As a long time Lurker (yeah i still have teh Iphone app, and have had it for ages) ive recently joined this site because several threads ive read have made me want to reply and ask questions. If i get beta or not is not my aim, my aim is to be an active part of a d3 community and take in what others have to say about my prefered class (The WD).
I understand the long term members see this current situation for what it is, ive been in a simular situation on a different forum we got through it and we found a good percentage of the influx members stayed and some were very valued members of the community because they joined to win a contest and stayed and contributed because they found plenty of like minded people.
When all the beta keys have dried up that will sort out the wheat from the chaff.

Super Cop! He knows where you live, he knows where you sleep.
The Proposed plan of action would not keep key whores from getting keys. That is NOT the purpose of the idea. The purpose of the idea is to keep the site from having 5,000 threads of the same damn topic. You and every other key whore can still whore yourselves out to get your keys.
So you wouldn't prefer a few redundant threads over threads filled with dozens, if not hundreds of pointless messages that offer nothing more than a single line of nonconstructive, unintelligent and off topic text?
Its a lot easier to weed out duplicate threads than it is to weed through pages of off-topic posts IMO.
How serious is a new member going to take these forums if the first thing he's required to do is spam the shit out of topics that he has no interest in? What if he has, what he believes to be, a ground breaking and thought provoking idea and wants nothing more than to share it with the community?
Look, I'm no fan of how things have become since the forum contest took place, but lets face it, blocking the ability to create a new thread solely because someone is new, probably isn't going to work.
Heck, if someone creates a thread that happens to be redundant, out of place or just plain stupid, ignore it and move along, or better yet, report it. Oh, heres an idea! Reply with a constructive response that will help them on their merry little way instead of getting mad. Perhaps directing them where to go for the information they seek, instead of telling where to go, would help make this a much more enjoyable place to participate?
If its following threads that you guys have issues with, well, there's a solution for that too! Luckily the gods have blessed you with a "Follow this topic" button and have conveniently placed it within your reach.

This. The whole reason moderators exist is to handle these kinds of things, so report these threads and the issue is solved! This isn't likely going to be a long-term issue, anyway, so we don't need a long-term solution. Once the beta code giveaways are over, things should calm down again. It's just in the nature of increased traffic.

And when we have something else that causes a massive increase in traffic?
Wouldn't it be better to implement something now so people can get used to it then just say "It'll be over soon, don't worry" every time a massive influx of members comes along?
I mean, I know this isn't the best idea, but nobody else is giving any ideas. (And "dealing with it" isn't a solution. (Not saying that you are saying "deal with it", just saying the general mentality against the notion is that.) )
As for the reason the moderators are around response, I guess I am of the mindset that if you have a solution where you can make the site better, and instead choose not to implement it and instead rely on your volunteers then...that makes no sense... (Nothing against the moderators, or the admin for that matter, just saying that if you can make it so a problem just doesn't exist or exists less, then...why not?)
im going to lawl and leave this site once D3 is launched and the traffic is quadrupled or more and is riddled with a billion senseless posts and threads started by new scrubs playing D3 and this place becomes worse then the main forums. sad but true. unless they implement something to stop it

These massive increases in traffic are temporary. We won't have three thousand concurrent users on every day when we're not giving away free stuff, as much as Curse would like to say otherwise. Yes, on release, another spike will occur, and then it will drop dramatically with regular traffic increasing modestly.

The problem is that we don't have a real solution. We have a number of not-so-fantastic umbrella solutions so far that ultimately only reward current members because of post count. In the long run, I firmly believe that such a thing will only confuse new members and possibly send them other places to post their thoughts. I believe the best course of action is to utilize our moderators who actually enjoy doing this kind of thing or they wouldn't have volunteered. Human beings are the best judges of which messages should stay and which messages should go, and the interaction of a good moderator with a confused new member is likely to build a relationship and sense of belonging which will make the new member more likely to return.
If anything, after this spike subsides, maybe a new moderator or two could be added, or individual moderators could be assigned to individual forums, like on MMO-Champion. I think that works fairly well for them, all things considered.

I don't mean to be mean or nasty, but I do hope it calms down semi-permanently. :/
I mean, making a good news system for the masses would be great, but fifty thousand new members a day...not so cool...

Well, I don't mean to not utilize the moderators. I just mean that the people that have volunteered could be utilized in more useful fashions.
I am not denigrating the moderating team in any fashion. They are great. I just think that if a person is willingly offering their time, then the least we should do is utilize that precious resource to the best of our abilities. Know what I mean?

Well, I think an Off Topic moderator, a Diablo III General Discussion moderator or two, and a single General Discussion moderator would be great. Granted I'm now on the outside looking in so I don't know the views and opinions of the team anymore.
