Woo, that cinematic was crazily cliched and surprisingly poor quality for Blizzard. Well whatever, promo cinematics don't really matter in the long run.
The monk looks like a fun enough class to play with his fast attacks but I really was hoping Blizzard would turn more to Diablo's roots and introduce characters with a more Medieval Western European history about them. I'm kind of getting tired of all these exotic characters.
I'm not sure what my full opinion on this class is yet since it's too early really to tell. My initial impression was that I found it a bit of a tired character type and that it didn't really interest me. I was also hoping when I read the title Monk that Blizzard would make a twist on the character type and make a European inspired monk as opposed to the typical Asian one that's been propping up around games a lot. Would have been nice to see the typically placid monks of the West going all Knights Templar on those demons. One can dream I guess.
We'll see how this class turns out as time goes by. Maybe there's more to him than the cliched.
I'm gonna guess a generic "Ranger" class because we've already had Rogue/Amazon/Druid and they need a ranged fighter and a nature-magic user, and "Ranger" covers both of those. Actually, I have a theory they're gonna have 6 classes in the game because at this point the game is mostly likely not coming out until 2011, which gives them more time, and I'm sure they have too many ideas to fit into 5 classes.
They are probably going to have 7 classes, like last time, with two being part of the expansion.
There's no reason for the monk to not be the range character.

I agree, the cinematic was really disappointing. So was the lore of the character in the official D3 website.
The gameplay looks great though. I'm a bit skeptical about that red explosion, but the combo concept seems really fun.
I liked the voice acting and the whole idea, but yeah... letdown otherwise, I felt the same way about the wizard trailer to be honest. I was expecting lazers and shit to fly out of her armpits but no go

Leonard Boyarsky tried his best on the the panel to explain the monk background in Sanctuary. You should check out the clips posted on youtube for info.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
They can't give you the best freaking cinematic 1 1/2 before the game's release! I mean, they could have wasted I don't know how many hours into a "worthless" cinematic... instead of working on the damn game The cinematic was made using in game engine and I liked how they instored deception into the whole plot. I also really liked the monk's voice, it was a monk classic ^_^. As for the exotic taste of most of the classes... who cares? And they aren't completely out of place either, witch doctor = act 3 jungles, barb = mont arreat, the rest I didn't read the story so...
Point is they don't NEED to give me a cinematic, it's just 4 heating things up, made to be shown on a game convention but I'm used to all these great animated cinematics from Blizzard.

Agreed, the "in-game" graphics cinematics always look like shit, I reckon Blizzard are better off not showing them and just showing the actual gameplay.

Great points, I really do think a medieval monk from the west would be very cool..this one's not as tried as you would think though.. but yea a medieval monk from the west.. damn that would own..

i was really disappointed when i heard the 4th class was a monk, however it's by far the most fun to play based on the blizzcon demo.
i was hoping for an assassin-like class and the monk is slightly assassinish in the playstyle. one skill reminds me a lot of dragon flight and another a lot like cloak of shadows.(i can't read back through the post to see if they've been discussed because i'm on a terrible net - but i'll catch up later)
the way the combos/chaining skills work is very fun also.
each skill of the demo has 3 variations so that if you're on stage one, or stage two, or stage three they do different things.
i wish the chain level/stage you were on was visible somewhere though.
right now i think you just have to know based on timing (like if more than .6 sec passes then you're back to stage 1 then count from there)
but anyway the monk is more fun to play than any of the others, for me at least.

I feared it wouldn't be.
It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

He could fill the holy/range part just fine.

This is so fucking awesome!
I love the borderlands as well.

RIP: Demon Hunter: lvl 50 | Barb: lvl 60 (plvl 5) | Monk: lvl12 & lvl70 (plvl 200)
Although i have no idea which class i'd play first yet...
I really hope so.
That would be so hot.
Not necessarily, but it would be sweet. Or even better, balding, as in with a rim of hair around her head. Oh yeahhhh.
hm
:/
I agree, they always are. It's completely inevitable.
*sigh*
I just have to accept that I won't be able to play d3 as a bearded woman.
