My thoughts exactly. Im not a big fan of followers either. In D2 it was hard to keep the useless suckers alive, or just make them sorta usefull without teleport. I dont mind having the system there if some people get a kick out of it, but I dont plan to use it
Haha, I really hated how far the mercs strayed in D2, If they stay closer to the player and don't just wander around aimlessly...
Running baals atm and my zons merc often likes to target the stupid tentacles rather than baal...
i believe, or at least i hope, blizz will make mercs cost a lot of gold by some way and with this make them something more end game like
so less ppl will have them (ends the problem with 8 ppl on screen) and ppl that jst don't want it can spend the gold at other gold sinks (ends the problem that some ppl don't like it but feel in disadvantage)
also hope that blizz make a great ai.. so my barb have a smart enchantress that keep distance and dont die all the time
Bashiok just posted this in the Diablo 3 forums. A lot of people are complaining about the followers and he posted this.
"I'd recommend everyone back down from their perceptions of what they believe is true, because tomorrow, from my perspective, everyone is going to be eating crow."
I'd recommend everyone back down from their perceptions of what they believe is true, because tomorrow, from my perspective, everyone is going to be eating crow.
There's no conceivable way the video is categorically fake (or would be; why fake this of all things if someone could fake something so perfectly?), but given no official context I think most people (at least on this forum) have been working with the idea that this could very well be outdated. I'm curious if tomorrow we see a Followers reveal with some cosmetic / mechanical polish not see in that particular video.
Edit: Bashiok's comment could perfectly also intend that people make assumptions about game balance and so on don't have any information to really judge the Follower system, which is ostensibly all I've been saying in this thread.
I believe Bashiok's quote just means people need to stop making assumptions because tomorrow they will officially release the video and some information to go along with it. The video was obviously leaked a day early and with no accompanying text to go with it people can only make guesses and assumptions.

I really doubt the video is old.
That's my assumption as well. I think they'll release some information that goes along with the info we received today.

Looks nice, though not gonna like I'm not a fan of the polygon count for the followers.. Call me picky.. I kinda hope the graphics where being run on mid settings for this video.
I thought the same thing, but I have to assume it was either an early build, or the settings were low. Anyway it was zoomed and sometimes slowed, so poly count is gonna get put under a microscope. I'm not worried about the graphics overall, but I AM continually wetting myself about how cool this video is.

The customization itself seems like it would alleviate a lot of these criticisms: if you don't enjoy that your Follower is killing a lot or whatever, it seems like you can tweak them / not gear them so they're not even remotely powerful except perhaps as a way to increase Magic Find or something (e.g., the Scoundrel's skills look to possibly work this way).
I say let's see more info / get more actual gameplay with the Followers and see what we can / cannot do with them (or do without them) before throwing feces at the entire system. I think this is natural, whenever there's any reveal like this there's a lot of knee-jerking going on, it's hard to remember we don't know much about this yet. I'm as guilty of this as anyone, just saying.
Agreed. The Follower system is not going to break your D3 experience. Obviously what we know about this system thus far, gives you the chance to let your Follower take the lead, or sit in the back of your ride. I have a sneaking suspicion that most who hate the system, will come to appreciate it.
Lets wait to see what Blizz has to say about it tomorrow.
i just have one question: will followers be romance-able?? lol either way i would be fine without this, but i think it would be cool, story-wise
I'm afraid this only happens in Dragon Age and The Witcher
Story telling is supposed to be more than in the previous games, but nothing like those games where you can simply stand by the campfire talk with your NPC friends for hours. It's all about the monster slaying and looting.
Let's just pray that the graphics we saw today in the Follower Video is not like anything what the actual game is.
Because I'm extremely worried that no matter how good the game play might be.... you still can't have shitty graphic like that we saw today in 21st century gaming industry.
There are millions of non-hardcore players who've never played diablo 2 in their life time. And for them, Diablo 3 may look very dull and less attractive...
This is being debated to death already all over the forums (here, Bnet, etc.) and it seems so naive. This was the game in god knows what build / state of polish, at who knows what graphic settings, at a zoomed-in perspective that D3 is not meant to be viewed in much less played in.
Like SC2, D3 will be scalable to run on a very wide variety of systems, it can look I'm sure either terrible or glorious, your hardware will be the deciding factor.
That said, D3 is not the game anyone will be using to show off their hardware e-peen, and that's a good thing.

Too bad I'll probably never use them.
I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence

Interesting that you say that because you're mostly right. I find the folks over there to be a lot less mature than the folks here.
Yes they do, I basically reserve judgement until some actual concrete information is released vs the video.
People are very quick to call doom.
I wonder what Bashi means, if they've changed, at least we'll get to see how?
