UPDATE - Servers have been reset, Waypoints have been cleared!

Beyond The Gate - Patch 14
Users have been posting all over about the post on the battle.net forums. It seems people have found a way though the locked gate, and are now able to see more of the game that is usally not included in the beta. There are reports however that this has already been hotfixed VIA a teleport, though this has not been confirmed. (Keep in mind, though finding bugs is okay, trying to exploit a known issue is not according to Blizzard) If you like seeing new areas of act one, check out this thread.

Diablo 3 Art Slides From GDC
GDC just ended yesterday but fear not. We rounded up some rather nice slides from one of Blizzard's presentations about the art of Diablo 3!

    Hey guys,
So as most of you know by now, we deployed a fix to our database that fixed this problem for just about everyone.
Since there are many other reasons why someone can not log into the Beta (wrong password, servers are down, bugs, etc) I am going to lock this thread. We are getting a lot of "still broken" posts they may not be about this specific issue.
If you still have issues logging into the game, I ask that you please make new posts as this major database issue should be resolved now.

    Cooldowns
I don't think its about balance, it think its about adding a system from world of warcraft
Yes, WoW invented cooldowns. Good job.

    but is it fun?
I don't think inherently waiting to use a skill is fun, but it certainly reinforces skill-based play as it's a restriction you have to plan around and use in tactical ways. Obviously resources are the other big limiter, but we like our resource systems to be able to be gamed a little, and if they can be gamed you're essentially opening the spam gates. That's fine for some abilities, but not for others. So the question really comes down to should we ensure every skill can be used back to back, or do we throw another limitation on their use so they can stay awesome?

Diablo II was a great game, but I don't think anyone can argue the combat model was really deep or engaging. People played because they wanted awesome characters, not because it felt really cool to spam blessed hammer millions of times and kite monsters around. For Diablo III we think we can have awesome characters and deep and engaging combat, and we're not going to get there by just copying the previous game. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

    Magic Find and Gold Find
Why would someone not be trying to build up their MF?

Also is there an expectation that you're going to be able to just stack MF/GF at the cost of offensive/defensive stats and be able to survive?

There's a lot of reasons why someone wouldn't be trying to build up their MF - just like there are a lot of reasons why they would be. No point trying to write you a large list of reasons, I'm sure everyone here can think of plenty.
No I actually can't think of any reason why someone would not want better item drops (ie MF). Since that's the point of the game, in what scenario are there people attempting to completely avoid getting more/better item drops?

Also, the MF solution as stands, encourages people to sacrifice magic find for killing speed so they can leach off of people who have invested in magic find.
So I'm building a set completely devoid of MF in the hopes that someone jumps in that's completely sacrificed their survivability to have enough MF to average out so that I both get a worthwhile amount of MF, but am also able to carry them? And I hope that it's a situation that occurs every game AND I'm clearly not interested in ever playing solo, but instead just jumping in multiplayer games praying some MF stacker arrives to make sure I can get better items.
It's a nonsense situation built out of the ether of WHAT IF! and not how people actually play games.

What about an organized team that games the system? Specialization usually trumps "jack of all trades" every time in games like this.
Having an organized group will always be more successful than random players. That really has nothing to do with any specific mechanics, though. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

level 15 requirement man wtf man
Yeah, I think we forgot to note that crafted items have had their levels adjusted. I'll see that it's added. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

    Hardcore?
You'll need to hit 10 with a new character to unlock hardcore. it's kind of a weird side effect of not wiping characters, but it's that 'ding' to 10 with a character that unlocks it. Was it a new character, or a Barbarian that was already level 9? As of right now, you need to level brand new characters to 10.Obviously this won't be a problem at launch because no one will have characters. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

As you can see in this screen shot, my Barbarian has significantly less than 30% damage reduction
As of right now, this number is not going to display in your stats. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

can already craft me stuff before ive done the quest? just started a new char. is this intended?
The Blacksmith and Jeweler are account-wide. You have them as soon as you unlock them once, even if you make new characters. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

Level 13 Demon Hunter leveled up before the newest patch: Strafe tooltip and skills page show 'Unlocked at Level 19'. Strafe is still in my #2 skillslot, and I can use it in battle.
Enjoy your bonus! Since we did not wipe characters, any skill that was on your action bar before you patched can be used even if you haven't unlocked it. It won't be usable as soon as you un-equip it. (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

