OKAY! I have started this all over fresh. No confusing posts. We've got this all figured out. (lol). So - the other day, SpanishBard suggested that I implement some sort of 'anchor' function on the boards. For those of you unaware of what anchoring is, I present you with the following definition...
Quite simply, an 'anchor' in this case is any word / term / phrase that you wish to draw attention to. This is accomplished by creating a second word / term / phrase - called an 'anchor link'. The 'anchor link', when clicked, will take you down to the 'anchor'. Usually putting it at the very top of the page.
In lamen's terms (as requested): A link within a post or thread to another specific part of that post or thread.
I know that's a bit complicated, so here's an example...
This is the [thread link="any term"]'anchor link'[/thread link]
The code for the above word is (without the *): [THREAD LINK*="any term"]'anchor link'[/thread link]
The code for the below word is (without the *): [ANCHOR*="any term"]'anchor'[/anchor]
This is the [anchor="any term"]'anchor'[/anchor]
Please note that when you click the anchor link it takes you to the anchor. Through trial and error we have determined...
> You can link to and anchor in another post of your own - as long as it's in the same thread
> You can link to an anchor in someone else's post - as long as it's in the same thread
> You can put anchors in signatures (although it's a useless and stupid exercise)
> If you and another user have the same anchors / anchor links in the same thread, both anchor links will go to the one posted earliest
To create an anchor in your post, simple use the new and buttons in the advanced post editor.
This system is very sensitive. You must have the exact same word/phrase with the same punctuation and capitolization or it wont work! Please also keep in mind that this new system is experimental and there may still be bugs.
IF THERE ARE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE POST THEM IN AN ORDERLY AND CALM FASHION. ONE POST PER ISSUE. I WILL RESPOND ASAP.
This is false. I just tested it and it worked fine. The anchoring only exists within the same page as far as I know. So putting it in a sig would be pointless. You can always reference a link to a post if necessary.
edit: "If you and another have the same anchor and anchor links, they will carry users to the one posted by you - not the other person's"
We did confirm this is false. The anchors and links are NOT dependent on the user. It prioritizes them from top to bottom from what I could tell.

you are right. i mismatched the link / anchor. - only if ur in the same thread as the anchor is in when u click in sig.
I don't see why you think supplying feedback is spam posts but.. anyways
Does it have to reposition the screen so that when you click the anchor link, it puts the anchored text at the very top of the screen? Personally I put text as low as possible for easy reading.
Yes. There's no way around this within my knowledge.
The 'feedback' has mostly been "I don't understand this," which is fairly useless. Once the problem has been explained, I see no reason to keep a post around that is merely showcasing previous difficulties.
I understand how to anchor to a term or phrase within one of your own posts, but how do you anchor to a block of text in another person's post within a thread?
I can't get it to work...

Am I misunderstanding the meaning of that statement?
(quite possible -- I had a migraine yesterday, so I'm feelin' kinda stupid today)
I know how to link to a whole post, and how to
"move" the screen of person clicking to that specific post
but the post in which I'm attempting to create an anchor (which is in the same thread as my post from which I'd be anchor-linking) is a long-ass post, and I only want to link to part of it, which seemed to be a good use for an anchor.

you can, however, make a link to a certain post.

I forget how to "move" the screen of person clicking to that specific post, though.
D'oh! Really?
But it says...
