This has been on my mind ever since they announced D3 at WWI. i like the new idea of orbs. I like something new anyways. anyone remember the old healling scrolls in diablo 1. i think that they should bring back something else then just orbs to heal. we all kno life tap is a fine example. But in diablo theirs always more ways to gain life/mana back so i wound't worry to much. I have faith that they are working on this as we speak.
i'm just afraid that they don't make it like u need another player to help your caster get through the game. The game should be solo able with any char! i would rather have to change skills then rather have a extra player to be with me. or better yet change gear to cast charges from certain classes like in diablo 2. it wouldn't matter to me about cross casting skills. i always like cross class skills it makes it more enjoyable for those who mastered the game so they have a chance to play with the mechanics and show off.
I don't mind going with something new but make sure it works thats the important thing. Sure pots are a simple way to solve that problem but thats not skill come on.
Scrolls at least have to be casted which can cancel the spell.:D
Orbs have to be obtained which makes u have to move to it.:D
ect..

god i love it how OPINION THREADS, notice the bold/caped words there, yes its an opinion thread just like all the others, turns into a flame wars because other people either dont like what they are reading or cant handle the ideas/ thoughts of other people.
Globes although a good idea in its own mind set, is also rather silly if potions arnt in it such as a mana potion, but from what ive read potions are still in it, now as one other person who started to try i repeat try and flame me for my thoughts about mana globes said.

if blizzard saw it as a problem they would go back to potion spamming, but I for one am glad I can focus on hitting left and right mouse button w/o tapping 1 2 3 4
if you are a sorc you shouldn't be in the middle of people, you should be behind the barb that is tanking
it isn't going to be a grindfest where you just tap buttons and move on
you are going to have to use strats so that you aren't low on health and mana
and if you get to the point where you are low, get better at the game noob.
Hmmm have you played it? if so please tell us what its like O master of the diablo 3 forums, listen mate some of what u said yeah sorc arnt ment for close combat well NO Shit, but as another kind person stated what if you are playing alone with no help and your merc dies you run out of mana with no where to go, no mana globe drops and no mana potions exists(example), your rightfully screwed there my friend, its the same if your magic finding alone.
So please and i repeat please think things through before you post crap like that.
Okay the concept is not bad for the idea in general on health globes. But the name "health globes" has to go. The visual "floating red orb" has to go. Better name and a better visual to go with the name please I beg you. It is so... how can I describe it. Its like eating pizza at a bad middle school or high school, it tastes like cardboard. That's how I feel about the Name and visual aspect of these red floating health globes... only way I can describe it. It's just so... cookie cutter?
As for the concept in general it sounds better than spamming pots and promotes team gameplay. They said that the orbs will heal everyone in your party so that promotes team gameplay so people can stick together instead of running off all over the place in confused mayhem. Not only that but it brings challenging PvE gameplay to the mix. they have. The entire idea behind this is its just a big promotion for team gameplay and thats a big  for me. But as i've said in blue writing at the top, what they have now just doesn't do it for me. Cardboard cookie cutter... yea, that just aint my slice of pie.

If you get personally attacked by letters through the internet its a good thing to always have a box of tissues and a band-aid around.
I think Bashiok makes a very well-formulated response here. The gaming market isn't the same as it was 8 years ago, and things change. Yes, empires fall, but most often they do so because they refuse to change their ways and accept that the world isn't static.
That being said, the system may very well not work out at all. But I believe it has good potential, especially if it can remove the massive dependency on potions you had in D2.

The point is: In D2, everyone was always spamming pots.
To be able to raise the difficulty of the game the monsters you met HAD to kill you in one or two shots (or iron maiden or whatever) or your pot-factory would bring you instantly back to full health within a sec.
With less pot-spamming, they don't have to make the monsters as strong to make the game equally challenging.
Instead of having to insta-kill you , they can make you suffer, but still have a possibility of reacting and make a great comeback.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I join a server, and everyone agrees no pots in PvP. So, I hostile some noob, I run out and try to gank him. I get him down to 5%. He runs over a red orb.
"Oh, sorry, I just 'accidently' ran over a floating red orb. I swear, it wasn't on purpose!"
Did he accidently run over the red orb? Or did he do it on purpose? Atleast with potions, I knew whether he was purposely cheating or not. Now, he can just run over one and plausibly deny it.
Yeah but you need to actually kill monsters to get health globes, so if there's no monster then no health globes, oh and potions are still in game so it still an option.
Besides I think there could be easily a lot of improvement for pvp, specific place to fight like arenas, options like activating/deactivating items, etc.

