posted a message on Scrapped D3 expansion?

I think the more likely explanation is that Blizz tried to make a new expansion and they didn't like what it had turned into, and instead of giving us an expansion they weren't happy with they turned the good parts into patch content and the bad content got cut.

That does leave the question what happens next though.

I assume a new expansion or even Diablo 4 will get worked on, but they may not be ready to announce anything about that yet, especially with the Director position in flux.

They'll have to do something soon-ish though, cause relying on just season content will mean the game slowly loses ground.

posted a message on Poll: Are you going to play season or non-seasonal?

Non season. Purely because I don't understand enough about seasonal play.

It does appeal to me tho, focus on new chars, (played wiz n monk since season 3 when I discovered Diablo!)

new start, new grind and new targets.

This game has well n truly got its claws into me and season play looks like a way to keep things fresh and make the experience of Diablo last longer.

Am I correct in this way of thinking or am I getting the wrong end of the stick...?

Yep. You start over with nothing, and build from the start, and see how far you can get.

It's mostly attractive for those of us who have played non-season a fair bit and would rather enjoy the build up again then the long term play of refining gear.

It depends on your own progression, and how much time you have and how much you enjoy the grind from level 1 to being able to do a Greater Rift at 70 or something.

If you are interested you should just try it once and see how you feel about it. Everything you collect on Season will get transferred to non-season after the season is over, so it's never wasted effort. :)

Anyway, my point is that IF Blizzard chose Starcraft (its most successful RTS despite only getting one sequel about a decade too late) or Diablo (the games that sucked the souls of entire generations away and caused countless GPAs to drop horrendously), we would be playing different card games and waiting on different movies. Warcraft became the "bread and butter" of this company because they CHOSE to focus on it. They could've CHOSE to focus on their other franchises and had equal or greater success (unless they focused on their pre-Warcraft games of course).

Fantasy settings still dominate both the MMOscape and bigger CCGs, I don't think you could have plugged Starcraft into the same level of success in those genres. Diablo would also have to be an even more watered down setting to work as an MMO, the space in Warcraft for bright locations and lighthearted humor adds important variety for a game you are (were) supposed to play full-time to the exclusion of other games. Which also applies to hearthstone intentionally turning up the silly factor even more, to entice players traditionally put off by competitive games.
I agree with the notion that the humor that Warcraft did and does was part of it. The other part is that the Knights in armor, and castles and elves and beautiful looking places is a much more prevalent fantasy for people than the dark and brutal atmosphere of Diablo. The market would always be bigger for a world that people can relate to from the fairy tales they hear from the time they are very small.
That doesn't mean that if a game version of Diablo was made with a persistant world that it would bomb. Diablo and it's atmosphere have it's own subsect of followers and fans. It would work.

posted a message on Poll: Are you going to play season or non-seasonal?
    Quote from Bagstonego-next

    • Are you going to make a sprint for the stash tab or are you even going to skip that?
    • What did you play in the previous five patches (season or NS)?
    • What's your reason to play season or non-season in 2.4.1, respectively?
    • What factors are most important for your decision (what streamers do, what your clan does, what your friends list does, where the perceived majority of players is, where leaderboards are easier to reach/more contested, or what this poll tells you ;-))?
    1) I'll definitely play till I have the stash tab. I fizzeled out when I got it this season, but the conquests are easier and less time consuming for S6, so I'll probably stick around to complete the journey this time.

    2) Played every season to get the rewards, always play WD. I've played increasingly more the last few seasons, since the content was more fun and the progression stayed meaningful for longer.
    3) Always play season, it's just fun to start over and have that winding road through the different gear and builds again till you hit the end where you stop progressing mostly and just push with your main build to get results.

    4) I only look at what I feel like doing, and what 1 or 2 friends are doing. But the basics for all of us are the same, we play together when we're online, and we play seasonal cause it's more fun. Classes we play are more fluid. I always pick WD, others play different things sometimes. We don't hold eachother back in that regard though. We don't really chase meta group compositions or anything.

posted a message on Do you think Diablo 3 will get another expansion?