I'm not going to give away my MF to people who will leech off my hard earned work to build a MF set just to give it all away to some leecher.
Why would someone not be trying to build up their MF? Also is there an expectation that you're going to be able to just stack MF/GF at the cost of offensive/defensive stats and be able to survive? (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

    Diablo 3 Authenticator
it's not really something that rises to the level of announcement.
Yes, there is a Diablo III -themed authenticator in the works. As with previous Blizzard titles, it is being prepared to go along with the release of the game, and we'll make sure to show off the artwork as soon as it's ready.

Different UI skins(SC, WC, and Diablo) for my IPhone authenticator would be WIN!
You know... that' a really good idea! (Blue Tracker/Official Forums)

I haven't received a beta, can you give me a totally honest/blunt answer. Is there a chance I will get before ship?
I can't comment on details of our beta key releases but we will release more, so if you are signed up that's the your best chance (Source)

Why changing the lvl req. for skills: for testing, or for polishing, or to silence the demanding of the release date? :)
we change skill levels for a variety of reasons all focused on polishing based on our playtests. (Source)

Do @Diablo 3 bosses reset if you 'whipe'?
    the major ones do. (Source)

So, will we be able to fly away from a major boss fight or will death will be inevitable if not ready (for HC) ?
once you are in a boss fight you are locked in. (Source)

Any news for the community on rough timings for a second wave of EU Opt in beta invites?
As a rule we don't hint at or provide info on potential opt-in waves. (Source)

Are monks going to have access to Wave of Light at level 12 at release like they do in beta right now?
The beta is exactly like the full game, it just stops at level 13. So, yes, unless we change it before then. :) (Source)

hey bash. Just to clear all these rumours: will you guys give us a early heads up when to watch the community site 4 release date?
    No. (Source)

Will matchmaking try to pair players of similar gear together?
similar skill ranking, which is affected by both play skill and gear. (Source)

Why spanish language not appear in beta? Is one of the most important language spoken in the world...
I guess the client isn't ready yet? We'll be supporting Spanish, of course. (Source)

No EU servers for diablo, so this will kinda sucks like WoW... big lag queues... etc
? There will be EU servers (and there are for WoW). We just don't have any beta hardware there. (Source)

Please dont say also no duels on release? I already wondered why there are not in the beta?
You can only duel in the arena... soooo... (Source)

PLEASE! Will D2 resets still be happening once D3 is live? I want to play both and I'm sure many do!
We don't plan to stop resetting the ladder. (Source)

Can holding back the arena affect the price of D3 produts?
And then we charge you for it later? Nah. It'll be a free patch. (Source)

Will #D3 be available to pre order in battlenet store or do I physically have to preorder it from another store?
    We'll have digital presales. (Source)

Can you tell us more about the Nephalem Valor? Visible, invisible stat? Achievement stat for every map, bosses or not?
We're working on gathering up details and writing up a nice post about it, since it's pretty cool. (Source)

Hey Bash, can you ask the dev guys to add a gameplay option to block white item pickups? My bags are always unintentionally full!
Yeah I think the /nopickup option from D2 is on a short list of options to add. (Source)

Whats the motivaition to farm diablo now? kill diablo so I can kill diablo faster? LOL U GUYS ARE CRAZY
we didn't cut PVP, we delayed it so we can get the game out sooner. PVP is still an important part of Diablo 3. (Source)

Hey man, just wanted to say I got the BETA a few days ago, I love your game to death. Just 1 Q, will there be class intros?
yes, each class has an intro in the 2D animated style that appears in the intro cinematic we released. (Source)

Hello sir, I'm just curious if you plan to balance PVP, last I recall it wasn't too important. But it seems different now--
it's always been our intent to balance it, just not to a hardcore e-sports level given build diversity. (Source)

Any chance you could shed some light on real names appearing in Beta vs Retail? Is it just a bug?
it's unintended and will be changed by release, assuming we're talking about the same issue. :) (Source)

Always wanted a genuinely hard but fun game. I truly think hardcore D3 will bring that. Any chance at RMAH on hardcore?
if there is a demand for it we'll consider it. (Source)

Many of us can't understand why you development team didn't have time to make a pvp system (in 4 or 5 years) , any answer?
Quality takes time. That's the best answer I can give in a tweet.(Source)

Feat of Strength for beating the game with an HC char before doing it with softcore char? Yes please?
We'll consider it. May not be able to get that in before release. (Source)

From the looks of the Diablo concepts, it just seems that maybe they decided to give him a more feminine look to do something different. Only time will tell if Diablo did take a girl for his host.

