I think there are more successful mods out there, that would definitely attract more people to Diablo 1, such as Middle Earth mod or least known Hellfire The Dark (http://www.thedark5.com/). The second one is definitely my fav and in some ways surpasses for me even Diablo 2 in terms of coop gameplay and difficulty level. It's a totally different experience. Worth checking out. ;)

Diablo was redone a couple of times in different testing versions, that's why there's some confusion to the main character's descent - for all those of you interested in the history of the game I recommend taking a look at http://www.diablo-evolution.com/ - a great site, full of Diablo lore.

lol yes He reminded me of Dhalsim as well.
:offtopic: On reminding note, the WD is for me a nice representation of Tom-Tom or his older brother One Eye from the famous fantasy series The Black Company by Glen Cook. ^_^ (great books btw)

Your Monty Python reference would be better if you got it right.
Pun intended as the topic is on the character of the Inquisitor *sigh*. ;)

The only drawback to playing The Dark is the fact u need the Hellfire files for it to work - other than that, it is full of great ideas, TONS of modifications, concepts and fantastic gameplay. I'd say it really pushes Diablo 1 as close to being the next BIG step towards Diablo 2, as possible. Works at its best in Multiplayer mode of course.

Middle-earth is, as the name suggests, very Tolkien-oriented, but besides that offers many upgrades in the game. Varaya & Khan were (are?) great modders who came up with lots of improvements. Recommended to all hobbit-hype fans, but not only.

I cannot say much about Rebirth unfortunately. Have read about it many times, been chatting even once or twice with Labiri (the author) himself, but after Middle-earth I found it weird and too far-fetched, and after a few casual games just dropped the whole idea.

Tbh for all these years years there were not many great mods for Diablo to play really. One of the few I'd heartily recommend is the Middle-Earth mod (by V&K). It's been greatly described by one of my friends, unfortunately in Polish http://bk.angrenost.org/diablome/info.php. The mod is downloadable from here: http://bk.angrenost.org/DOWNLOAD/me.zip
The other one was Diablo Rebirth - dunno if Labiri is still on it, but he had some great ideas, including a Diablo stash, known from D2 (afaik he succeeded in implementing it in the end :O). I always preferred Middle-Earth from Rebirth, but it's up to you. Cannot find the official page - some version may be downloaded again from BK - http://bk.angrenost.org/DOWNLOAD/reb26.exe
Having said that imho the best mod out there is The Dark. It really is very challenging and exceptional. ^_^
Also, additionally I invite all Diablo Fans to visit http://www.diablo-evolution.com/ - it's a great compendium about the stages of Diablo production, as well as traditional knowledge about the game.
Many useful information about D-modding may also be found on the The Dark forum - http://www.thedark5.com/forum/
I'd also recommend http://bk.angrenost.org/ but unfortunately, as I mentioned above it's in Polish. :(

Ogden (not ODGEN - misspelled in the poll btw) gets my vote. In Single Player mode there's a quest to get the sign of the Tavern back to him - really loved it. And I love his opening lines ("Much has changed..." and "Greetings, good master, welcome to..."). Plus I think the name of the place - "The Tavern of the Rising Sun" is absolutely brilliant.

Hmm, I'd say not really, no. If I were to recommend anything Hellfirish - go play that mod: Hellfire/Diablo: The Dark (http://www.thedark5.com/). It's a great mod - really hardcore, gruesome and has got LOTS of stuff taken from Hellfire, but made in a better fashion than Sierra did in Hellfire or even Blizzard with Diablo for that matter I must say. I recommend it to all Diablo fans. ;) Oh, and on the contrary to Hellfire - it does support Multiplayer mode.

In Poland it's available in shops (empik.com), but only as a part of a Collection feat. Warcraft 2, Starcraft+Broodwars and Diablo.
