Sorry, but it´s not about being dark, and definitely not just about colors. It envolves the dynamics, the state of things, the disposition of the elements on the set, the set itself... everything. I think we could feel something similar in Diablo 2, specifically in act 1 and act 3, but not at the same level. And even in 3D they could still capture the same feeling as they did in Diablo 1. The graphics are very diferent, it´s pretty noticeable. And about reality, it´s really not supposed to feel realistic at all, I think. It´s a fantasy game.
Take a good look at Tristram (Diablo 1). Walk around the town. Go to the corners, where you don´t even have NPC. What is great about it is that they used a very cohese pallete color, so that you can feel a very strong mood about everything.
The mixing of the music and the colors, and the quiet environment, the very few people... That´s what makes Tristram... Tristram! Sadly we no longer see that, but hey, maybe they will create something even better in Diablo 3.
What I´m really talking about is Tristram from Diablo I, specifically. Take a look at the collors of the grass, the rocks, everything... It´s almost like a painting. It had a very strong mood about it, that Diablo 3 is certainly missing, because the collors are more generic, more common.
Since we´re going back to the Cathedral´s dungeons in Tristram, I wonder if we´re going to revisit any of the sections that appeared in Diablo 1, like the Chamber of Bone, for example.
I can understand what you´re saying, and Tristram looks great as a design concept, but definitely it doesn´t look as eery and gloomy as Tristram from Diablo I. It looks kind of cartoonish to me, and it´s a shame, really.
I could just hear Bashiok saying that the game needs to evolve, that they can´t use the same sceneries, etc. But this is not about making similar settings - it´s about inspiration, capturing a certain feeling.
I think that the Rogue´s Encampenmnet had that Diablo 1 feeling, although it strayed a little bit too far.
Maybe someone could post a thread about this to Bashiok. I´m quite sure he´ll say something inconsiderate back, but it could help the creative team to keep in mind about one of the things that turned Diablo into a huge success - the unique aesthetics of the game.
I was playing Diablo 1 the other day, and I came to the conclusion that Tristram is the responsible for giving that melancholic and slightly unsettling feeling about Diablo in general (wich is an unique and marvelous thing). Notice the colour of the ground, the quiet environment, the streams of water... all that complemented by the milestone music that inspired so much from the soundtracking of the series so far...
I wish Diablo 3 could come with something from the universe of Diablo 1. Of course, that´s just my opinion... don´t mind me!

I couldn´t agree more, Ycat!
