The game you played is called Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and it's expansion Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne.
The game World of Wacraft that you see in stores is not the same game that you used to play.

If you would be so kind as to explain why such a thing is considered to be bad?
He clearly explains his points in that post. If a point needs elaborating or further discussion beoynd a simple yes or no, he does so. Personally I couldn't have said it better. Though I might have left out some of the parts about the disccussion about dumb and/or intelligent people and just stuck to the topic at hand. Quests.
What you describe is awfully reminescient of the various computerised Dungeons and Dragons games, namely Baldur's Gate II. Often in some ofthe larger quests which more often that not require you to infiltrate a cultist lair or somekind and discover their activities, you are given the choice of directly storming the place and killing anything with a pulse (and on the odd occasion stuff without a pulse (Undead)), or you can try to use a more stealthy approach an pretend to be a member. The latter usually provide you with more quests and items. Both are adequette ways of dealing with the situation.Well, a game without quests being meaningless might be ones opinion, yet even if it is its simply wrong, there are numerous games that do not have anything to do with quests, storyline, etc... So they are all considered to be meaningless? Thats just a ridiculous conclusion.
Personally i love well-thought out (side)quests in roleplaying games, but then i expect to have quests which are actually better then the complete moronic boredom you had in say a game like Oblivion and i expect the game to actually be a roleplaying game where you can make choices as to what sort of character you become (choices where "fighting" is but one of them, thus again ruling out games like Oblivion/Sacred 2), else don't even bother. Maybe a hack&slash with well thought out questing could very well work, but i have yet to see one thats actually better then your average "do this, do that", which i obviously do not want in Diablo. I would love to see some random quests return as in D1, but don't over flood the player with them just because you lack the imagination and talent to make one good one. Diablo never was about questing, Diablo is about creating numerous hack&slash characters.
Personally I go with the latter in the above instance.
Random quests are what maketh the game IMHO. To take the example of Baldur's Gate II again, there is nothing like stumbling acroos a blood soaked street littered with the rotting (and more importantly skinless) corpses, only to find out that the seemingly simple case of a serial killer offing a few bums is actually a much more deeper, darker case of something rivalling Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. The event is totally random, you just happen upon it.
Actually almost all of the 300 (err maybe it's more like 400, 400, 500? let's just say 400 and call it even, ok) or so quests in that game are side quests and very few are ever really forced upon you. And the ones that are, you kinda have to actually go to the place the NPC is and be with a certain radius of them. You can walk passed them and not get the quest.
I am not saying Blizzard should emulate Baldur's Gate, but in regards to quests it's certainly a well thought out game. Even the mindless generic "fex-ex" and "grindfest" quests don't seem as boring, mostly because the NPC never explicitly tells you how many things he needs or how many creatures he needs to to kill. Do so always makes it more boring I feel. Seems Blizz got that down pat in Diablo 1 and 2. Kill the high Council members, that was the quest, did it feel like one of the kill x amount of y quests that so plague WOW, nope. You knew you had to kill all 6 of them, but no where did it actually say there was 6 of them nor did it list each member and preceed their name with the 0/1, like such a quest would have in WOW (or all MMO's not sure haven't played many).
But then again there was only 6 of them, Not like in the Den of Evil quest. Which it seems did the reverse. It told you directly how many you had left to kill (so long as it was 10 or less) rather than telling you exactly how many you had killed. -

Erebus posted a message on Mobs that looks slightly different by BashiokI think you guys are thinking that this is something that can be solved solely by a programmer. While programmers are without a doubt very important to game development, it's not just a matter of a guy sitting at a keyboard and typing some code to get what you want. Give some credit to the hundreds of artists who design and create by hand every model in the game from scratch. A lot of the discussion here is based purely on imagination. Can what you guys are talking about be done? Surely. Can it be done easily to a game that is already in progress and wasn't planned from the start of the modeling process to function that way, thats a tad bit harder than you are suggesting.Posted in: News & Announcements
All the characters are a SINGLE mesh, you don't put them together like Spore animals. The creation of the models in the game and how they are arranged is not a code intensive process in and of itself. Even the randomly generated environments have walls that are pre-modeled and just arranged in different configurations by the game engine. Having all the spikes as different meshes could work, but it on the most basic level would take more polygons and thats just a waste when you are trying to make an efficient model unless it's something that HAS to be done. -

