Starter Edition Available on Beta? (Fixed, you now need a beta key)
Many reports are coming in that people without beta are able to play! We can indeed report this this was true however battle.net is currently down. Check out this thread for more info. Some reports also say they could only play with other "Starter Edition" players. It looks like players without beta who logged in were greeted with the Starter Edition banner at the top right (thanks Sinke)
We will keep this updated as soon as the servers are back from maintenance and inform if this is still working! (However with the maintenance worded with "while we work to resolve an issue." There is a very good chance this was a bug.
It was Different to the beta in that you couldn't access the auction house or the Hardcore mode. but it still showed the "congratulations! you've just beaten the beta" message. as for who else you got to play with I have no idea...
They probably just allowed the starter trial version like 4 weeks too early
Except that it was using the beta client and wouldn't actually be the same game/characters when the game goes live. Or else we would all be able to get to level 13 before the game was even launched, lol.
yyyyyy O.o wtf? This blizzard blue post is not even logic they are talking about ETA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA) and then about diablo wtf it have not any sense. I think somebody from blizzard was on drugs on something when write this...
anyone else feel that Blizzard is still withholding a LOT of information about the game they are releasing in less than a month. This starter edition being one example

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...

If Blizzard didn't withhold any info, you can bet Boubouille would be out of a job.
so i guess we won't know if this beta access gift we've been given is still gonna be active after maintenance yet huh? I hope Blizz leaves it open, there's gonna be a lot of angry ppl complaining otherwise... it's like giving a 2 year old a candy bar and then taking it away, there's gonna be LOTS of crying

pretty sure that info was datamined a long time ago...Blizzard would intentionally keep quiet about this because they want as many impulse sales as possible...most likely after a week or so they'll enable and announce the starter edition for the people who didn't buy because they were on the fence
i am pretty worried about how blizzard support is gonna manage diablo 3 where i see mmo's that are gettin major content patches having 4x less maintenance time then this .....
hopefully they are just taking their sweet time because they have that luxury due to it being beta
they will get a ton of backlash if people suffer extended downtime when they go live because it would just add lots of fuel to the "NO LAN/offline" frustration.

I received TWO beta keys. Eat it and like it.

And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell. Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell...