You try to GANK someone a lower level and you consider it HIM cheating?
PKers will never cease to amuse me.
If you can't even GANK a NOOB then lol at you good sir.
Like Kenzai said I doubt there is going to be orbs laying around right outside of the town too much. Also arenas etc etc.
but I for one am glad I can focus on hitting left and right mouse button w/o tapping 1 2 3 4
I'm sorry, but are people's minds really that small these days? That they can only focus on hitting 2 buttons with one hand and not have enough concentration to use the other hand?...
Every day it seems more and more people are complaining about stuff not being 'realistic'. Maybe we need a new definition of the word? Just because its not realistic doesn't make it a bad thing. The more realistic video games get, the more boring they get. We dont need more realism, I got mine right outside my door.
Regarding health globes, i think that the Devs are too influenced by GoW. Diablo 3 =/= GoW. They need some more creativeness.
i dont play a game to have it be realistic, i want it to be as unrealistic as possible. everyones solution to everything is make it optional.... health globes, make them optional..... new inventory make it optional

DIABLO = DEVIL its not supposed to be a nice game autostats are rediclous lack of pots is not welcome if it aint broke dont fix it! (diablo2)
There may be red globes floating around that heal you as long as you have an explanation that makes it immersive. Like "using the energy of the demons spirit" or something fancy like that. (I know my example sucks.)
doesn't suck at all
anyone remember omnishu or w/e the azn game name is... they used the souls of demons for powering up and etc too
what does suck is you trying to "prove" that there are azns in diablo...
there is no 'zomg azns do not exist' argument for diablo...
also armor and weapons do not reflect an influence, the game simply has weapons and armor that were made in ancient asia, just like they have gothic armor, arab armor, etc
influence comes from the overall feel of the game, so you would be better off showing the prime evils to say there is an Asian influence, because evil overlords who want to rape all freedom from the innocent are VERY Asian

Also there may be a red fluid in a little bottle that heals you with magical powers but if you press a button and without even an animation, your character drinks it instantly, thats ridiculous.
(Get what i mean? You press the button 5 times in a row and the character doesnt even have to move to drink those 5 bottles, he just instantly does...)
I don't believe every gameplay mechanic needs a lore behind it for immersion.
Example: LoZ:any game, hearts. As for the potion drinking problem, Diablo is primarly a hack-and-slash game. If you implement an animation for drinking potions, how would you do it? Would your character run and drink the potion, or stop and drink while disabling your movement, like in WoW where it required your character to be sitting? If you are allowed to move a drink the potion thus starting the animation and you attacked, would you cancel the drinking animation and cancel the potion effect? Vice versa for being attacked. It would just stop the flow of action and pace of the game overall.
- The same potion you would have used to refill your health after a fight -
EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING - one less potion
Over time the constant health replenishment of health globes saves you time from going to town. During a boss fight you are not going to see a bunch of health globes unless there are waves of smaller enemies that are coded to drop them.
I'm assuming in harder difficulties you will see less health globes...
So all in all, health globes are potions you didn't have to click to pick up and push to use..
It doesn't matter if it's a symbol. It's a gameplay mechanic whereby if you touch a heart it heals you. Where do the hearts come from? How come when I cut shrubs hearts pop out? Don't you want lore that explains where the hearts come from?
I don't get where you are trying to go with your second answer.
I love how the red globes got to complainers as well. Firstly, from my point of view, D3 will be taking the action up a notch and changing the way in which the game challenges us. So instead of spamming potions or simply running away from enemies and dying every now and then as part of the challenge of the game, we now get to keep slashing through them and we have to instead think fast and use out abilities properly in order to overcome the challenge. It sounds like new, fresh gameplay to me while still being diablo.
Realistic? Immersive? These terms are being completely misused by people. Floating red globes work for me. It's a game. The globes don't take you out of the world they've created. They aren't over the top nonsense. In fact, many of us have grown up with health like this in other games.
Is leaving the globes out going to make the game more "immersive"? I don't think so. Realism is not cruise control for more immersive. That is something that pro game designers know.
Thanks for clearing it up. I had a vague understanding of what you were trying to say before, but now I know. What I'm trying to say is that the Diablo series have always been a hack and slash genre. If you add potions with some sort of limit while using them such as an animation where you are not allowed to move, attack, etc, it ruins the pace of the gameplay. I know Blizzard is contemplating on whether they want to add a cooldown duration on the usage of potions or not, but I feel if you add an animation it will disrupt the fluidity of battles because you have to sit down and drink or rendering the player character unable to attack oncoming monsters because you are in the 'drinking potion' animation, it would break the pace of action. This scenario would be when engaging difficult mobs where you can't 1shot them and hoping a health globe drops.
I don't know about this title anymore. The longer I sit here reading the news and thinking about it, The less I look forward to playing it. I just feel like it will be so much different and not in a good way. I was so excited the day they announced it I couldn't get rid of my stiffy but now it seems the honeymoon is already over before there was a chance to acquaint myself. I can deal with the graphics, I can deal with the colorful environment, I can deal with new characters. I don't know maybe I just can't deal with all this negativity that follows Diablo 3. It's starting to turn me off. I can almost see myself just getting the game to beat it and check the story out then hopping back on D2. I may have to force myself to like it just to get through it.

Those orbs are fine for me, but i guess that putting coldown in the potions (like many games) would be better than creating the orbs.
At least we won't see many potters in the duels xD!!
