have always surrounded Leah's life, she is completely unprepared for the events she is about to encounter.

While making their way, Deckard and Leah happen upon a spirited Monk, a Monk whose destined to protect the scholar on his journey. While preparing himself for this battle, the Monk has gone against his orders to leave the monastery in order to fulfill he prophecy. Armed with his mind and his body, the Monk has found himself paired up with Deckard and Leah on an attempt to stop the evil flowing into their world.

On Deckard's quest to find other members of the Horadrim order, they find out about a man that proves to be anything but what they had expected. The Dark One has begun to spread his evil amongst the citizens of Sanctuary. While his ultimate goal is still unknown, Deckard and his partners travel to the depths of darkness to stop the Dark One from completing his goal.

    Review
"The Order" is posed to not only fill in some of the gap missing between Diablo II and Diablo III, but it is also used to help new fans catch up with the events that have lead up to Diablo III. This is perhaps one of my favorite parts of the book. While other Diablo books have related to the lore of Diablo, none feel more like the game of Diablo then "The Order". With each reference to the first two games, I am reinvigorated by the story. Reading the memories of Cain while locked in a cage, hung above the burning town of Tristram brought me back twelve years ago when I first encountered this same event. Every memory, vision, and thought of Deckard Cain is riddled with the past as we hear even more of the actions that lead to the events that we have already played through.

Another great thing that author Nate Kenyon has done is turn a great video game into a great novel. Many efforts were made to help the reader relate to the player in all of us. Tons of iconic moves, events, and items appear within the novel. From the Monk's agile spirited moves to Leah's bow in Diablo III, players will feel right at home reading this tale. I will say, that out of all of the Diablo books, this is the first one to feel like the game as oppose to just a story existing within the IP. Don't get me wrong. The novel is just that, a novel. You won't be reading any game mechanics or anything of the sort. Instead, expect a great telling of these skills and items. There is one item in particular that especially excited me when reading the book but I'll let you discover that on your own.

Staying true Diablo, once more, the book is as dark as the Diablo we all remember. At some points, I remember getting the chills that you get from a scary movie, or the first time the Butcher ran after you. The Dark One is a true villain who does things that would make your skin crawl. Nate Kenyon has also added a demon, among the slue that you are already familiar with, that will make you want to bash their skulls in with an epic Barbarian bash. Hanging bodies, sacrifices, and shadows of all forms litter the pages to give the book the same dark feel that we all know and love from Diablo.

The best thing to come from the novel is the character Deckard Cain. While we all know our identifying friend, you won't truly know this elderly scholar until you read the book. Nate Kenyon has done a great job of adding true depth to the character we have grown familiar with. The only real information we ever had on Deckard's past was that he was the last of the Horadrim. Not much else was known of the iconic figure. That is all about to change. In "The Order" we find out about the true events that have cause Deckard to become the man he is, for better or worse. You will find yourself caring more for Deckard Cain than you ever have before.

Without spoiling anything, as much as I would love to, "The Order" is a must read for every Diablo fan. If you are an older fan, like myself, you will love hearing the re-telling of the games we have already beaten a hundred times. Our beloved Deckard Cain becomes a real character as we find out about his past. If you are new to the franchise, the novel is a great way to get caught up on the events you might have missed out on. While the book is not a must to understand Diablo III, it will add more depth to the older stories as well as fill in some of the gaps from Diablo III. Do yourself a favor and read this book. After all, everyone will have to take a break eventually from Diablo III and what better way to fill it than with more Diablo.

    No Artisan Can Add Sockets
While the Official page for the Jeweler says that the Jeweler can add sockets, this was actually something removed from the game. There is no way to add sockets to items if they do not drop with the them.

