Re: Torchlight/Diablo III Music

Btw in recent interview with Matt I read that he quit Blizzard because of how much time they wanted their staff to spend in house and I believe he wasn't from wherever "in house" is so he quit and chose to work with someone that are closer to his home. So at the time when Runic were looking for a sound guy, he was free.

Any idea who makes D3's music? I like it but it's a bit too in your face. But that may be just the trailer music. The part when the trailers end and D3 sign is showed - I LOVE the music and vocals there.

I found the quote:
Quote:
But the reason that I'm not working on it (D3) has nothing to do with me thinking it has any problems. I think it looks fantastic. I actually consider [Diablo III lead designer] Jay Wilson a friend. I thought he was immediately going in the right direction after he showed up at Irvine, which wasn't that much later after I did. But the main reason I'm not working on that is just the philosophy at Blizzard is very geared toward having people physically in-house on a full-time basis, and that's just been impossible for me over the past couple years. That's really 90% of what's happening there. It's just hard to make the in-house thing down in Irvine happen for me because I've been up in LA for my wife's career.

Tkrow, are you basing this opinion on the trailers and website or on playing the game (or at least the demo)?

I think Blizz should let him work from wherever he is and send the pieces in files to them at blizzard because he really is a mastermind when it comes to gaming music.

This is how most of the industry works... but then most of the industry hires freelancers rather than employing people. Blizzard are pretty unusual that they still handle their music design this way.

Re: Torchlight/Diablo III Music

Hey all..

Just reading over everyones posts, I must admit the soundtracks to d1 and 2.. particularly 2 is in my oppinion some of the best score work for a game of this genre ever, and in alot of ways both were larrgely succsessful to the work of Matt Uelmen. Obviously he wasn't the game but he certainly played a key roll. From what i've read on shack, and other resources, to me, when u get through the diplomacy, in a nut shell, Matt tells blizz he can do the work from a local studio or his home. blizz tells matt they would rather him do it @ their studios. matt probably agrees but for more money, blizz declines, matt takes offer on torchlight, which can I say is a great piece of work and I cant help but feel theres some overtones of musical revenge in there, almost as if to put what he had intended for d3 straight into torch. Alas the game though interesting and worth a look certainly won't be shifting my oppinion of diablo3 anytime soon. and 2 be honest, kinda looked a little crash bandicoot for liking.

On the topic of diablo's "new" sound, I think you'll find, even under the guidence of the great Matt Uelmen, towards the end of the rescent diablo chapter. The music begins to get very "in your face" as mentioned before or maybe less subtle.. more trumpets etc. - If you listen to the score work in LoD you'll find a big contrast to earler tracks. It has a much more, structured, symphonic sound where his previous works tended to be very atmospheric and dark ambience. So in that sense I don't think the natural progression of the feel of the diablo soundtrack so far has altered from that. It's mature while still sticking to it's roots.

Though I do think even for blizz's sake they need more info on who's putting it together, a new Matt Uelmen if u will.

Best D2 sound = Wooden club on head

I loved that sound I loved playing caster Druid and some Paladins only because they made that awesome club sound with the maces/clubs/scepters.
