Since June 29, 2009, the mystical and enigmatic "chat gem" of the Diablo II online interface as confused and intrigued players with its multifaceted, color-changing depths and infrequent alternative messages displayed when clicked. Every couple hundred or so clicks, it will display an odd message, "Perfect Gem Activated":
So far, how ever, no authoritative and reliable link has been drawn between this strange object and the Diablo II experience, although the mystery has continued. Theories have spread in the past decade about it increasing things such as Magic Find, gem drops, rune drops, experience, and others besides, with all manner of incredulous facts and figures being thrown about.
Even to this day the Blizzard team has decided that this oddity would remain with the franchise, puting it in to the Diablo III official website. But what does it do? Players and fans alike have asked it of Blizzard repeatedly over the years, but the answer has always been just as non-informative and nebulous.
Official Blizzard Quote:
While I cannot divulge the true purpose of the gem, I can say that it is working as intended.
Could this statement by Bashiok mean that this will continue with the Diablo III online client? Do you think it will do anything more or less than it already has, which no one is able to figure out? Could this be a strange and twisted conspiracy by Blizzard to see how many times players would waste a click on a useless object?
Wasting people's time. Telling Blizzard how much fans are ready to speculate on the slightest mysterious things they do.
I don't know why people will forever be asking themselves "WHAT DOES IT DO". So I guess its just funny to look at everyone talking about this mystery that is not so much of a mystery in my eyes
I hate that gem so much D:
I think if I could get the answer to any question in the world, I would get the answer to "What does the Gem do" rather than "What is the meaning of life?"
Benjamin Boos (former artist for Diablo II team) has shared his insight on the original ChatGem function for Diablo II. Whether this will continue to be the case or not in Diablo III remains to be seen.

Max Schaefer and I were sitting around kidding about it - that it looked like a button... so I made it clickable, as a joke to drive people crazy. I think a programmer added a little mischief to it. I forget what it does, or says, when you click it long enough, but something happens.
Because of the nature of the site I probably shouldn't link to it directly here. But it was actually him and he posted on his blog site (http://benjaminboos.blogspot.com/) to ensure the forum moderators of his legitimacy.
This is a psicological experiment. They are tracking how many times people will click it and whats people's reaction when they see the different mensage.
Blizzard do this all the time. This way they can have a accurate psicological info about their fan base. This info is taken in consideration when they creat stuff to addict us (games).
I've always believed the Diablo gem is an inside joke that the developers have continued to chuckle over for years. I really don't think it does anything and I hope it stays that way with Diablo 3
Oh, probably. One of these days they'll tell us. I mean, they've said that this will conclude the storyline, so at least within the next... oh... five years?

it does do something. it keeps us interested and guessing. blizzard loves to mess with it's gamers, this could be the joke. the fact that we are all speculating over it.
Well lest not get into such topics over a thread about a gem in a game.. lol
The meaning of life is a lot more then to succeed.. its to pass on your legacy or wisdom to others imo. AT LEAST until Diablo III comes out, then who knows
The gem does nothing and all its purpose is for is wasting time and saying it is activated. Blizzard reps have stated these facts countless times in the past.
The perfect gem activated has always been there since 1.01.
LOL, I know it doesn't do anything other than the message and color but I still click it anyway once in a while. And like Bashiok said, it's working as intended
