Portals Still In?

Blizz has said they are fine with rushing as long as it doesn't involve skipping content. So that seems to point to some kind of way of preventing lower level players from going to places they haven't been through TPs. It wouldn't be that hard to just not allow them to enter areas they haven't discovered on their own beforehand. Not to mention that quests will most likely be the most effective way to get xp and gear, so you won't really want to skip entire areas anyways.

I have a few points that came to mind regarding the tp's/pots etc.

Potions I feel are a slow regeneration mechanic that is useful in between battles, but too slow for when in the middle of a battle. In combat healing will be done by Orbs. That just seems like how it will work as of right now.

TP's are an interesting mechanic to toy with though. It seems to me that the major problem was that people would high-tail out of battle if it wasn't going well. to solve this they could make you face the boss (either by letting it chase you or confining you to the arena) and then have the TP be a channeled action. It does not need to be interrupted, although that was a good idea. :Thumbs Up: Imagine channeling a spell while fighting Durial. If you are not doing well already you will die before you make it home! This would certainly prevent people from escaping dire situations weather it was a boss battle or just a normal mob. Notably, this does not require a cool-down or arbitrary location restrictions. Add the 'only the caster' idea and it sounds like a great solution.

As for skipping content, I get the impression that they don't like it, but they are not fundamentally against it either. The way to reduce content skipping that I think they will go for is making the content both interesting and rewarding. Remember Bash posted that there was already a separate mechanic for joining allies in the field one-way so, even without TP's, rushing is possible.
If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...

mmm...I wonder...I'm playing and having fun...I meet a bunch of demons and just as I start fighting them someone knocks at the door while there is a storm outside and I've to answer....must I really choose between dying or letting the guy out? (guess the pal outside will get really soaked up, I'm not gonna die :xD: )

If waypoints are close by I may try to run for it but otherwise what shall I do?

Maybe if you use TP you won't be able to heal yourself and not stock on potions, just sell&repair.

agree 100%. There are a few things we need to think about in terms of balancing TP's. Single player and multiplayer games and translating TP's to be relevant for each. In the diablo 2 single player campaign, what was the role of the TP? Selling items and escaping combat, maybe hiring back your mercenary. In diablo 3, TP's will not need to function like this anymore if we are to believe they won't be usable in combat. I don't think escaping combat is necessarily a bad thing, but should not be instant.

As for being restricted to using TP's out of combat, I'm not sure when our character is ever technically out of combat. If TP's are serving a function that aligns itself with the universe, combat persists throughout the entire game. And I refuse to believe that our lovable game designers are trying to find a way to get us out of the action so that we can take a trip to town. No, channeling a portal sounds much more likely, and much more desirable. TP's actually help the game keep its hellishly fast pace.

It's safe to assume we are not going to have tomes for TP's. I just don't see them coming back. We're going to have to change our belief that TP's are scrolls. I'm almost certain they will not be.

Also I wanna give shout outs to the Diablo fight in D2 for attempting to solve the TP problem. If TP's are usable during boss fights, we need to see more of this.

Can we suffice to say that TPs have always been in the Diablo universe and that Blizzard does not want them to cheapen gameplay and will make sure however they implement it that it will work good? They know what the flaws were and they are pros at delivering fun games with good mechanics. ( On a side note I am glad they are back I mean it would just be weird lore wise . We'd have to listen to Deckard or some mystic briefly explain why no one uses portals any more(not that some wacked out reason wouldn't be easy to invent) it would be like taking away cars....well maybe planes ...I can't find a perfect example for our world but I think you get what I mean)
"Give a man a skill tree, and he will become a Fire Sorc. Give a man 6 skills to choose from, pulling from all three trees, and he becomes a Fire Sorc that likes to shoot lightning to manage the bigger crowds."

    Quote from K1RSCH

I think as long as you cant use the town portals in combat the mechanic should be fine.
If you are worried about rushing, blizzard should make some sort of exp restrictions.

Example: If a level 45 groups with a level 15, don't let the 15 get exp unless he is responsible for the majority of the damage on the kill.

This is just an example and might not work but I don't think that town portals should be responsible for fixing rushing.

Thats what I was thinking of too, if they just disable it on combat, it should be just fine.

Scroll of wealth? I don't like this setting.

Well crap. Looks like I'm in the minority again. :(

The truth is that I need the TPs back. With 2 demanding kids and a wife, I go through TPs like water! My afk time in town hanging with Cain is almost on par with the amount of time I actually get to play. Charsi and I have a thing going on - don't judge me!

It appears to me that the single biggest issue that people (and maybe Blizzard) have with TPs is that it makes the game considerably less challenging (be it through rushing, escaping death, boring a boss to death, etc.). While I don't think that people are going to argue that point much, I tried to envision a world where I couldn't bring up a TP.

"So I walk into town and Cain informs me that all of the hero's got suddenly lobotomized and can't recall how to create a portal back to town. As a barbarian; I grunt, scratch my ass, and move on. Running outside, I start hacking my way through demons very happily. 20 minutes later, I encounter a pack of 16 mobs with a boss that is lightning enhanced, stone skinned, and immune to physical JUST as the doorbell rings in real life. Remembering the epic conversation with Cain, I promptly bend over and take it like a man while answering the door irl. (Cursing Cain the whole time.)"

Granted lightning enhanced and the rest of the old D2 boss features may not be relevant in D3, I still admit that I'm not a fan of no TPs at all. Someone accurately indicated that it would be very difficult to explain on the lore side of things.

Seeing as the original context of the Diablo series was to be labeled a "Hack and Slash", I genuinely thought that the ability to mash a town portal was normal. However, I concede that Blizzard may wish to change direction and carve a new path. I just hope that they pull a rabbit out of the hat that will make everyone happy. :D

The TPs people are talking about being ok would still work fine for you. If you have to go AFK while in combat thats one thing, but you'll still (under what most people are saying would be ok) be able to go back to town any time you're not in combat. So you're not in the minority.
