Ahh, memory lane. Thanks for the trip Kris ;). We old timers are a dying breed. There's only a handful that still post, but a lot of them still lurk.I see you hiding! Come out of those shadows dammit!
Wow, I guess I might just be considered one of the old timers now. Reading that did bring back some good 'ol memories. All those big names, Umaro, Silver, Darkjay, MedievilDragon, Muttonchops, FingolfinGR, Thas, Carloseus, Ullion, Mag (Seth), etc. And I always wondered what happened to Anakyn, he just changed names.
And the old rumor mill that used to be going around. For a while there, it seemed like everybody knew someone working for Blizz, lol.
So is there anyway somebody dig up that exclusive interview? I mean lets all put our differences aside. "All ya need is love"
well that's all well and truly nice but I really don't think anyone cares about the drama and inner workings of what goes on behind the scenes of a diablo fan web site, in future just please report on diablo 3 news.
The rest of this thread would beg to differ. But you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

I feel kinda sad atm... This is like big business shutting the little ones down... In the good ol' days diablofans.com was even advertised by Blizzard in d3.com.
That was only because this site had been handed over. It was a temporary thank you from Blizzard and was never meant to be permanent. So it's no fault of the "new" Dfans that the link is gone.
Quote from "blizzu" »
And btw, if this site is owned by Curse, why aren't we in their list of community sites in the footer?
Because you're here. That's like having a street sign point you to the city you're already in

Not cool.
Its sad that Curse did what they have done, even though I have no right to utter myself regarding that matter, I still shed a tear.
Seems like some people are taking this post as a cry for the past to return. That's not my intention, you should all know we can't do anything about what has already happened, all one should do is look ahead

Let me tell you what is happening, both good and bad, in my opinion. What Curse has brought to us is the help the staff has been desperately begging for for years- active, able administration personnel that can deal with technical issues that we haven't been able to deal with before.
Yes. That's something which I didn't mention in this post; how many times before the curse era that we of the staff wanted to do something, but never could.
"Hey can we get this feature? No, no one can make it."
"Hey, can we get this function? No, no one can program it."
After Curse, we got a wiki, a new site design (which Jetrall did also provide us with before then), the blizz tracker, blogs and other stuff in the future
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

I miss mockery. The list said he was "removed". I don't think it was voluntary.
Yes, but I'm also assuming it was him that gave (probably sold?) the site to Curse. Don't quote me on that or anything but I'm just inferring that from the post. If he hadn't done that he never would've gotten removed and everything would've stayed the same. That's what I meant, I don't get why he handed it over or whatever to them in the first place. Now we have a cookie cutter design that falls in with their other sites and upper level leadership that wasn't even around during the sites creation or high time in activity. It's not really an insult to the new owners because I'm sure they're all good people, but it's just weird, different, and not "homely" like it was. (and in case anyone's wondering based on my join date, I had a different account on here that was registered in 06)
Well we'd sure like it to be homely. There's always mixed feelings regarding a "big brother" network getting involved with a smaller fansite. The truth of the matter is fansites are expensive. I'm a gamer, my loyalties lie with the community and the games that I'm a fan of, if I ever felt something was wrong or a community was getting shafted I'd be the FIRST to step up with a big old w t somethin'.
The fact is Curse's been footing the server bill and staffing the website now for a long time. They've also spent lots of development hours and dollars on making sure the site can compete with other fansites, and in terms of community it's their #1 goal to make the site as friendly, as "homely", and as informative as possible.
There's really nothing lost by Curse involvement, and the benefits are astounding. The people put in place to work on the community are 100% tuned-in to the game (I've played 15 hours of D2 this week and it's only Friday, and Sixen's a bigger newb than I am), so it's important to me, on a personal level, that changes and additions are seen for what they really are; trying to put the best people in place for the community and the success of the fansite. This includes getting the right guides, news, and information up on the website in a timely fashion by the most passionate people possible.
I think Phrozen didn't do as good of a job explaining some of the staff losses as he could have. Most of the recent step downs were admins leaving of their own free will, and in the case of the real losses, Seth for example, it had nothing to do with Curse, and I consider me and Seth pretty good friends - he just said, as cited by his post in the mod forum, that he's just too busy to be giving the site the attention it deserves. So the timing might make it look like something else is going on, but for the most part it's business as usual, but with more plans of enhancement and more focus on the community, than ever before

I like how you tried to just shove that in there somewhere, QQ...
Omg we should get a timeline like the one on the D3 site, that would be kickass. Hhm maybe with pictures of the Diablo games and stuff to show time of publishing and whatnot.

I honestly don't give a shit if Curse owns this site, or if Homer Simpson owns this site. The only thing I care about, is what the owner is doing. I'm not a really old member on this site, but I've grown accustomed to several members around. That being said, I'm feeling less and less comfortable due to the fact that members are leaving very often. Not just any members, but members I actually like posting with.
No offense, but several existing members are just "meh" at best. The number of worthy, fun, active, intelligent, articulate members is diminishing by the day. From what I understood, several policies put forth by Curse cause several people to resign, and some to leave the site entirely. Now I hate to be a drama queen and post a goodbye thread and all, but this actually sucks really badly. Not only are great members leaving, but the management don't seem to give a shit.
I like this site. Believe me, I do; but if some shit doesn't change, I really don't see a really nice future. By future I mean a forum that still maintains a decent number of good, solid posters (which - as I explained - is becoming a rarity around here) and is just full of guests and 1-post wonders who just fly by the site.
Look at the Midway forums. The exact same thing happened there. Bad administration which lead to a fucking atrocious user-base. I was perma-banned there for calling the administrator a bitch on a different forum. This is an example of bad policy. Soon, every good member was perma-banned, and another forum was created by all these users, and it was - and still is - very successful, leaving Midway with shitty members, and shitty everything.
I don't want such a thing to happen to Dfans. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I had to let some of this stuff out.
Good post PD, could have used a bit more Mephisto's Lament, but it's all good. It's pretty informative.
Don't know if I'd be considered an "old timer" or not. I certainly don't post as much as most. I do remember a lot of that stuff and a lot of those members though. Waiting for the WWI in Korea, hoping by some thin shred of hope that D3 would be announced, the speculation behind the countdown, the final announcement of D3 (staying up till 5am to watch it). All good memories.
I admit too, it is sad to see a lot of those members go, even if I didn't really know them personally; I felt like I knew a lot of them through their posts. Awesome post though Phrozen, was a fun and nostalgic read. Thanks.
And a big Welcome to all the new mods and admins...I'm sure this fansite will only get better.
This is just a wait and see type of thing, I think Sixen and DoranM could turn out to be some great contributors to the site. I'm sure everyone that has strong ties to this site will return once the game is released. So be patient.
Well most likely were going to get another huge influx of new people, and then when all the rage over the game cools down, the majority of the new people will just leave.

Does anyone still have the old site banner? The one with the rock and sand. "Diablo 3" on it.