Before last Blizzcon, before they announced what they had planned for Greyhollow Island and before they announced the Cube, I was convinced we were getting an expansion. 6 months later I'm far more pessimistic.

They've done artwork for several seasons worth of portraits. They've done other cosmetic stuff too, like wings. It doesn;t take much effort to continue the current content. Item here or there, some bug fixes, slap some balancing changes on some stuff, and you can do a season reset and basically have people entertained again for 3 or 4 months. After the cube patch there's really not much they have to add.

Between paragon, getting Ancient items, legendary gem leveling, Caldesann's leveling and the season reboot every few months there's something for everybody to aim for that is within their reach, and within their playtime scope that thay can do to progress and have fun. There's not much that needs to be added to that. In fact putting even more layers of progression on top of it is probably making it too much. The Caldesann's thing was already a really long term, high end goal they introduced that most of the players will hardly touch.

So the current state of the game is that it is set up to work well long into the future, and even if they added nothing further apart from balance changes the game would continue to draw players in every season/patch to play some more and have a perfectly good time.

So what does that mean for the future? The game doesn't need much technically, but there's also the story. We're actually at a perfect spot in the story to do a reboot. All the Evils are free again, cause of Malthael. It would make for a bit of a strange turn to now suddenly fight Diablo again, for the second time in this game's life. And who else is there? Who is a big enough villain or threat to realistically both threaten our Nephalem Hero's AND not infringe on the story of Diablo being the big bad evil of the franchise. The only remote threat there is is Imperius, should he feel threatened enough to start an attack on us. But frankly I wouldn;t like that story at all. Imperius may be a grumpy asshole, but he;s still an Angel, and he's still on the relatively good side of spectrum in Sanctuary. I'd hate to have to suddenly start fighting Angels.

And what of our Heroes? How much further can they grow lore wise, they are already peerless, even among their nephalem kind, at some point it's just not realistic anymore to have them continue to become more powerful. At some point you need a reset.

So storywise we are at a perfect place for a reset, and the game is set up to continue to be fun to play and engaging longterm, with minimal development needed. And then you come to the dagger, the point that is most telling to me: We've not heard ANYTHING about a new expansion. There was no hiring being done, there's been no hints by Blizz that there'd be a continuation, there's been absolutely nothing. In fact the one thing that Blizz has done that points to anything is that they've started hiring for a different game in the Diablo world. All of that is combining into a sobering conclusion that Blizz is probably not going to make an expansion for Diablo 3.

I'm pretty sure we will hear something at Gamescom this year or later at Blizzcon perhaps, but given all I wrote, I do not think it will be an expansion. I think it will probably be Diablo 4, with D3 continuing to get small content updates throughout development of the successor, but in most ways being finished.

I really hope I am wrong though. I'd love an expansion, cause I love my Heroes and I'm not sick of them yet and won't be for a long time. I hope their story continues.

IMO, if they were adding in things like Greed's Realm and Set Dungeons a few patches after RoS, I'd probably still be playing. But, nope, Diablo 3 is and always will be (because YOU, the players, won't allow anything else) a loot treadmill.

I love the world and the story and you guys love the loot and figuring out new ways to kill the same stuff. Blizzard sided with you guys. :(

Well, they are apparently hiring for a new project in the Diablo world, so maybe they'll introduce some new type of game that caters more to the people that enjoy the atmosphere and the stories. I certainly hope they do.

I love the loot whoring nature of D3, but I love the story and the atmosphere too. I'm hoping I can have more of both some day. :D

Whatever they do I hope it digs into the lore side of Sanctuary more. They have so many settings and back story they can explore, I;d love to know more about.

If I'm honest, I;d also like to explore certain places more, and have more of a free roam ability. A World of Diablo would definitely tickle my fancy.

We'll see what it is though. I don't think Blizzard is even near announcing anything about this project. If anything we'll get an expansion announcement at Blizzcon, and that's it.

This is why I want more of an MMO feel to the Diablo franchise.

I do not want it to be an MMO where you use 20 skills, have slow battles with groups of 15+. I want it to stay groups of 3-4 players in a party, ad focus purely on hack n slash.

