Respecs are here now in D2 so that the transition of it's implementation in D3 runs smoothly and ease out the possible qualms the "community" might have about it...
Consider it a test platform for what's to come.
No.
Don't bring that up AGAIN.
I'm aware not everyone wants to read through the whole topic... but damnit.
Also, please watch your trolling and off topic discussions, this is about respeccing, not who you think is or is not a "real" fan or player of the game, or infractions will be dealt out accordingly (that is not open to discussion).
I apologize for my attitude sometimes, but I don't have your level of control and just speak my mind no matter how bad it is. I'm saying that because I feel that was aimed particularly at me, since you erased one of my post and thats what it was about.

like i said no use arguing or even discussing it.
different values make our views irreconcilable.
maybe the system they implement can bridge our opinions.
Well, this discussion goes nowhere. People here are dead set on wanting things a way that cannot co-exist with the addition of respecing. There is little they can do to "bridge" opinions, as I believe "too little" or "too much" would not make one side or the other satisfied.

So, now I'm wondering what he means here. Does he mean only one of these options (2) will be limited and the other one not as limited, or they're both just as limited but... I don't know. Typical Blizzard crap, not telling you anything useful but just enough to mindfuck you
I -think- we are talking about 1 easy way, that can be mostly used to fix your build, not change it entirely, but easily accessible. So if you made a mistake going X skill and got 5 points in it, maybe you could undo just that.
And the other way, harder to get/more expensive that you can use to do a real respec, as in reset all your skills.
you feel wrong.... there are little to no flaws in diablo 2
seems like for the most part, people who have a problem with the game are playing non-ladder where all the duping/hacking/glitching is going on.
i hate you people, ruining it for the real players.
Get out of your hole a little. You are not a real player more than anyone else for any reason whatoever. Little to no flaws in the game? Oh god...
I understand and can show respec to those against respec etc... I mean, you can like something else. But that can of post just scream stupidity. If all you can do is blame others and claim its flawless, and that you are a "real player"... I'm sorry. Its just too much.
The perfect respec system wouldnt take any time at all to code. Its already in the game. Its called you screwed your character up, deal with it or make a new one.
Exactly, its an easy game, so why are all these people saying how awesome respecs are because itll make it easier for them? How much easier can you make it before its just boring.
Ok, seriously man, draw a freakin' line between EASY and TEDIOUS/LONG. Its not the same thing AT ALL. The game is easy respecing or not, having to spend hours more doesn't make a game HARDER.

If you know any online rpgs with better pvp that at least allows some leeway with killing people randomly when you feel like it, and lacks a monthly fee, please let me know, I'd like to try it out.
Seriously, try and seek The 4th Coming and Abomination server. Nothing but no life in a server about PvP where you lose ALL your gear on the ground for others to pick when you die from another person. No respec in this game. All "skill" and spending 20 hours a day to keep up with the others. I'm sure you'd love that.
hey odon
my main reasons for not liking it were on page 2 or something:
those two main reasons (CHARACTER IDENTITY and MEANINGFUL CHOICES) are terribly important for me, but they must not matter much to blizzard (or the playerbase majority they cater to).
i say that because in WoW soon there will be only one choice that is permanent, and that's class.
every single other choice can be changed: talents, gender, name, appearance, realm, and soon race and faction.
(i said that on the official forum as well, but i thought it might be worth repeating since it pretty much shows that what i value isn't something deemed valuable -_-)
but anyway just have to see how they implement it.
it's bittersweet but in a way i'm glad that fellow fans (like you) may be getting what they want even if i dislike it.
Well, in WoW there is little to no variations possible that work in a tree. So even if they had no respec, no one would really be unique anyway.
In the context I explained it, its one of D2's features a lot of other games lack, along with its style of characters being throw away and easy to remake, of course it doesnt make much sense when you cant understand it in the context of which it was given. Respeccing is just stripping away one of the games innovative features.
Its a flaw. Its bad game design. Its not a feature.

This explains a lot.
It explains that he doesn't just look up the best build on the internet and get away with it. The game promotes you in absolutely no way to actually make or attempt a build, and if you mess up you are punished and may never get through hell. Its quite ridiculous and such an obvious flaw in the game.
I also agree completely with edwith. A respec system done well can allow you to fix mistakes and can give you some freedom to adjust the build to your playstyle, without letting you completely change your character to something else.
I'm also sceptical on it's implementation, and I'll be honest, it's because of the way it's implemented in WoW. If they implement the system that works in WoW (and yes, it does work in WoW, in fact that game is unplayable without respeccing) it would ruin Diablo.
But, on the other hand, Blizzard probably knows better than this. It's not that I don't trust them, it's that the possibility (however slight) of them messing it up is frightening.
And the fact that many people on this forum seem to be hoping for a system where it's easy and costs nothing to respec, or it costs the wrong thing, also makes me skeptical.
A respec system is respec. There is no -fix this only- or that. If it doesn't allow you to reuse all your points like you want, then why do you call it respec if it doesn't actually allow you to do this?
Assuming they go through with it (which still isn't sure), I seriously wouldn't expect anything else.
5. Worst of all is people are comparing this change to WoW and GW. If you want to play World of Warcraft or Guild Wars nobodies stopping you, go play it. This is(was) Diablo2.
You don't dictate what is and what isn't Diablo 2. Get the hell out yourself and go play something else.

You can literally level a character to 80+ in a few hours of playing if you have some d2 friends that are willing to help, if not, go make a few, its not hard. If you ruin a character due to poor planning, too bad. Thats always been one of the objectives of the game imo, to tweak characters, experiment, and always try to make your next better then your last. Way to ruin this feature of the game and give every noob an easy fix button. Maybe some of the things that make this game unique and popular after such a long time should be left as is and not mainstreamed to be more like WoW or GW.
Sorry it bothers you so much. When all you do is get ran through the game and get your character to 80, you are not even fucking playing anymore.

i could not have said it better myself.....
this is test to see if it will work in diablo 3, we have to make it fail
It will fail for you and will stop you from playing both game before of the horrible close mindedness you have everywhere and your "hardcore" thinking. You'll just end up not playing either D2 and D3, thats called "your loss", none of the games will fail.
Since December I've been thinking that people were a bunch of perverts or something every time someone said this until I finally saw the video this is referencing. It wasn't really funny, but at least now I get the joke lol.
What?
Looks like I was in the same boat as you and you enlightened me
And I love this feature, by the way, even though I don't actually play online now. Posted the news in the News part of the forum but now one saw it. Didn't think of putting it there.
Oh, boy.
This deserves a lock.
No.
Don't bring that up AGAIN.

I'm sick of this. All you support is punishing people IN A GAME. That tells everything about your mindset. Its worthless arguing.

They are giving D2 respecs because they believe it is a good thing, plain and simple. No need for that "testing" theory that came out of nowhere.