Equinox posted a message on What are your Thoughts on this man?I don't mind Dr. Kaku, he's a scientist and I respect them. I do, though, mind spreading of false ideas, such as "because the universe is <insert the newest scientific theory here>, God cannot exist". There are two positions that, I believe, an intelligent person can take:Posted in: General Discussion (non-Diablo)
1. Positive agnosticism. We don't know what's out there. Afterlife is probably not in the world's agenda. Let's make the most of our existence and not spoil that of others:
"Now that we know that the only thing on the other side of the sky is more sky, the idea of an afterlife has finally been slid into the history books alongside the rest of the quaint and forgotten religions. With heaven and hell gone we are faced with the necessity of making a heaven or hell right here. What with societies and metatechnology and allied disciplines we have come a long way and life on the civilized worlds is better than it was during the black days of superstition. But with the improving of here and now comes the stark realization that here and now is all we have. Each of us has only this one brief experience with the bright light of consciousness in that endless dark night of eternity and must make the most of it. Doing this means we must respect the existence of everyone else and the most criminal act imaginable is the terminating of one of these conscious existences." (James Bolivar DiGriz, The Stainless Steel Rat)
2. Deism. God(s)' existence can be derived logically. But God does not interfiere, hence we should work by ourselves, for ourselves. It can also be derived that human cooperation is intended judging from natural processes, and it leads to more success than human hostility/singularity aka survival-of-the-fittest mentality:
"My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power, which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe, forms my idea of God." (Albert Einstein)
"We are made for cooperation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. To act against one another then is contrary to nature." (Marcus Aurelius Antoninus)
So far, I have yet to be presented with any other philosophy that makes the slightest sense and benefits humanity. Either of those two, if followed, would lead society in the right direction, and they allow enough room for people of varying beliefs and philosophies, rather than shutting a person into "do this, this, and that". With any belief or philosophy, you can't just forget about human nature.
Type 1, if we're talking about the same thing (maximum use of Earth's resources) is not anywhere near as important as media familiarity and human unity as one singular species. -

Even as the demon's sword impaled his chest and sent him hurtling back in to a rotting, ancient pillar, the vile creature grinned insidiously.
Darrian struggled to his feet and fixed his hands upon the handle of his massive weapon, "In the name of Torm I cast this demon back to the Nine Hells!"
As his hammer fell throw the air, a distant enchantment echoed throw the shadows: "Praeses, Alia, Fero!"
Darrian's hammer stopped as if it had crashed into wall and then become stuck in it. His eyes contorted in confusion and surprise, "What new devilry has this creature summoned?"
A man slid out of the shadows to his right, robed in brown, his thumb and middle finger fixed on his temples, his right hand extended toward the motionless hammerhead. His hands then fell, his concentration broken, and he looked hard at Darrian, "The demon has said that your anger feeds him- do not raise your weapon upon him just yet-"
Darrian nudged him away, "Who are you- no, you do not concern me. Go about your business, there is a demon to be slayed and a wizard will not step in my way!"
He slung his hammer once again throw the air and in to the robed demon. He was tossed aside like a rag doll in a hurricane, tattered, blackened robes and bits of shadow collapsing and hurtling to the ground.
"See? There is no beast that can withstand my hammer!" laughed Darrian haughtily.
As he spoke the demon raised itself from the dusty floor, growing taller and larger than before, a thicker darkness and twang of terror upon him this time. His sword seemed somehow more solid and flickered with a wicked black lightning. His eyes grew brighter still, and he laughed.

They aren't all bad. There were a few good ones, and everyone does have a right to discuss the possibilites.

Oh, okay. I guess it just depends on your point of view, then. For instance, I'm really sick of people with 3 posts coming in and when I say, "There's always a possibility that it won't be Diablo III- like MD said, it could also be WC IV or just more hype for WotLK," saying to me, "Evry1 who thinkz is WC4 F U!!one11!"
The majority of people that have this pattern of joining, posting once or twice, and then never posting again once the event(s) is(are) over 1) have no information to back up their argument, 2) are hopeless fan bois that ignorantly believe things without proper review of the facts, 3) flame for no reason, 4) don't thoroughly read through posts and then flame the person, 5) spam incessently, 6) all post "I've been watching this forum for x years and have been playing Diablo since it came out," 7) regurgitate what has already been said at least once on every single page and then say, "WTF I DONT WANTZ 2 REED TEH HOLE F***IN THRED!!", and 8) are usually very immature about their posts.
Given, there are exceptions, and immaturity on a site for a game is okay (in general, though since this game is technically for adults, this shouldn't be an issue.) I've seen this time and time again, and you have to understand, from where I'm standing it gets very, very annoying.

Yeah, a Blizzcast was ruled out. Supposedly, the next two Blizzcasts will not be Diablo-related. That's also a good thing- it could mean that they're too busy (the Diablo team) to do a Blizzcast.

That really has nothing to do with the angel itself.
That's exactly what I'm saying. They're beyond our rules. It's obviously going to confuse us because it would be like trying to define a banana with HTML- we are something completely different than them.
If were are to assume that there are angels, then we have to assume we, too, have spirituality. That is the level, then, that a "spirit" would communicate on. But, in another sense, if you assume there are angels, then something must have created them, unless you want to buy in to some kind of spiritual evolution or something, like some new agers do. If we are to assume then, for sake of argument, that angels do exist, and that they also have a creator, we would have to assume that the same being created our spirituality, and, thus, everything that would come along with that, primarily meaning everything, at which point the creator would be called "god". And if this god were to create everything, he or she would have no chains to our rules, and thus be able to change them or go beyond them at anytime he/she so wishes. So, this god could command the angel to appear to deliver some kind of divine message, and then take whatever necessary steps he or she so chooses to keep that creature from being defined quantitatively.