Socketing was a feature that was in the game very early on, but ultimately it didn't end up enhancing the play experience as we had hoped. Instead it just kind of felt like a chore. It's a really good feeling to see an upgrade drop, equip it, and keep moving on. When adding sockets to items was inserted into that equation, it made it feel mandatory to return to town every time an upgrade dropped to pull the gem from your current item, add a socket to the new one, and carry your gem forward. There's already a little bit of this in Diablo III with gems, but the fact that you can make a choice in most situations on whether or not to use a socketed item makes a big difference. As another consequence, the ability to add sockets made the random rolling of a socket as an item affix feel kind of crappy. And given the way items and stats are generated in this game anyway–you’ll virtually never get the same item with the same stats twice–we don’t currently feel there’s a major lack of customization depth.

Adding complexity to systems isn't a problem for us, but it has to enhance the gameplay, not add to it an element of tedium just for the sake of intricacy. Ultimately this is why adding sockets was pulled. Now, if we feel down the road that the item game needs some new flair, we'll absolutely consider additional customization features (such as enchanting or socketing). But we have to make sure they're designed in such a way that the game is enriched through the added complexity, without creating a convoluted item system that detracts from the initial excitement you feel when you get an epic new weapon or piece of gear.

    Blizzard Still Working Hard
Keep in mind not everyone who's critical is a hater. There are many people out there making great points, whether their feedback about the game is positive or negative. Whenever reading posts on the forums I try, first and foremost, to determine if it's clear that the poster genuinely cares about this game and wants to be invested in it, even if it's because they want to see improvements in specific areas.

This is a really important time for the company, as well as my team specifically. The game is out and in many peoples' hands. Now we're just listening carefully to what you think (and spending the hours meant for sleeping blowing up bad guys) -- while also doing our best to keep an open line of communication with you about common points of confusion, service issues, etc.

It all boils down to a love for gaming and passion for a franchise. That's a pot where players maybe the meat, and Blizzard employees maybe the peas and carrots, but it's all just one collective stew. I'm hungry.

Have a great weekend. <3 (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Barbarian
    Wayfarer – by Cameron Dayton

It was a man. A giant of a man who towered over even these hulking things. A man who stood dripping in hot blood that steamed in the cold morning air. He wore a bearskin cloak across mountainous shoulders, and his legs were girded with piecemeal armor of mismatched plate and mail. Heavy oxhide boots. Chest bare and scarred. Thick hands, knotted and rough, were wound around the haft of a terrible weapon that matched his size. It was easily three times the length of Aron's axe, forged of angry black metal and notched along both sides of its uneven blade. It was a coarse and brutal tool of death, held aloft as though it were part of the man's own arm.
This could only be a barbarian.

    Demon Hunter
Hatred and Discipline – by Micky Neilson

There was a barely discernible, persistent hum. The only signs of life came from Josen and two other hunters, one searching the derelict structures, another standing near a rundown storehouse. Whatever had happened here, they were too late to do anything about it. Now it was a matter of looking for survivors. That was, after all, the second most important thing her people did: feed and shelter those left homeless in the aftermath of unthinkable catastrophe. Guide them, encourage them, heal them, educate and train them... to do the most important thing, should they so choose: become a demon hunter and annihilate the hellspawn responsible for evils like this.

    Monk
    Unyielding – by Matt Burns

"The Patriarchs ask a hard task of you, one reserved only for the most devout of our order," the Unyielding had continued. He stared at Zhota for a moment, furrowing his brow. "You have attained the rank of monk, but there are times when I wonder if you are truly ready. There are times when I think you are still that fool boy who first came to the monastery. More beast than man, really... a wild thing with eyes clouded by emotion and intuition and all those other fleeting feelings that change on a whim just as swiftly as the winds. Are you that boy, or are you a monk?"

    Witch Doctor
    Doubtwalker - by Matt Burns

Each season, after the Igani, the emptied husks of tributes were carefully sewn together in the shapes of dogs, their bodies filled with herbal composts and dried leaves. A boiled skull of a beast was used as the head, attached just above a mane of feathers. With the blessing of the spirits, these zombified beings served as loyal minions at a witch doctor's beck and call.

