The barbarian in D3 is the same barbarian from D2.
That was planned when the game was first unveiled, yes, but they appear to have sloped that. There is no mentioning of anything the Barbarian did in the second game in D3, and I seem to remember a blue post at one point saying that they didn't want to give the Barbarian too much of a "unique" story compared to the other classes.
