It's not always redundant. Not in cases like this which make you facepalm. Logic, even in games full of magic and myth, still should be somewhat retained to avoid LOLWTF moments (a guy gets stabbed through the freaking face by Baraka and tossed halfway across the room but Liu Kang asks him if he's ok the moment he hits the ground. WTF? The guy is dead as shit Liu Kang!!)
I think it's still grim and gothic, don't mistake design choices with theme and art style. You have halved bodies, blood, torture chambers, organs hanging on hooks, monsters that have half their stomach sticking out. Not very kid friendly at all.
Yet this same logic you apply to WoW doesn't apply either, it was initially a story about war death and all that other glory stuff then as the game got more popular it became less grim and more childish. I'm hoping this fate doesn't apply to this series but until I play the full released game I'm not going to commit to an answer. Also for a grim game seems a bit colourful still
EDIT: Quoted wrong section for WoW statement, but meh.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
isnt this like the 4th thing they've taken out and will "add later" so they can release the game sooner? this makes me very happy. i expect D3 much sooner then before.
True dat! Really looking forward to that week before the conference call!

i suspect nothing will be announced before the call. and they will "reassure" investors that they are definitely on track to release before the summer. which is a lot better then everyone saying its not coming out till Q3+. then a release date announcement sometime in march

they used the word release 4 times in the new changes info. normally i think its dumb every time someone points at some obscure or coincidental evidence to feed their own delusions, but what this comment from blizz is saying overall, combined with their previous comments about taking out the mystic etc to not impede the release of the game, really gives me the feeling that we are close to hearing an actual date.
edit: also: "we’re trying to close in on a solid release date for the game" and "stay on track for the game’s release" even though they are somewhat opposing statements, the former meaning they are trying to pick a date, and the latter meaning they have already picked a date.
And I just hope they didn't scrap too much features...or they shouldn't have put in all this stuff to begin with?
oh well, more things to put into expansions...
If they're going to force us to play through normal to start a hardcore character, then the least they can do is allow us to convert the first character we make to hardcore once we finish it. I for one was going to start on hardcore on day one =/.
Feeling good about a release date announced early feb.
Don't people ever get tired of setting themselves up for disappointment?
we have to do it
we have to pretend that by typing a date it will magically be that date
we will go insane otherwise
ill go as far as to say i bet you 100k gold on release that we will get a release date announcement by march. all these systems they are omitting in order to "get a solid release date" as they keep saying just screams of an announcement in the next month or so at the latest. it is ONLY january and they dont HAVE to announce it 2 months in advance like people keep insisting.

But my main point was why they decided to remove the pets, who were working fine, just for their looks. As I said, why not just patch the looks later? I cant imagine removing the pets gained any time on their plans for the release, just seems a bit pointless to me, that is all.
Looks, no matter how trivial it/they seem, can surprisingly have a big effect on the game. I do not have the beta, but if Blizzard's post(s) are anything to go by, I wouldn't want utterly cutesy companions. It'd kind of ruin the mood.
Actually, thinking about that reminded me of this.
The current time. Is there a toggle 12h/24h
If not.. is there a toggle on/off then?
I never get the hang out of american clock/time.
I'm pretty sure it will be region based...since the west/east coast of US's time differs. It will be inconsiderate of them to just have US times...
As far as I can tell it shows your time.
I think it's a simple applet checking your pc clock and showing it, no more.
It's something best handled client side, I dare say.
I don't know if you can toglle on/off the clock, maybe they just added it to beta to test the feature and would add the toggle option later.

I'd check some beta feeds, because I wouldn't have called the pets cutsie by any means. There were snakes, spiders, bats, cockroaches, caterpillars on the 'darkest' side, and then small animals like pigs and chickens. I think there was a tiny bunny, and I could see removing that. But playing the beta, they in no way detracted from my experience. They weren't all bright and colorful (well the chicken was a dark gold, pretty cool). They were, however, realllllly useful, and imo made the gold pickup radius stat useless. Which I was ok with, i'd rather have the companions. W/e I'm still going to roll a DH and use my 2 ferrets to pick up gold. That's what's up =D

I'd do HC, but i know that battle.net will lag at a critical point and kill off my hard work.
It just makes it, not worth doing.
Perhaps a bunch of achievements might sweeten the deal.
