Blizzard said it was for more people, but it doesn't mean thats all its for. Before they had 2 halls for 2 franchises. This year they are expanding to 3. There is a third franchise. There has been a TON of activity regarding Diablo, most notably the takeover of Diablo3.com.

Actually, work on D3 started not too long after D2:LOD was released. However, it was brought back to the drawing board around the time that Blizzard North fell apart.

It's my opinion that just because they haven't said anything substantial about it in a long while, that doesn't mean they haven't been working on it in some capacity in the years since then.

it explicitly says the reason for the third hall right there... anyway, I was talking to an old WoW friend on msn the other day after I started playing d2 again... he said that his reliable blizzard source says diablo 3 is in the alpha stage of production.

All speculation aside, I am going with 9/20/09 as the release date of the game.
