Diablo III Community Manager Bashiok offers more insight on the Loot mechanics. At the gameplay video panel the developers had mentioned that each player will have a random loot table that only each individual can see. However, there is a work around this when you don't want a specific loot, and wish your party to see the item. (Jump to Post)
Omnicide @ USEast: Say you pick up said item that only you can see and you don't need it. If you drop it, can your teammates then see it?
Bashiok: Yeah, so right now in a multiplayer game I'll see my items drop, if I don't want it or can't use it I'll need to pick it up and then drop it at which time everyone can see it. Then I can of course ask in chat if anyone wants it. It's fairly straight forward, and by no means final, obviously.
To clarify "can't use" we don't plan nor have any armor items at the moment that are class specific - although the bonuses and stats may be better suited to a certain class - anyone can pick up any chest/shoulder/leg/etc item and wear it. However, there are some weapons/off-hand items that are class specific.
Yeah, as others have said the current intent to encourage cooperative play (in regards to health globes) is to ensure that they heal everyone in the party when picked up.
But in any case, why wouldn't the witch doctor be using any of his abilities? Mass confuse, and while everything is busy wailing on each other or attacking your mongrels you sneak in. Or horrify, and while they're scattered you snag some health.
The witch doctor is a little sneakier though, a little more frail, a little more of a "I'm gonna make you die or kill your friend while I'm all the way over here". You should probably be doing everything you can to avoid being hit, and you have the tools to do so.
Q u o t e:
Bosses do not drop health globes while you are fighting them right?
Bashiok: Maybe? Maybe not. Maybe there are other situational/environmental mechanics that would, or would provide assistance in healing up?
Q u o t e:
Not only will they be forcing players to run in circles like mindless chickens, but they will make hardcore and softcore gameplay harder, slow paced, and over all less attractive.
Bashiok: That's a lot of conclusions to jump to in a single sentence. Classes will have abilities to help them work through groups of monsters. Obviously health globes are going to be necessary to pick up, and obviously class abilities will exist to help you do so.
And, come on :), I realize there's a lot of room for hyperbole since we just announced and a lot of details aren't out there or just don't exist, but at least have the ground before you call it a mountain. Rational concerns, complaints, issues, questions, are going to go over way better.
Q u o t e:
the fact remains that it only takes up space if it's added onto monster loot tables
Bashiok: Well, it's not like there's a hard cap on what a loot table can contain being forced upon us, or that health globes are even associated with loot drops. It can be balanced any way we see fit.
Bottom line, is that we're simply not going to release a game that is irritating, slow, aggravating, boring, or any of the other adjectives you used. If that means ripping out the health globe system and going a different direction, so be it, but at current it plays and feels fun and engaging. -- (Jump to post)
I liked it even before we knew that last bit of info (after your drops hit, you can pick then up and drop them at which they become visable to all).
So I guess in theory, if everyone just drops stuff they dont want, you can end up wityh loads of extra items. However, the bad part of that is basically if they see the drop and dont want it, its doubtful in the face pace game, they will take the time to pick it up and drop it. They will probably just look at it, and move on.
I have a feeling there will be a class that may have some healing abilities, or a mercenary with healing abilities. Most likely mercenary since they recently said there wont be a tank/healer class in this co-op gameplay.
Hopefully there will be a button modifier, so that if you hold a button and click on an item, it counts as picking up and dropping, so that you don't have to go into your inventory over and over
i like the fresh approach blizz has taken to the series, changing/updating where they can, although i wont initially play co-op, i can see that this is just the surface of the game mechanic, making it fun as SP, but even more tactical and strategic in MP! awesome move blizz.
Dungeon & Dragons Online use a similar kind of loot distribution, I cannot say that I was a fan of it though. Many times I would open a chest and see the items that everyone else was getting shaded white signifying I could not touch them and I saw a lot of good items go to greedy people who would just sell them. I admit it's a step up from the FFA cluster f*ck that ensued after any decent item dropped in D2, but I hope it will be subject to a fair amount of tweaking before the game's release.
Yeah it seems kind of annoying to have to open you inventory, pick something up, then drop it... maybe there should be a hotkey to hold over an item and click, then its visible to all. or at least a control that we can hotkey to our mouse or keyboard that will click on an item, run over to it, and pick it up and drop it without going into your inventory, saving a lot of time..
What about a timer? Say you have 45 seconds to a minute or whatever, to pick up your loot and if you don't want it everyone else can see it? (after time runs out) sounds reasonable to me!

My goodness, and my fortress, my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and He in whom I trust…
It's too bad about the health globes. I really digged the potions. But hey, it's Blizzard. They've never failed before, and I trust them to make an awesome game,

You hear Rob Pardo describing how "exciting" it will be to have to "fight the situation when you dont have health globes, so you have to use skills to jump around and fooling the enemies so you can get the health gloves".
THIS IS FREAKING UNBELIEVABLE. What a pile of crap design decision. Give me back my f****** potions god d*****!

What about healing skills? The paladin in Diablo II could heal his allies with auras and holy bolt, but he wasn't considered a healing class.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
i like the idea of getting my own loot, it will suck when someone gets something i want and they dont trade, but it goes the other way too, im sure i will find something good that i wont want to trade. as far as the health globes.. it sounds interesting, it will deffinately require more skill on the players part this time around instead of just standing in one spot spamming health pots.
...kinda reminds me of like god of war or something where you will be fighting a bunch of monsters and then right in the middle you will have to run off to the side and smash a barrel or something to get a globe then go back to fighting. that would suck, i hope its not like that. but in the gameplay video a health potion does drop, so they arent completely gone yet.
another thing im thinking of... it says health globes heal the whole party, well what if some douche WD... which he said is a frail char. gets hit hard and needs life and keeps jacking globes while everyone else playing smart doesnt need them at that moment but maybe later in the fight, but the guy already used them all... thats really gonna piss me off.
On the loot system, I think it's great because this time you can actually fight the monsters, and not your party members, for the best loot!:)
Although I agree with some other posters that there has to be some easier way of making items visible for the rest of the party, like a hotkey-and-a-click or something like that.
About the class-specific items, I have to remind you guys that they have barely finished the general idea for two (dos, deux) classes, and that nothing is final, specially when it comes to loot.
I am curious about the health-globe system... Will need to actually play it to have an idea of how it feels, but I am confident it will be good... or if not, we'll just scream our opinion to Blizzard.
Weird, it seems like i'm the only person who feels this system is the only flaw so far presented to us in the upcomming diablo 3, i used to love jacking items that weren't mine and just having a quick finger. There was alot of satisfaction toward picking up items as fast as you could after a baal run/meph run/ cow run and I would love to see them keep it that way... oh well i hope i'll get used to working for my items
^^agree, i mean there are good points with both systems but honestly when there's lag, or you have a slow connection, or someone is just plain faster then you, the d2 system sucks.