    Agreed.
I think Blizzard learned in WoW that large group raiding is fun to some, but FAR more people enjoy good small group content.
If they can create small group content in an MMO setting they could pull it off. What they'd need is the randomness of Rifts, but slightly more limited. Make specific sets of mobs, combined with specific environments, and create Rift like situation in them where you have to kill enough till the bar is full, and then kill 1 Rift boss like boss at the end. Same 4 man max group as right now.
Create like 10-15 of those rift dungeon sets, and implement a Greater Rift like system where if you complete 1 difficulty, you can upgrade to the next one. That should give people a TON of PvE content to do. Creater more of those sets with every patch, and hey presto. Different sets have different demands and risks, creating some diversity and making it necessary to use a certain build for this dungeon, but a much different one for that dungeon. Promote diversity in playstyle and gear aquisition that way.

That's the basis of end game content to me. You can add typical MMO elements like open world content with mobs everywhere and rare/yellow mobs to spice things up, a faction system where you can get reputation, and reputation leads to good rewards and cosmetics and just a really solid profession system where you can learn to craft things that are needed for the game: gear, item enhancements, consumables, cosmetic stuff.
And all of it in Sanctuary, where you can just visit all the actual places, and actual people, and have this thick lore gravy on top of everything.

Then again, this might just be for D4 and be the same old isometric ARPG that we know and love. I;d be perfectly okay with that too. :D

posted a message on Will you play seasons now there will no longer be season-only items?

I like the change. It was strictly a punishment for non-season players, making it so they didn't have build defining items, and they effectively replaced the incentive for doing seasons by adding cosmetic stuff like portraits, pennants and pets. I think it's fine this way, there's plenty of incentive to run seasons, and everyone gets to play with fun and build defining items that get added.

posted a message on BlizzCon 2015 - Diablo is dead

I doubt they'd screw up the schedule to the point where they forgot to add Diablo panels. That's pretty much the basics you start with, especially for a big release.

Also, they announced RoS at Gamescom and vanilla D3 was initially announced at Blizz's attempt at a european Blizzcon at the World Wide Invitational in 2008. So they've never announced anything at Blizzcon itsself. So, I don;t think it's unlikely they do an announcement later, at one of the Pax conventions or at Gamescom again.

About the "D3 is not WOW" thing. That's true, but if you have this many people that indicate that they'd like to see some expansion sized new content in D3, it makes every bit of sense for Blizz to provide it. Golden opportunity to get a ton of cash from box sales again. In that sense, if profitability was an issue they'd have started on a new expansion long ago, to make more money. The fact they haven't, to me, shows D3 is plenty profitable still. But I'm sure Blizz has an excellent financial department that tells them when it's a good idea to get a new expansion out, from a financial persepctive. Apparently that moment is not yet here.

posted a message on BlizzCon 2015 - Diablo is dead

I'm loving all of this negativity in this thread so far. You realize that RoS wasn't announced at BlizzCon yes? So they don't reveal an expansion at BlizzCon, there are several other gaming expos that they could announce an expansion during. I mean we already know that they brought in new people for a Diablo franchise project.

People just want to know what the next expansion is. RoS was announced in August 2013, released in March 2014. That means the time frame puts it so the next expansion will have been released more then 2 years after the previous one. That's quite a long time, even with seasons and patches adding content.
Adding the Cube was a genius move, but it did not alter the content we are playing itself, nor the classes we are playing with. There's only so much repeating the current content you can do before it gets stale. I'm guessing judging by the reactions that for many people that time has just about come. We need a major shake up, which an expansion would provide. Adding a whole new act and a new class would begin a new age of replayability for many people.
So it's perfectly understandable people are upset that there's apparently no announcements yet, at a time that seemed perfect to make one. It's just disappointment. :)

Not what I expected of the schedule. Even if they do a reveal, we'd still only get 1 panel worth of actual information. Given that this probably means there's not going to be any reveal, period, I'm a bit annoyed. This 1 panel we are getting better be filled to the brim with exciting information. =/
