The problem of the wizard is that her Surv. is cooldown based. She also has too many spells that require her to be stationary, in a game where elites are lightning fast and hit like trucks.
If you try a build with Arcane Orb / Magic Missile or Sphere and 4 defensive other spells you'll have very little issues.

Otherwise, if you try to be creative and use disintegrate, ray of frost, arcane torrent or any other gimmicks you will get your ass handed to you unless you overgear the mobs.
I'm sure on Normal and Nightmare any build will work if used correctly. I'm currently in the A2 Nightmare, running with the super offensive Desintegrate-based build (http://us.battle.net...XgjS!YXb!aZaZaZ) - no problems so far. With 1600+ damage self-buffed (lvl 28-33 gear) and +20% damage in the warped time bubble everything gets melted down faster than I start taking any damage. I only died twice in NM so far and only because I got reckless.

I actually just tried your build and it is absolutely superbilicious! Thanks :D.

    Hey guys!

Thought I'd share my thoughts and personal build for the Wizard, as I've gotten into this game (man, it's so damn epic!)

    Here is my build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#bcYlQT!YVZ!baaaZb

I find the largest problem to be the arcane power shortage, even when using 'Power Hungry' as a passive skill (which stirs up another issue I will delve into further down!) I have a level 39 wizard and am currently fighting my way through Act II (Nightmare - solo) and this build works quite well, even though kiting may occur.

Having the passive ability 'Paralysis' greatly helps the passive ability 'Shock Pulse', as it increases the time it takes for the enemy to get close to you due to the stun chance, it also does not drain any mana and is quite quick to cast. You can see from the rune that I'm using the 'Piercing Orb' rune, which I selected mostly for range and convenience. I would use the 'Fire Bolts' rune (due to increased damage) if it were not for the fact that it has got such a short range and is unpredictable. The 'Fire Bolts' rune only seems to work really well at short range where enemies suck up most of the spell, but this leaves you vulnerable to attacks.

Arcane orb is the secondary attack, and I would argue that this is probably the best skill at this point (?) together with disintegrate. The problem with them is that they're arcane-drainers... That's why I've added the 'Power Hungry' passive ability, to attain more arcane power as I slaughter monsters. The only great issue overall with this build is the fact that if you meet 'rare' mob groups the arcane damage is obsolete to the way they get close to you. You are forced to more or less kite them.

This is why I've added the 'Frost Nova' ability with the 'Shatter' rune, so that I can kite more efficiently and still have a chance to freeze them one more time before they get at me (at which point I usually use my teleport ability to regen a bit and wait for cooldowns. This is where I'll spam my primary ability until they get up close again.) Before this I always try to add a blizzard to slow them down further, but it usually costs too much arcane power.

I added 'Glass Cannon' to increase the overall damage output, it reduces armor/resistance however.

    Conclusion:
I would like to carry on with this build, because I think it works quite well, the biggest problem is how squishy you become, which means your items require a lot of vitality (and intelligence helps a lot, of course.) If you get your HP up there you can stand still and freeze/arcane orb the crap out of your enemies, and regen through their health globes (power hungry!)

It feels like it could be improved however, so if you have any ideas, let me know.

    Hello,

I have news. (Obviously I didn't make the deadline!)

Due to my job now I am not allowed to work on this project for a while, so I will return to it at a later stage. I signed a paper which basically does not allow me to continue working on it for a while. I will finish the project in the future though. I will probably make something else at that point as well. Please keep an eye open for the next couple of months (though I'm sure you guys will be deeply enveloped within the Diablo III universe, as you should be!) I will probably be returning to the Diablo universe at some point in the future, so I won't disappear. That's pretty much the good news and the bad news.

Thanks so much for following this thread, you've all helped me become a better artist. I hope that you will follow some of my work in the future. I will create a blog worthy of my time, in the future. I will post it on this forum for all to see. It will contain all sorts of projects which you might enjoy! Expect a lot of sci-fi.

I hope that you all understand my gratitude and that you can forgive me for being so silent the past couple of weeks!

I will be more active on these forums as the game comes out (maybe some of us can play together even! Is there a Diablofans 'clan' yet?) Let me know!

Thanks again for all of your support, you all made the difference. STAY TUNED FOR A BLOG LINK!

does her nose look to far from her lips or does she just have thick full lips?

Certainly. Awesome work overall but the lower part of the face is not well-proportioned. And the skull is too receding.

Thanks. I have already changed this, will display the changes in the next update :).

You have extremely serious talent. That's already the concensus, so this doesn''t add much to the conversation, but I had to say it anyway. LOL!

    Thanks :) !

That scarf looks great. Looks like it could be velvet or something, I can see the tiny details on it.

Glad you noticed the details, it'll be fun making a super high resolution render when it's done. Thank you!

I just read all of this and it was awesome to follow the progress of the demon hunter! Congratulations on your DICE internship! Any more news on that? :)

She looks really great, and the red scarf is gorgeous! :D

Thanks a lot, I can't talk about work here, sorry :D.

I think there's something wrong with the head part. Something's off... maybe the head is too big or the neck is too short or both? But other than that everything is perfect lol maybe too perfect XD Maybe you could add a little wear and tear here and there. just an opinion :D

Hey :). I'm happy to hear input. I think by now I have established most of the proportions for the character, I think you may be thrown off by the scarf which covers up most (if not all) of the throat/neck. This can make things seem a bit strange, and I will look into it a bit later, perhaps I will deform the scarf a little to reveal more skin. Wear and tear will be added in the pass I'm currently working on. Thanks!

Good luck! I am very excited to see how this is going to finish out for you. So far it's looking incredible.

I am excited to see how it'll turn out as well. Thanks :D.

    Oh, hell yeah!

You should so win that. Link them to this thread so they see all the work in progress xD.