    Wizard
    Firefly - by Michael Chu

That was our first meeting, and I still remember it vividly. Isendra embraced her role in teaching Li-Ming. She became a mentor to the girl, and Li-Ming gained a deep respect for the sorceress. They were more alike than Isendra or I had suspected. But Li-Ming quickly exhausted the extent of Isendra's knowledge. Their relationship changed, and Li-Ming began to treat the sorceress as an equal rather than a teacher. Isendra was changing too, and that worried me as well. She was far too permissive with Li-Ming's behavior. With nothing to learn, Li-Ming followed the vein of curiosity that had always driven her, and that was when the trouble started.

    Jay Wilson on Inferno
A new interview with Jay Wilson has just been posted. This time its all about inferno!

    Enrage Timers
Bashiok has given some more information on how enrage timers are going to work to help add just one more layer of difficulty in Inferno.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

So, as an imaginary example, in Inferno if you don't kill the Skeleton King within four minutes he starts spawning three times the amount of skeletons. That creates a much tougher situation, but it's one you could very well handle if played right.

People kiting the Skeleton King around for an hour with their level 3 characters is fun to see. It's not fun when it's level 60's at end game and item drops matter. To make these kills and thus a character's progression matter we need to try to fight cheesy tactics that allow people to just flop through the game.

Don't force people to be efficient if they don't want to be.
The point of the game is efficiency... Killing monsters as quickly as possible to maximize your time to find the drops you want. That is the game. I think you should do whatever you think is fun, absolutely, but if you want to go at a slower pace, not really worry much about maximizing efficiency, and just kind of take it at your own speed you're going to have a pretty rough time in Nightmare let alone Inferno. Hopefully as the game progresses and difficulty ramps up you're naturally being encouraged to tighten up your build and scrutinize your gear more and more.

In any case though, as I detailed the enrage timers aren't "I Win" buttons for the bosses, so a more defensive build should still be able to progress if they're geared and being played well.

With the Nephalem Valor buff the best loot is off champions, rares, and (assuming the buff is up) bosses. As I said the point is ensuring "legitimate" progression. But if someone wants to farm rares and champions in the beginning of Act I because they can't beat the Skeleton King, they should absolutely do that. And actually, everyone should be expecting to do exactly that when they reach Inferno.

You can very often achieve the same goal without the metagamey "I Win" button.
    They aren't "I Win" buttons.

what exactly does the enrage timer hope to accomplish other than becoming an artificial barrier of progress?
Nope! You nailed it, that's the intent of an enrage timer.

I like how you throw in "artificial" as a negative. It's a video game. It's all designed and artificial. If there's a "natural" or "organic" way to stymie someone's attempt to cheese their way through a boss kill I'd be happy to hear it.

Gotta farm up that tier gear before you progress! Hello boring MMO structure.
Not a big Diablo fan, huh?

    Item Tiers
With the video posted just today and the interview we posted a few days ago. People are already looking for more clarification on gear tiers in Inferno. Bashiok hit the forums with some information.

Originally Posted by Blizzard (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

We separate out 'item tiers' for their visual appearance first and foremost. We have a number of "armor sets" (18?) in the game that match visually, and so we call them 'tiers' because there's no real better way to say it. When all of your items are from that 'tier', you'll match. That doesn't directly determine their stats, though.

They're spread out in a logical progression, and items get more awesome looking as you go further in the game. Ipso facto the higher the visual tier the better chance it's a more powerful item, but it doesn't preclude the possibility of it being worse. You can absolutely find an item from a visual tier back in Hell difficulty that's better than an item using a later visual tier in Inferno.

It's best to just expunge the term 'tier' from your minds, because it really has nothing to do with any kind of stair step or item upgrade approach. It's just models and textures.

Each Inferno act has its own item tiers?
Wasn't he referring to monster level? I'm pretty sure he was. Link?

