"Yes, they moderate differently, and one is more aggressive than the other, and there may be disagreements here and there, but that is life, people."
You are just whining. Nobody ever gets banned randomly, nor gets infractions randomly. I hardly remember moderators anywhere that ban/infract people for no reason at all. There's always some reason. But, of course, you can't handle a little ban. You can call people carebears because they don't like to be PK'ed, you can call pepole noobs or non-hardcore gamers because they don't like the way DII is, but when it comes to not coming to a forum for a week and a half, you whine. And bans on this forum aren't even that long. You sometimes just have to deal with it, you know.
And, LinkX, that reason has nothing to do with government, religion, or other crap that you have hit into your head... you'd know better than to think any of the mods on this forum are into that stuff. The most you could say is that I was sexist, but I am not on the mod list anymore, even.
"Humans are bias. Thusly, Moderators are bias towards there view points. Bias moderators are bad moderators."
OK, let me just tell you what you have just said:
"Every moderator is human, thus every moderator will be biased, thus every moderator sucks."
Sry, that theory is not going to get you anywhere. Biased, power hungry moderators > Lax, pussy moderators > No moderators at all. That's my personal experience. I prefer to be banned for letting my typing out of control but see a nice, tidy forum, then be able to speak my mind while the forum is a total bedlam. Diablofans is somewhere in between. I said a ton of bad things on here and I am not anywhere near a ban... how people manage to ban themselves is beyond me.
Good King. Bad King. You judge too easily, Merlin.
Quote from "LinkX" »
In my closing statement of this post, I would like to say that I have the utmost respect for anyone who would honestly attempt such a job. I belive it to be the hardest thing on these forums, for it is the moderators that are on the front lines. However, as was said in an old comic, then again in an old movie, "With great power, comes great responsibility." Every moderator will have to make a decision, to sway to his/her human side and accept there bias, or to stand up, to be fair, to treat others the way they would like to be treated. ...I think I remember hearing that...in some book...
Thank you, Link.
But guys, try not to judge us too quickly. It is hard being a moderator, but we will get better in time. Saying that we aren't cool doesn't make us feel very good, and its especially hard for us since we are new at it (when I first became a mod someone gave me bad rep saying "he's a admin >.>" - thank you, whoever said that. You really made my day). Several factors attribute to our (or at least my) apparent 'power-trip' or 'uncoolness'. For some of us, this is our first time as moderators, and we were brought on board in the worst possible time. The announcement of DIII brought the forums to an extremely busy level as it was burned alive and drowned in flood. It was like throwing us in the deep end. I'm not complaining though, because thats precisely the reason why we were hired - because of the sudden urgency for more mods. So at a time like that, we really had to do our duty and follow the rules given to us as much as possible, while simultaneously learning the best way to enforce them.
Another reason for the apparent 'power-trip' (as Silver just said) is the fact that we are new are want to impress the others by doing the best job we can. I feel like I have relaxed a fair bit now, especially since the forums aren't busy anymore.
And another reason for our apparent 'uncoolness' could be because being a mod (especially in a time like this) is very stressing and I was getting so sick of everyone's "discussions". But now thats over I'm feeling a lot nicer lol (if I didn't seem nice before).
So yeah, I'm trying my best. Give us a bit more time before deciding who is a good mod and who isn't just yet.
Oh yeah, I'm not sure what my position is on the original post yet, but its something that will definitely be discussed in the next mod meeting.
Bah. I see TheWarden openly trolling, in front of Siaynoq, 2 times, and he didn't get a ban. Then Siaynoq leaves and the guy trolls again. This happens all over the place.
Right in front of me you say? When I wake up in the morning, usually first thing I do is go over all the reported posts, deal with them, then dispose of the reports. I haven't actually been reading what's in the threads lately. It's been too overwhelming. So many threads, so many new members to keep track of, some older members as well. It's even harder without them having avatars. When they had avatars, I could sort of keep tabs on them easier.
I seem to get more criticism though when I'm only half doing my job as opposed to not doing it at all. I know a mod or two that never does moderating period anymore. But naturally I get more noticed by scrubs like you because I'm at least trying. That hardly seems fair.
edit: Just browsing the people I've banned in the past couple weeks, there have been quite a few. But failing to publicly announce how many I ban, someone gets keen on soapboxing their shit all over me. I'm depressed. I'm gonna go sulk and play D2.
My criticism goes to anyone. I, alone, am able to read the whole entire DIII section every day and pretty effectively, although I am getting bored with it because there are just duplicates all over the place, but I even read those, they are funny sometimes. Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands and I am lazy. You may have jobs and other stuff besides your moderation.
