If you have Win Vista or up, you have to disable Windows Aero. Just make a shortcut to the game and right click > properties > compatibility and check the boxes next to "desktop composition" and "visual themes" I can't remember which one of those disables aero so just check both of them in case. That should fix the problem. If not, let me know.