"And there are items that ONLY drop at level 61, at level 62 and so on; and they're not small number!"
Thanks, I was skipping around trying to find it.

So yeah, I guess the visual looks are separated out by Act in Inferno. As I said though it doesn't guarantee or preclude an item of a specific 'tier' to be better of worse than another of near proximity.

As I said it's really a non-issue. We need to come up with a better name than 'tier' for the matching art sets, it just makes people think the power is tiered too. Matching art sets!? How about that? Art set? nah....

So, in order to progress to later acts in inferno, you need to find all your gear in inferno because of their looks?
I'm gonna go curl up in a ball.

    Atomix Interview with Alex Mayberry
Atomix has had a chance to site down with Alex Mayberry for another great interview! This time around we get some info about how Blizzard handles the release schedules, some pvp, production and a few other goodies. Feel free to read the quick bullet point summary or watch the full video below for all the good stuff!

    DiabloFans Quote:

    Release Schedules
    • At most companies he has found that the schedules that they make are called "Right to Left" meaning they start at when they want to ship, and basically say "we can only do this amount of game to hit that date." However at Blizzard they start out with "What is the game we want to make" and then they figure out how long its going to take.
    • They have deadlines but they never announce them until they are 100% sure they are going to hit the date because they are always going to be trying new things. If they are not happy with the results, they will just keep trying new things.
    • They always want to have that option to say "Wait, no, its not perfect yet".
    PvP
    • They wanted PvP to be there at launch, but they feel at the initial release people are going to be very focused on PvE and they didn't want to put out a PvP experience that was not perfect.
    • They had so much work on the PvE side, they felt is was better to just wait, and do it right! They would have liked it to be there at launch, however.
    Pleasing Fans
    • The first goal is to get the game to a level they can love. Next they need to open it up to the rest of the company. The team works on something for so many years, they need that fresh look on the game. However, even they are professionals. So then the next step is to open it up to the community and get feedback from there.
    • Every week he gets feedback given to him from many regions rounded up from the forums.
    • They want to see what the fans are saying that they agree with. If they agree they make that change.
    Inspiration
    • All games give them inspiration, everyone at blizzard are gamers, but not just gamers but "students of design" who study what works and does not work.
    • They also gain inspiration from movies and art. Basically anything that inspires them gets added.
    • They have a philosophy that every voice matters, and that extends to the world for them. They want to absorb it all.
    Production
    • He has been working in the industry for over 20 years, and Diablo III was by far the most challenging game.
    • When you look at the finished game it looks kind of simple compared to other games (production wise), but because of what the game engine is doing with all the random possibilities they can't even test all the possibilities because there are infinite possibilities. This makes it extremely challenging.
    Beta
    • They love having betas as it really helps them test in ways they just can't. You can easily have bugs that only show up when only 100,000 people are playing.
    • It also lets them get that last minute feedback from the community that they really love.
    • The open beta helped them find a good 12 to 15 issues that they didn't know about until all those players joined the servers. Though this may have been frustrating for the players, it was fantastic for Blizzard. They were able to find these issues and have them already fixed for when the game is released.
    Cinematics
    • As much work goes into the cinematics as what goes into the game itself.
    • They must stay in constant contact with the cinematics team becasue if something does not match up, its not something they can just go back and change.
    • They need to make sure the story and the environments match up.
    • They have only just recently finished up all the cinematics in the game!!
    Localization
    • Digital copy will be available on may 15th. Physical copy will be in stores June 7th for Argentina.
    • They put a LOT of effort into the translation. It will feel like that game is made for just them.

    Interview with Alex Mayberry
PuntoGames has posted an interview with Alex Mayberry as he made his way through Argentina. Check the previous three interviews. You can watch the full video below the bullet points of the interview.