I considered putting up the wax/clay model which I put up months ago for you guys, but I want to texture it as I'm not sure people would appreciate this piece in its untextured state as much. So if I know I will not be able to finish it in time I'll put up the old presentation image. Otherwise I'll keep rolling with the version I am working on now.

    ----------------------------------

So I have a little update, unfortunately no images since what I have to talk about is just technical stuff and probably boring to see anyways. I'm basically preparing the entire body for 'colouring', which requires some time since each piece must be meticulously prepared, you can't just paint directly onto the surfaces :).

So instead of doing one piece at a time I am now preparing all the pieces so that I can do different colour passes and get a better feel for what needs to be changed, instead of having to change one piece at a time in the future. So far it's going great, I'm almost halfway with the preparation and I've spent 1-2 days on this phase. So within a few days I should be able to start colouring this model fully. I have exactly two weeks left until the deadline but I would like to be finished a few days before the competition closes. So keep an eye out and I'll post some more updates on how things are going over the next hours/days.

Thanks for your patience and lovely support, and please stay tuned :).

    Hey guys!

    A little update:

    http://reveal.diablo...lery/most_liked

I'm going to be joining this competition, to force myself to finish this piece. This means I will have approximately 3 weeks to finish it. Now you're guaranteed to get lots of little updates! :) Wish me luck.

EDIT: I'll make sure to answer the previous questions in my next post! ^^

    -> Stream is up! http://www.justin.tv...e#/w/2822044800

Enjoy some music and hopefully we can have a nice session. :)

I've been asked by several people to do this so I may as well just go ahead and stream (got a payed account and everything, so now I'm obliged to stream regularly anyways. Maybe I'll do a voice over soon and go through the process on the go.)

Hope you enjoy it, and if not, well, you can always close it and see the results here later :).

EDIT: Stream is down :) thanks for watching (will work offline now, and post some results tomorrow!)

First time looking into this thread. And I must say, I am astounded by your talent, skill and determination. And even though I don't even know you haha, im proud of you because you work hard and now you have landed a career job so to speak doing something you like.

Inspiration if I've ever seen it, keep it up mate.

Also goes to show that diablofans has an awesome and supportive community.

This community is great. This thread is almost a year old and people are still following it, amazed!

Wow man, you have some mad skills. Huge props! :dh:

    Thanks man :).

    --------------------

Alright guys, I've spent the last few days thinking about the colour palette. Now, I think it may be great to have the scarf/hoodie red, because not only will it make the character pop, but it will also give the piece much more contrast. Looking over the concept, it's a little bit dull to have a brown/black hood. I thought it would be nice to follow the style of the in-game character from the beta (which I spent way too many hours playing months ago, only to get my character wiped in a big patch -ugh!- :).)

This is the direction I would like to try. I'm going to keep this red scarf/hoodie. I'll make a leather variation at a later stage anyways. So don't worry if this discomforts you! This is a work in progress too, it will change to look more photorealistic within the next few updates.)

As always, I hope you like it! More armor pieces coming within the next day or two (hopefully) :). Stay tuned.

Sorry for keeping you guys in the dark for so long guys, I've been pretty busy at DICE. I'm still working on some things in preparation for the texturing, so check in in the future and once you actually see a new update, things will be smooth sailing. Don't fret, this thread won't die :).

    Hell yeah, that's back too!

Haha :D, tack! (that's thank you in Swedish!)

Awesome, and grats! She looks amazing, of course. I'm loving that potion bottle strapped on her belt!

Can't wait for more updates! :D

Thank you :). New updates will be presented soon!

    Aaaawesoome!

Looks so cool, the amount of detail is superb!

I take it you'll be coming to Sweden then if you got a EA Dice internship? If so, welcome :)! (If you are already Swedish and live here, then congratulations anyways!)

    :kitty:

I already live here :). I'm a 'Gothenburger' (no, I'm not a goth and I am not associated with any burger company) but I live in Stockholm for my studies (I don't have a Gothenburger dialect.) Tack! ^^

    This looks awesome.

Haha! A meme! I shall respond accordingly:

    Thanks a lot!

Really nice! I'm loving it. Can't wait to see the full rendered one!

    Glad you like it.

i am 20 y/o and i am not even half as good, you make me feel bad about my skills
i have two questions, how did you get that good ? (self taught or courses) and how long it took to reach that level ?
    gratz on the internship btw

Hey :). I've been modeling for a fair few years now (started April 2008). I tried Autodesk Maya at first but it didn't really appeal to me because I was into modeling and not other 3d disciplines. I started working with 3ds max shortly after I dismissed Maya, and then things went much smoother. At the time, I was studying in upper-secondary school so I was self-taught and worked during my spare time to improve my knowledge and workflow. I worked on several modification projects (implementing self-made models into finished game engines) to make models for a 'cause' and to form some sort of drive/goal which I could push myself towards. It's rewarding in many ways, as you learn to work with groups and you get to know people within your profession. However, it can also be tedious (I have had my fair few quarrels in the past!) :P

Really, I want to become better at modeling, and my aims today are pretty much the same as they always have been, under different circumstances however. I think the key to becoming good at something is to ignore the contemplation of time and resources put into learning said skill. Everyone I talk to always brings up the subject of "I've been doing this for - insert timeframe - and I feel like I've been wasting my time". I don't think the time invested in other priorities are 'wasted'. I believe that everything a person does pretty much gives them more flexibility. With this mentality you can skip a lot of stress. Some may call it procrastination, I feel like it's just another form of inspiration. You don't need to go to school to learn this stuff by the way. As long as you're interested in the subject, you can scavenge the internet for information (the irony is that many educations are built upon foundations of knowledge located on the web/internet in the first place)

Hope my words suffice for an answer!