But, damn. There is what, 10 of you? And you can't even read the forum? Divide it between yourselves, organize it. I get really annoyed at "we only check reported posts". I can't report everything. It asks me to wait a minute. I forget what I wanted to repost. My internet slows down when I was reposting something. I am not going to track everything down, because it's not really my job and I mildly care. But this way it makes me feel like I am a moderator. I don't report something, it's not going to get deleted. I felt this happen. I saw something for days, deleted exactly after I reported it. And that's with all those other people reporting out there. o.O
You can't just only read the reported posts... sometimes you can just visit the d3 section, see dupe threads, mark them down, click delete. No need to even read the threads. I find it funny reporting threads like that, writing "D-U-P-L-I-C-A-T-E" into the box because I am amused, and seeing 3 blue guys online, who are either reading hte report box or aren't doing anything at all.
And remember that guy in the art section we discussed? You took a very long time to ban him. I'd ban him the moment I saw all his posts. You're very nice to people, and hence you are not nice to those of us who have to read what people like that post.
"Humans are bias. Thusly, Moderators are bias towards there view points. Bias moderators are bad moderators."
OK, let me just tell you what you have just said:
"Every moderator is human, thus every moderator will be biased, thus every moderator sucks."
Stop being ignorant. One person can act and proceed with more bias than another. That's what was meant. We tried your form of power hungry moderation. No one liked it, no one wanted it. It didn't work, ok. So stop acting like moderators should be bullies. You were definitely one. If you didn't like someone, you'd moderate them harshly. You followed no rules or standards but your own. It was hectic. How something is moderated is dependent on what type of forum it is. We have 10 moderators now. As I said, it's not bad moderation, it's just poorly organized moderation. Because there is no real standard to moderation, everyone does it differently and really sporadic. Have one mod focus on duplicates. Have one focus on the threads themselves looking for spam. Have one moderator focus on disciplinary with members(pming them). I see the mods always whining how there is too many users, too many posts. Well every moderator should stop trying to moderate the entire forum. Focus on invidiual tasks. Delgate to 3 members to work on reporting things as much as possible. Have one moderator focus on the reports.
For instance - Phrozen had given me a temp ban about 2 months ago. He never pmed me about it. Never discussed it with me. Never warned me in the thread. The reason wasn't really even a valid one. I'm not saying he's a bad moderator. He's just not following a proper procedure of moderation. As I keep repeating, admins need to delegate better, make procedures and rules alot more clear for other mods. We all need to work like a stream of unity. /Cheesy ending.
Sry, that theory is not going to get you anywhere. Biased, power hungry moderators > Lax, pussy moderators > No moderators at all. That's my personal experience. There isn't 3 forms of moderation. It's not black and white like that. You can be a great moderation that enforces rules, yet not act biased or power hungry. You have to quit thinking that an asshole moderator is a good moderator. IT DOES NOT WORK ON THIS FORUM.
Insanity - trying the same thing over and over while expecting different results.
SpanishBard first... I'll use a different method of approach : "I disagree." "I disagree, you fucking idiot."
Or, "I disagree for this reason," without words like ignorant, whining following.
I can best put it this way - pretend you're debating 20 gang bangers in the worst neighborhood around your residence, and this neighborhood has police who don't give a shit.
Translation : Debate and disagree respectfully.
I could say "Fuck you" in preschool, I grew up in the inner city of Chicago, I knew how to look cool and embarass someone at the age of 6, no matter what age they were.
That shit isn't necessary to disagree.
I'm not interested in people trying to look cool, trying to stroke their ego, trying to get an "Oh, burn" on anyone or otherwise any stupid shit of that manner.
That's high school. This is a PC in the comforts of home.
Your homeboys ain't around, there's no females to impress.
The shit is in no way beneficial here.
A lot more would be discussed and at a very high participation level.
Rules need not be necessary.
Like I said - debate everyone on the forum as if they're a UFC fighter standing right behind you.
Have respect and common social sense of treating people with decency and positivity.
Pretend you're talking to your grandmother, or whoever you respect in your family.
Maybe your dad has forearms like a gorilla and you watch your mouth 'cause his temper is short fused.
"I disagree with the new art direction because I feel it takes too much of the atmosphere from Diablo II, and though I want a new Diablo instead of the same old thing, I don't want to lose that feeling, that memory."
Not "I disagree with the new art direction but there's fucking ponies, rainbows and Looney Toons running amuck," also known as being an immature child with an overdose of sarcasm and exaggeration, let alone lacking logic that rainbows are solar rays passing through water.
Let me know if I missed clarification on anything.
I'll spend 6 hours on explanations if it means improving the environment of this forum, and making life easier on the moderators as well.