    DiabloFans Quote:

    Most popular character
    • Classes designed so that each character has a different play style.
    • All classes are equally strong but in different ways.
    • Classes will probably be decided on by play style preference.
    • Alex's favorite classes are the Barbarian and the Wizard.
    Inspiration
    • Team is taken out to watch new movies for inspiration.
    • Inspiration is taken from all over.
    Auction House
    • Wanted to provide a safe environment since it was going to happen outside of the game anyway.
    Randomization
    • Almost everything in the game is random.
    • Dungeons may have 25 rooms but those are pooled from 75-100 rooms.
    • Monster locations and groupings are random with elites randomly added.
    20 years later
    • They wanted to move the story forward to get people past the Diablo II events.
    • Makes the demonic invasion fresh for the characters in the game and new to our characters.
    • Makes Deckard Cain's prophecy harder for the characters to believe.
    Developing Diablo
    • All staff were huge fans of the franchise.
    • Wanted to retain the core of Diablo but expand with newer technology
    • Some things they tried but took back out because it derailed too far from the original games.
    • Ended with a lot of new changes to get use to but hopefully feels the same as the other Diablo games.
    • Wanted to create a game that new and old players would enjoy.
    Consoles
    • Still not announcing any console title but they do have a console team to help create a game that was made for consoles and not just a port.
    Alex's job
    • Alex works with every department and his day-to-day is extremely different but over all, he loves the creativity and perfectionism his job requires to create high quality games.
    • The team does not always agree and those creative tensions create better ideas.
    • The skill system was something that they worked on extensively and one of his greatest efforts.
    Localization
    • Blizzard is expanding globally so they spent extra time with their localization and top tier translators to help create a game that felt like it was made for them instead of just translated.

Ive been to a midnight release of every blizzard game made starting with Diablo 2. Only ONCE have i seen a gaming shop have extra collectors editions.
Well, to be fair, product availability tends to be a little different at our official events. The Fry's we've had most of our official US events at had so many Burning Crusade CE's they still had copies 2+ years after the expansion released.

Quick side query there Bashiok; Why do we not see any Blizzard events in Australia? Namely no Diablo 3 Launch? You have the playerbase here for certain..
We think it'd be keen! But with a regional midnight launch in pacific time it means the down under is about to play in the early evening. Having a midnight launch event didn't make much sense when the servers are up for you at 3-5pm. Open to feedback on that though.

bashiok.. is getting your signature or playing of the game more important?
Signature, as I'm set to be signing until 2am I want as many people as possible to be unable to start playing right at midnight.

    Hardcore Corpse Looting
The decision on whether or not to allow players to loot dead players in Hardcore is not set in stone. Currently, players are unable to but Blizzard is still open to the idea.

So far in my experience feedback on it has been mixed at best, but it's tough to tell the actual Hardcore players from the riffraff. It's important to keep in mind through that without any kind of ladder resets to zero out the economy it could mean a completely different item landscape for Hardcore years down the road. For us, items being removed from the game when a Hardcore character dies is kind of exciting.

Our approach at this point is to see how this works out, because we think being a bit harsher on Hardcore is ok. Absolutely people may be scared to keep items on them, but maybe that becomes part of the fun and the strategy of it. We're taking a wait and see, but definitely after release we'll be interested to hear thoughts from Hardcore players and see how it's working out.

    Treasure Goblin
The Treasure Goblin was currently dropping gold that was shared between all players. They will be changing this so that gold dropped from the Treasure Goblin will drop per-player, however this will not make it in by release.

Here's where it gets interesting: The Treasure Goblin is apparently intended to drop global gold to kind of encourage the party to chase him. However, this is not accurately explained in-game, which is causing this player confusion. We also confirmed that the Treasure Goblin does not drop global items, only global gold.

The developers have decided to change this and make the Treasure Goblin drop individual gold, but the fix will not make it for release. It should come in a future patch after release. I will add this bug to the Known Issues list for when the game comes out on May 15.

