2. If someone like King Leoric had a strong enough will to not be fully possessed by Diablo, how on earth did the Hero get fully possessed? Wouldn't he have an even greater spirit?
At the time Leoric was "possessed", Diablo lacked physical form, as he was just released from the Soulstone upon Lazarus' shattering of it, and was thus too weak to take control of the king. Certainly had Leoric thrust the soulstone into his head or chest, Albrecht would not have been the host for Diablo.
Mephisto sent King Leoric and His followers to Tristram? i thought he was only a foreign king. Never thought they were unknowningly being sent to their very own enemy and doom
The manuals conflict on this issue. The manual for Diablo states that Leoric and Lazarus, as the king's "trusted advisor", arrived together in Tristram, and Diablo targeted the Arch Bishop first, thereby leading to the events of Diablo.
The Diablo II manual however, in the letter from Sankekar to Lazarus, implies that corruption by Mephisto was either fully effectuated or reached a level necessary to influence actions.
In an attempt to square them, I suppose it could be argued that Mephisto "influenced" Lazarus just enough to urge him south (?) with Leoric, who was a "deeply religious man" and would follow the command of the, unbeknownst to him, corrupted Order, into Tristram. Once there, Lazarus, who had already experienced a "darkening" of spirits, would be easily influenced by Diablo. Basically, Mephisto knew Lazarus would be less resistant to Diablo's influence and took advantage of the relationship between the Arch Bishop and future king in an attempt to free his brother.
In an unrelated matter, someone earlier inquired as to why King Leoric was targeted. I believe the Biblical quote in the margins of the Diablo manual answers this nicely; "To try to find strength in righteousness is folly. For He seeks to topple those who have the farthest to fall." Applying this quote to Diablo, it becomes apparent as to why Leoric was initially chosen. Realizing he was too weak to take the King, Diablo switched to Albrecht, presumably as an act of retaliation against Leoric.
