Yeah, going left and right, exploring on your own and seeing what monsters you can handle is the best way to tell if you're ready for a certain biome. Like, if you get really good at the controls, you can probably go to the Jungle or even the Underworld and kick everyone's ass, even though it's gonna be kinda difficult.
If you can explore the Jungle (the one that has Piranhas in the water, Jungle Bats and Slimes, and Maneaters and Hornets underground) there's a very good chance you can survive in the Corruption already. There are some great items there, but you'll need a Nightmare Pickaxe (made from Demonite ore) to break the corruption tiles/blocks (ebonstone), or Bombs/Dynamite.
You can set your Spawn Point by crafting a "bed" (Cobwebs -> Silk, Silk + Wood -> Bed) and by using it (right clicking). You can make a house at the beach ( :P) and set it as your spawn point.
Monster shouldn't be spawning in your sky-house or even around it when you have some NPCs. Make sure you have at least 4-6 NPCs in it asap, and that the house has enough lightning around it and background walls.
Yeah ropes need to be attached to something - you can put them anywhere on your house and on the first level where there is "dirt" background, once it becomes stone the ropes have to be attached to a solid block.
Once they're attached, "using" more ropes on top of the one that's attached will "increase the length of the rope downward".. you can also make the rope grow horizontally by placing it to the "sides" of any part of the rope.
The "crafted rope" (the one that uses 10 rope parts) is thrown when used and can attach to things. It's a very useful tool even after you have a grappling hook.
Ice underground doesn't have better items than the Jungle underground (the green mean jungle with hornets and man eaters at least). I thought you weren't at that power level yet.
The Mining Helmet is really good for exploring, just remember that it has to be equipped in your actual Helmet slot in order to work (so you lose some defense and the "set bonus"), it doesn't work in the Vanity slot
So you have to consider the trade-off. Never having to worry too much about using a light source, against the fact that you are somewhat squishier.
Digging deeper is always a good idea Gold/Platinum ore becomes a lot more common the lower you go. Just watch out when you start seeing lava, as it's the last layer before the Underworld! And you're not ready for it, young padawan!
Also, the blue chests in the UndergroundSnow Biome have some sweet gear, might wanna start looking for those.
And use the Amethysts you've found to craft yourself your first Grappling Hook (needs 15, or some Iron Chains and a "Hook", this latter being a rare drop from Piranhas/Skeletons). E is the Grapple shortcut (doesn't need to be "equipped", just leave it in the inventory) and it's one hell of a tool for spelunking.
Glad you're starting to explore now, man Look for them golden chests, they usually contain awesome weapons and accessories. Probably the most important item that you wanna find at this stage is a Magic Mirror, so you can teleport back to your "home" without having to die (Esc -> Exit works too, though).
And surviving in caves is a matter of experience. Dodging monsters, seeing traps before stepping on them, exploring chasms without taking fall damage, are all things you'll learn in due time
Let me know if you want to play some more today. I'll be available the whole day.
On topic: What's the cost of this game? Sounds like I might want to try it out. I'm already done with Hearthstone, I guess, only debating with myself if I take the time to write down some feedback on it
It's 10 US$ (dollars). There was a sale recently where it was like 75% off, probably something like 2-3 dollars. If you're on EU, it's probably something like 5-7 €.
I've found out that checking online tutorial videos for Terraria or Minecraft doesn't really cut it, since there's so much underlying advanced knowledge and small tips/tricks that are important afterwards, and that you will only know when you're a more experienced player.
One of these is how king control is in Terraria (in particular), and how the natural caves that are created when the world is generated have some useful resources. Also, small control tips (like the contextual Shift + targetting) that will help on the long term.
The best way to start out these games (imho) is to do it with someone else. Once you're past a certain point, that's when you'll start discovering things for yourself and developing your own playstyle.
For the first night, if things go as planned, you can either start building a big shelter that will house NPCs (which will sell very useful things) and set it all up, or you can start digging downwards in hopes of finding some ore that will become your first pieces of gear.
If you're up for it, I'd love to play it with you and guide you through the early steps. If you just want to read the more important tips (and play on your own terms), let me know and I'll compile a (check)list of important stuff for days 1-5.
zero_ps is my steam talk to you there later... (I'll probably be on in about 3-4 hours, if I don't pass out from sleep)

I've got a couple hours now to play (2 or 3), then the rest of my day is gonna be somewhat busy too. What's your steam account?
