he was only a member about 2 days before this all started. He apologized and asked if he could come back.

He's been a member since July 2007; posting since August '07.

And apparently he has decided that he no longer wishes to abide by the promises he made in order to be reinstated.

I'm just saying warn all involved...

I don't understand what is so confusing about this particular point.

Whether or not he started the thread to intentionally goad people, is not the point.

    This wasn't a one-sided affair.
It could have remained so (and ML would be the only one deserving of punitive action) if his detractors had exercised self-restraint.

The ones who decided to attack him were not forced at gun-point to respond.
They are, supposedly, not little children who have no self-control.
They were in control of their own faculties, and made the choice to get involved.
They could have just as easily chosen not to respond, as it says, and has said for a long time, to do in the forum rules.
But they chose to take-part and jump in, hence they should share the consequences along with the OP.

Being trolled isn't a free-pass to get down in the dirt with the troll.
Anyone who uses that as an excuse to justify like-behavior has some growing up to do.

I mean we have this nice reworked system now, but if it's abused and we don't monitor it then it's pointless.

That abuse is still going strong. The "How Much Rep Do You Have?" thread is a major gateway...

I think it was just more of a childish annoyance with positive rep spamming...

It was merely an annoyance up to a point, but they've surpassed that threshold. The positive is being abused just as much as the negative, and the ones who Dae mentioned above are some of the biggest culprits in both directions.

Is there a setting that would make it possible for us to see the post for which rep was given? That would be one thing we could use to, at least begin to, assess if a particular rep point was justified.
And possibly a setting to allow users to report rep abuse, in the same fashion they can report posts, visitor messages, and PMs? We can scan the rep comments if we see conversation about it, but giving the users the ability to report it with a click would help the process (as long as we established limits in the rule).
We have certain criteria for what constitutes a deletable spam post; we should be able to establish a baseline for rep, as well, aye?.

posted a message on Thanksgiving Article - READ THIS
See? Told ya. Unpopular. I'm not saying it shouldn't be posted. I'm just saying I think it's too early for most of the discussion (mainly the stuff that leads to the all too frequent massive arguments) we've seen since The Announcement. Things are nowhere near to being set in stone.

But, anyway... like I said, it's just MY opinion. I know it's not widely held.
I mean, what would people have to bitch and moan about, otherwise?

More to the point, I also have my doubts about how thankful this community will be about an article that doesn't involve new info from Blizzard.
As I've pointed out recently, they've mostly crapped on everything you guys have worked on. We're having to warn people that their whining about the content will be deleted as spam in every article we put up.
If it isn't new, they don't want to hear about it.
An attitude which is slowly making me want to withdraw from this place.

apparently that bothered him enough for him to come forward and want to behave.

And where... EXACTLY... has he displayed that particular pious behavior?

He has shown nothing of the sort, by his continued mockery of the staff.

And what's this future of which you speak? You truly believe he is going to change his current view of us? He played us for fools. Capitulating will only lessen us in his eyes; it will tell him that he BEAT us.

If he were truly as repentant as he has bilked you into believing, he wouldn't have acted like the unmitigated ASS he has shown himself to be.
One who truly wished to amend his ways would be humble.
This guy's ego doesn't allow him to acknowledge the meaning of humble.

You are opening us up to assholery that will know no bounds, because you cave to some smart-ass who knows a trick or two about circumventing weaknesses in imperfect forum software.
