I was on board forthright return of Baal and Mephisto but I have changed my mind. This is a new game and I want new enemies. Some familiarity is good and afterall, this is diablo so I want Diablo to return. However, the oher two would just be too much repitition of D2. Same reason I don't want the necro back and I hope that the act progression does not follow D2.
It's a good point that the potential for repetition is there, but then by that same logic, having a King Leoric fight would be repetition of the first game, the Diablo fight would inevitably draw comparisons to the other two Diablo fights... it's a slippery argument to try to make.
Plus, I want to point this out also... Mephisto and Baal haven't even been seen. I mean, not REALLY. Each of the Prime Evils, D included actually, took the form of a mortal host. The new graphics engine is a nice opportunity to showcase the Prime's true forms, and it would be a shame to pass it up.
I think building an entirely new fight, from scratch, on a whole new engine, is going to be refreshing enough and remove a lot of endless repetition by itself, without having to remove two HUGELY important characters. That just seems a bit excessive, to me. But then again, a lot of what I'm saying is kind of tarnished by my own opinions on the matter, so who knows?
I just hope Diablo still has his lightning inferno and fire wall

Having some bosses as "mini" bosses like King Leoric is great way to have old characters come back. I wouldn't mind seeing a few familiar faces. I am more worried about the three last bosses from D2 being the three bosses for D3. I know this is unlikely but I feel that there is no need to even have Baal and Mephisto come back as Diablo will be. Diablo is, after all, the star of the game.

Now, THAT I will definitely agree with. If we have the same three boss fights in the end game, in the same order, or the fights play the same way... THAT would definitely be a pretty cheap shot at the fans.
But personally, I think it really shouldn't be that hard to make old monsters play in new ways. In fact, since they're building them from scratch, they probably won't even have to try all that hard. The new engine will lend itself to new skills, new ways of play, all that jazz. My main point is that I definitely think there are ways to keep the game fresh without removing two such important characters.
That said, though, I do agree with you that the fights shouldn't go in the same order they did in D2, where you had Meph, D, and then finally Baal. Personally, I found it a little disconcerting that Baal was being presented as the final boss, because like you said, Diablo is the star, and also I always thought the Baal fight was way too easy. Even on Hell.
If anything, I'd like to see them come back just to see how much Blizzard could improve them, a la Barbarian. I kind of like the mix of D1 and D2 returning. For example, I'm holding a candlelight vigil over here for the Butcher's return, though I doubt they could replicate the gritty, pervading horror of that first fight with this new engine they have now. It'd still be good to see.
I don't think the butcher is going to be in the game... don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him again, specially if they can make it scary as the first time, but the butcher is a legend, and making him return may kill that legend...
I agree you dont want to kill the legend of the butcher (Even though they did bring him back in Warcraft3 TFT on the blood elf missions when you kill Magtheridon hes in a secret room accidently ran into him with my draeini I heard Ah fresh meat and then my guys were getting pwnt im like OH SHIT RUN!)

Agreed, new bosses with cool gameplay mechanics are preferred. Leoric looks different enough that he could be considered a new boss though, so I guess I'm ok with things like that. Or maybe a huge Tony Danza boss, cause that's who the real boss is...
though they don't reveal anything about A4, is it possible that we might get a chance to travel near High Heavens, or just somewhere near the Gates of Heaven?
since, Diablo is the major boss of the whole theme, he might be saved for an expansion... and by any other means, it would be good concept to observe Clash between Guardians of Heaven and Sieging Demons from hell... this also could be other way around...
as for the act 1 and 2 we most definitely will see lesser demons, maybe with some surprises from heaven forces too.
the only thing i assume is that we wont see all 3 major boss forces from hell because they have to save something for expansion.
also rumor about ULTIMATE fusion seems ridiculous imo (why wouldnt they fuse all from begining; GO POWER RANGERS!?)
I'd just like to say Diablo is not a boss. Inarius and Tyrael send him packing though Tyrael gets beaten too. You have to fight Inarius. He created sanctuary and in his imprisonment he decided it needed to be destroyed, perhaps due to a twisting or breaking of his mind.