    Dunno if anyone missed but:

So did he mean 1v1 when saying "duel", if so that's awesome that they are planing to incorporate 1v1 duels :)
You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity.

Dang it why didn't someone grab the first post and the first response of that topic before it got deleted? Now this bit of twitter news is pointless.

Of course there will be demand for it! But more likely by those with a huge expendable income to keep dumping into new attempts. Blizzard knows and should continue to drill the point home that HC RMAH is not good for the player experience. HC is already luck based game thanks to uncontrollable factors like server lag, server-responsible d/cs, and ISP issues.

You're not alone. Thats how Diablo should look like.

Also, Azmodan looks more believable and in Diablo style in the second pic from the left in progression, thats a f***ing demon right there.

Yeah I understand. But what I mean is that they ban people around for their problems. It's a glitch and that's not a reason to get a ban. Everyone who would find a glitch would take the risk to use it and check it.

Here's a summary of the Art of Diablo 3 presentation:

Christian Lichtner talked about Blizzard's art process and ideals in Diablo 3. He stressed that the art has to support the game design, that it has to support the theme of the game, and that it has to pay homage to earlier Diablo games.

Actually a lot of his talk was really showing how important art serving gameplay is. He showed many screenshots of earlier versions of the game compared to current versions, and it was pretty striking. Often, the earlier versions looked fantastic by some measures. Like one showed a bridge that had great detail and just looked awesome. The quality of the art in the earlier screenshots looked on par with what other companies might ship and think was fine. But in every case, the more current version illustrated just how deep the problems were with the earlier ones. Each time, the newer screenshot made me realize just how many problems the earlier ones had, and how hard an art director's job is to *know* that. I mean you'd have to look at those old versions (which look good in many ways), realize the problems, visualize the solutions, and get everyone else working towards that.

The issues I'm talking about where almost all about readability. About the player knowing clearly what is what, and what is happening. Christian explained that they use three layers for art, the background, mid ground, and foreground. The newer screenshots showed how the backgrounds now all have the contrast turned down, and a painterly look to them. The player's character and the monsters are in the mid ground, and these models are intentionally more detailed than the background, have higher contrast, and have more lighting applied to them. This makes them really pop, and when you look at old screenshots in comparison, the characters were often camouflage way too much. High contrast backgrounds might look good when you are are admiring a background, but they really get in the way of telling wtf is happening.

The fore ground layer is used for the special effects from all your abilities. These are intentionally the most saturated and brightest, and the whole point is to make them really, really pop even way more than the characters. When you do moves, this is what makes them feel super awesome.

Another thing he mentioned is that Blizzard likes to do things that are archetypes or expected (such as having a "barbarian" class, and having the globes for health / mana on the HUD like before) but switching things up 20%, to throw you off a little and make it unique (the barbarian is actually an old guy). Also, Christian says "barb" when he means to say "barbarian" and I suspect this was weird and grating to almost the entire audience, considering he said it about 100 times.

He also showed extensive concept art progressions of how they get the heroes and monsters to look the way they want. While a lot of this made sense and showed them working towards a certain thing, the weirdest thing was about the monster Diablo himself. Christian showed a slide with Diablo's name (the monster, not the game logo) and an image of Diablo. This image was I think the most fantastically awesome of any illustration shown the entire time. Then he told us that was the Diablo 2 interpretation, and that they wanted some other thing for Diablo 3. Why? I have no idea. Then he showed a bunch of different takes on Diablo that all seemed worse, ending with some other version of him that was at least better than the previous concepts, but kind of no where near the first image shown. And that's the final Diablo 3 interpretation of him. Hmm ok. Source - http://www.sirlin.net/blog/2012/3/8/gdc-2012-day-2.html

    In this world...
Is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law?
Is it like the hand of god hovering above?
    At least, it is true...
That man has no control, even over his own will.