Lastly, Moderators, the only problem is your roster. There's not enough of you.
Equinox mentioned that you all only seem to go through reported posts, and she is right

Seal - When typing long posts we all have coherent issues. However, wow, reading that was a maze. Going off on a 2 page example of the word “netiquette” was completely unnecessary. Just for clarification purposes, you don’t oppose arguments, you don’t oppose debates, but you oppose lack of netiquette? In other words, you don’t like flaming? This is what your post all comes down to right? You’re criticizing how moderators don’t appropriately uphold their rules against spam and flame. You would like a stricter and more enforced policy on it.
The policy on flaming is rather elaborate:
No flaming (including: racial/sexual/religious/medical slurs) "Flaming" basically means "insulting". So, posting something insulting directed at another member or group of members is a no-no. Insulting people based on their race or using racist words such as a derogatory term is not acceptable here. Insulting people based on their sexual preferences or using words such as "gay" or “lesbo” or "fag" (etc) as derogatory terms is not acceptable here. Insulting people or using derogatory terms based on religious beliefs is not acceptable here. Insulting people based on their medical problems, or using words such as "spaz" (etc) is not acceptable here. Insulting people or using derogatory terms based on their experience or wealth of knowledge or lack there of, such as noob or nub. If you see flame being posted, feel free to send a Moderator a PM with a link to the thread, do not however take it upon yourself to join that argument.
I disagree with a proposal to add more moderators. I think we have plenty. If anything, adding as many as we did was overkill. It’s not about how many moderators you have, but who the moderators are. I think a few were poor choices, I think a few were good choices. As I keep arguing over and over. It’s not the quantity of moderation; it’s the coordination to enforce rules.
I personally don't mind flame, I mind empty flames. If someone calls me a douche, but explains why I'm a douche. I'm all for listening. We could discuss our personal philosophies on healthy forums all day. But it takes the higher ups to really want to discuss it.

Well that kind of "reasoning" is just simply naive.
She believes tyranny is the best way to be a moderator.
There's a forum where everything I've stated exists.
But then again, most of the members are nearly 30 or older.
You know, respectful and socially educated in how to treat others.
Every page on every thread had at least 2 disagreements.
Everyone always learned something from them.
You take a guess whether acting like a fucking moron was necessary in those disagreements.
Most of the time, no one ended up agreeing, but after a while they end up understanding eachother's reasons behind their viewpoint and a little bit of who they are.
I think everyone on it, of about 10,000 members, are friends, or share mutual friends.
There's probably a total of 1,000 who don't like one another, but handle it respectfully and still manage to get along in a way.
If I was a moderator, you definitely wouldn't have a problem with me.
Your words imply you believe all of this shit-headedness is A-OK, whether you realize that or not, but you yourself act in no such way to this belief.
The guy on page 3 wouldn't last 15 seconds after posting.
Another thing you don't understand yet is that these people are those people you don't want in your games. There's always something they cause problems with.
I'd like very much a forum of people with a healthy attitude, that I can argue with one minute, but have a beer with once the argument is done, and have a fun game of Diablo III thereafter.
I don't need depraved shitheads who are on the PC because they can't adapt to society so they cause problems on something I pay money for.
In real life, you walk away. On the net, you make them walk away.
Simple as that.
They aren't needed here.
Whoever wants to pretend like they disagree with me, they can go for it.
Needless to say, no one wants a forum of shitheads they can't play Diablo III with on a Diablo III forum, because they're guaranteed to fuck something up and provoke you to make another game with a password on it.
As well, I don't need 100 instances of disrespect to be disagreed with and explained why.
I don't care if you're Bruce Lee, you don't disrespect people.
And a forum without disrespect is one that all people can enjoy.
Those that can't don't belong on it, just the same way they would be ostracized by people in public.
People don't like being mistreated, as they shouldn't be.

This is a video game forum though. As you stated - forum harmony can exist, except only if the demographics are that of an adult nature. This is a kiddie forum with a bunch of young generation gamers. What your asking is a bit difficult, or at least I think so.
When you say that guy on page 3, do you mean OTC?

I banned that guy and his trolling friend within 10 minutes of reading what he had wrote. I would've been even sooner except that I was trying to reason with him via PM. If I had banned him in under ten minutes, would you not have said I am very nice to people?
The hence means you reached some logical conclusion. But this statement isn't logical. You're saying I'm not nice to who? Just you? Because you're really only talking about yourself here. And I ban people whenever I am able to catch them breaking the rules. Whether it's a new member or an old one. I banned you once when you were breaking the rules. And I banned those two users that other day when they were as well. What's the difference?
