I've just finished Act I of Torchlight 2 and I can honestly say that while it isn't necessarily better than D3, it is still well worth the money.
Storytelling, characters and quest dialog is nowhere near that of Diablo 3. Graphics are obviously much weaker and make you appreciate the things Blizzard has done with their title. And D3 has a more fluid and rewarding gameplay.
The things that are better are the things that make this game so much fun in the first place. Primarily - the loot, which is awesome and makes D3's loot seem extremely bland, offering you constant incentives to keep pushing on (hello actual set items and fun legendaries on low levels), and also all of the little things and side quests that you stumble upon when straying away from the road. Even though those are not very original, they still offer way more than D3 ever did.
Events are challenging, fun, and rewarding, but not really groundbreaking. Rare fishing spots draw you to stop with the killing and try to fish something awesome from within the depths. And monsters can be quite brutal, especially on the Elite difficulty. Skills and weapons offer some cool combos and effects (dual wielding wands never felt better), even though the system does feel kind of clumsy at times.
There is also a hilariously OP bug with the Embermage's Shocking Burst skill that practically makes you a God, destroying everything in your path.
Torchlight 2 feels like a classic action RPG, that never strays away from the roots of the genre. It is not a groundbreaking title, but it is primarily a fun one. It makes you keep playing by being engaging and making you feel there's always a cool new item behind the corner. It can be really hard from level 1, you can choose to play offline, in LAN or on the web. It offers what the fans of the genre have been asking for, and I would very much recommend it to anyone who likes these kind of games.
I prefer the graphics of torchlight to Diablo. Diablo, while it is supposed to be dark, takes it way too far. The game is just downright depressing to play through, especially when you get shit loot non stop for weeks on end.
As I said previously in my post moderators decided to delete for no good reason at all, I love D3. I am a huge fan of the Diablo franchise. But saying D3 is better than TL2 when you have yet to go through the entire game is pretty dumb. The game has more content, more endgame, more everything that D3. Unless of course you are basing your opinion 100% solely on the graphics, which is laughable.
The game rewards playing, I have yet to go an hour without dropping 2-3 legendary items. Levels are consistent, you don't hit a point where you have to play for 2-3 hours straight in order to ding a level. You can choose to play the hardest difficulty from level 1 instead of having to complete the game multiple times. You can go back through acts to re-clear and kill stuff. The side quests are 100000000 times better and more original than that of D3. The flavor text and story line are more clear if you played TL1 you should have no problems with it.
The boss fights are amazing in comparison to D3. Each boss, and each unique, has there own AI and scripts based on whatever abilities they have. You say they aren't groundbreaking? Well if you want to solely compare them to D3 they are definitely groundbreaking.
You have actual choices to make in building your character, something completely removed from the player in D3. And TL2 still allows you to test out skills since you can go back to town and undo the previous 3 spent talent points.
As to playing and controls, they are so much smoother than D3 its not even funny. Rubberbanding anyone?
Either way, I agree with a lot of what you said, but a lot of it is conjecture based on not even fully playing the game. Give it time before you make a statement like D3 is better.
As for me, I am undecided. So far I have enjoyed TL2 more than D3 by a rather huge margin. But I will hold off my final verdict until I beat the whole game and see whats waiting at the end.
But then again, this post will likely be deleted, so /shrug.