Thanks again for your reports, and know that this Beta feedback has helped change the game :)

No, there's no fee to access the currency-based auction house. Any fees are associated with the transactions themselves.

    Loot Disappearing
Items take about 10 minutes to fully disappear. Are you sure you town portal'd back right away?

Also, if you physically dropped items, those items are now set to Free For All for all players.

    Reforging

    Gold
As I've said before, gold is definitely the drop I want most while leveling up my char, and my followers, and my blacksmith, and my stash, and my gems.

    Open Beta
Blizzard is currently having an open beta for Diablo III. If you would like to play you need to hurry because it ends Monday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. Check out the announcement for more information.

Anyone with a Battle.net account can participate. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Public Games
I think we peaked at around 300k concurrent. Total users? I don't know... a lot. (Source)

Why would I want to bang my head against that useless wall of lag you have going on?
I just jumped in, joined a full party, and played for about 15 minutes without every experiencing any lag.

Is that because the server is in the same building as you are?
No... Kaivax IS the server.(Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

A taste of what release will be like
We're bringing the servers back up with very low player caps (meaning we only let a certain number of people on) to monitor stability. If we just let everyone flood in all at once... well I don't think we care to find out what would happen. With the caps off we're more than able to hold everyone (worldwide, mind you) that's helping us test the open beta. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Leveling
Someone on Battle.net questioned the leveling process in Diablo III; primarily, regarding the "lack of thought" needed to play.

It's really a crafted and linear experience to start (both in system introduction and environment) because the first couple hours are the most crucial to a successful and long term experience. We're not in the mindset to drop all of the game systems on you and say "Good luck, sucker!"

To some the approach we're taking is likely a turnoff because they want to feel like they're part of an elite group able to figure out complex and obtuse game systems, and be challenged the second the game begins. I think if they stick with it they'll find that there is a ton of depth and complexity to the game. We put the depth into the gameplay, skill, and decision making itself and not the requirement to overcome the UI or understand how the game even works.

If you're one of those players you're going to blaze through Normal, hit Nightmare, and things are going to start feeling really good for you. You just have to understand that not everyone is like you, and we're making the game so a wide range of people can enjoy it.

I agree with everything here, except the whole "you're going to scream through normal" thing kind of sucks, honestly.
Honestly many people here find the later acts of Normal very challenging (like they can't beat the last boss for weeks on end challenging), but I don't want encourage someone to pull up my words later and say "You said it would be difficult!" :) I'm not sure what additional balancing could happen before release.

    Point Click Controls
Just a reminder here -- like previous games, the shift key holds your character in place.

I utterly love the cursor-based movement of Diablo games, but I've been playing them for 15 years now. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Multi-Boxing
Multiple copies from the same number of multiple computers with the same number of multiple accounts will be fine. You can't, to my knowledge, run more than 1 copy per pc simultaneously though.

Be clear on this though. To a lot of people, multiboxing means multiple copies per computer, not multiple computers which is what the definition really is. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Picking up Gold
You kinda just have to run sort of near it...

Because it's cool to see items and gold explode out of enemies when you kill them. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Pressing 'G'
Pressing G drops your banner. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Mouse for Diablo
I just got a naga hex (which is at work), and it conspicuously has the exact number of buttons needed for all Diablo III skills. I haven't tried it out yet, but if you like the naga it's maybe an option.

Or, ya know, the awesome red glowy official Diablo III mouse - http://steelseries.c...iablo-iii-mouse (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

    Twitter
Vacation ended too quickly. Now off to Korea, Taiwan, and Australia for an eight day press tour. (Source)

Again I'd like to ask, if we went buck wild and tried changing battletags attempting to login, can we change them back per chance?
Not unless you have your free change left. We don't have a system to allow additional changes yet. (Source)

Will reset the achievements after the open beta test? I would like to know whether it makes sense to fulfill them?
Characters and achievements will all be wiped before release. If you don't mind, have fun. (Source)
