posted a message on New to Wizard, looking for direction...
Ok, so I have a few hundred hours into Barbarians (have 3 built, LQ, FC, and WW) and am looking to build some of my alts up. I started a Pet Doctor and am having an ok time with it, but decided I wanted to try Wizard as well. So here I am at level 70 with over 350 paragon and I started running rifts to grab some gear drops along with some gambling. I now have a mishmash of parts and pieces and dont know what direction to go in. I really enjoy the playstyle I have going, which is Arcane Orb - Frozen Orb, spamming that, then using Electrocute - Forked Lightning to build my pool back up. So far it's been a really fun style to play as, much more fun than my WD, and if I could get into the T6/ Grift 28 range, it would probably be more fun than my WW barb too. Link to my character...

So my question is, do I concentrate on Firebirds? Tal Rahsas? With some careful planning, I can run enough parts of both sets with a RRoG and get full bonuses of both sets, but Im pretty sure there is a much better combo out there than having Tal Rasha along with Firebirds. I also have one piece of Vyr gloves in the stash just in case. But basically at the moment Im kind of a lost sheep, aimlessly wandering around T3 and level 18 grfits wondering where do I go from here?

Sorry, I dont have a good answer to initial question, but maybe switching out the Crimsons belt for a Witching Hour might be a little bit of an upgrade? Can anyone else help this guy out?

I still dont have a SoH, so I cant compare, but I have run Schafers Hammer, Fulminator, Odyn Son, and TF and the OS/TF combo is by far the best for my style of play. Fulminator was great at hurting large groups since WW procced it quite a bit, you end up with every single monster zapping all the other monsters around it. But for small groups and single targets, the TF is much better. Thing I love about these lightning WW builds is they arent as gear dependant as other builds like FC or EQ. If you dont have all the Reakors, FC doesnt work. If you dont have enough MoE parts, EQ doesnt work. This type of build works even if you run around in a loin cloth with 2 sticks. Granted you are limited in difficulty with lesser gear, but the build overall works just fine. For the longest time I was running T5 with a devil tongue and fulminator before I found the OS and TF. They arent must haves, but are really nice once you do have them.

Im not sure if it was mentioned or not... is this new set making the rounds in Season 2 before hitting the regular servers, or when 2.1.2 hits will everyone start seeing drops on all servers? Just curious if I need to make a seasons barb to get "early access" to the set before it makes the jump.

My barb pretty much has my wish list. All I really need is a double unity. If I wanted more lightning damage for say T6 runs I could swap the perma ancients with an Andariels helm for an extra 20%, but I dont really need it. T6 doesnt give me too many heartaches right now anyway.

Maybe Andariels and Ice Climbers if Im ditching the ancients anyway, toss in another piece of raekors and run a WW/FC build like Starliath. But I prefer my style of play over the FC anyhow.

Oh, well I feel dumb now. I thought the ring had a 25% affix on it.

Im also not about the leaderboards, but am clearing GR25 right now (was up at 27 with wreath) I typically use the grifts as a measure of how well my builds are working. I know there are good grift rolls and bad rolls in terms of density and map layout, so I usually try to do 4 or 5 and see what the average is. Same with trials... I was netting 27 and 28 keys with wreath and atm Im netting 25 and 26, but trapped isnt at 25 yet either. I know this build will never be a chart topper, but Im always looking to see how far I can push it with my play style (I really dont like the WW/FC build I have seen used to hit in the GR35 range)

If I can land a wyrmward, I will look at swapping out the SoJ. That 25% damage will negate the hexing pants reduction when standing still, so I will still have good single target damage. Im pretty sure I dont have on in the stash right now.

Well, I tried the hexing pants for a few grift trials and runs. Not the biggest fan of constant spinning. I like to stand still to hit single targets and groups didnt seem to fall too much faster with them than without them. Trapped does proc with my thunderfury as everything the lightning hits is slowed by 30% for 3 seconds. So yes Im slowing the whole group, but it's randomly hitting 5 enemies at a time. Also using Frenzy/Smite, I am stunning single targets, which also procs trapped. Speaking of stunning, using hexing pants means I always am using WW, which means I never stun anyone and renders my Vaxo ammy useless. Those two extra clones come in handy in big fights against elites and RGs.

I forgot about that part. Again, Im only at level 5 with it, so it will take a little while to get it up to that point.

As far as Frenzy/FC, mirinae would work much better. I have one leveled up to about 18 or so before I started on toxin. It's great for single targets, but while I was using it with wreath, it only proc'd off my actual physical hits. Even WW proc'd it less than Frenzy did. Maybe at 25 with the every 5 seconds proc it might be better for WW, but it's really just a single target cannon. I use Frenzy for guardians and single elites and WW for groups until they whittle down to a couple of mobs, then swap back to frenzy to clean them up faster. This is the main reason Im not running hexing pants, I dont want to lose 25% damage on a single target and frenzy hits pretty hard.

Well, I was using wreath for the procs for pain enhancer and toxin, which was working well. I swapped out wreath for trapped to check it out and even at level 5, Im only running one or two grifts lower than with a level 25 wreath, so it's working out better. I have tried teaguk before and didnt like the downtime. I have bad luck in grifts where I find large areas with nothing and I drop the stacks. I also use the passive that gives extra damage at full resource, so I dont like to spam Battle Rage while running between areas to keep the stacks up.

Oh and I will say that trapped probably wouldnt have worked out well without my Thunderfury as I wouldnt have had any control impairment other than Frenzy/Smite, which is only single target. At least Thunderfury can hit 5 enemies when it procs.

Even with 85% lightning damage? It's hitting crits of 2mil on everything it touches for the most part. I know thats not super high end compared to other crtis, but it's a good aoe for me. I will try swapping it with trapped and see what happens, but typically wreath is decent for me.

Ok, so at the moment Im using Pain Enhancer, Wreath of Lightning, and Gem of Toxin. Would it be worth swapping out the Pain Enhancer for Bane of the Trapped? I just recently learned about how different things are multiplicative and it seems "trapped" multiplies everything else on top. So wreath of lightning starts the chain by poisoning mobs, giving them 10% increased damage then as I move in with WW, trapped will multiply that damage by another 15% when I get close enough with the aura.

Or is the pain enhancers DOT enough to counter act the 15% increase of all incoming damage?

Hmmm... that is all very good to know and I can translate that math over to my barb as well. Very useful information there. If there is one area of this game I struggle with it's the math behind it.

Ok. Thanks for that input as well. Right now I think I have about 50% physical and 20% poison. My barb has 85% lightning and has awesome aoe with the wreath gem and all the other lightning goodies on. I will concentrate on stacking what I can for now until I start getting the key parts of the build. Thats always the hardest part, building up the in between parts until you find the one key piece that really unlocks the true potential of a build and takes it to the next level.
