I think they added that function because once you beat the game the first time, do you really want to be restricted to what you can do and use? Hell no! You want to be able to play with every single awesome Upgrade and Merc that you can!
I also think they assumed that nobody would want to play through the game 6 times to get all the Upgrade Achievements.
I'm about to head down to Char, and I've got everything upgraded, every MERC contract, and over 700,000 credits left over!
Wait, what? How did you do that? Isn't that impossible?
Actually no. Each time you go back through a level and you pick up the relics and research items, you get extra research points for the Zerg and Protoss upgrades in the Lab. Once you've researched all of those upgrades, the Lab turns the research points into $$$. So I played through the game for the second time on Normal up until I go down to Char, getting all the Normal achievements. Then I went back through again on hard in the same playthrough, getting all the Hard achievements. And now I have too much money. I averaged $170K from each mission, allowing me to buy literally everything with tons to spare.
Y'all can go ahead 'an PM me if y'all wanna add me as a frend in that there game. (said with an alabame white trash southern drawl)
I'm actually very satisfied with how WoL ended. It felt like it completed its part perfectly in the trilogy. I agree with arry, that all the real drama and crazy stuff will go down in HotS. I mean isn't that when all the crazy stuff happens in trilogies? "I am your father", "Gum wit me iv you won to liv", "Something's different... I can feel them" and who can forget "No, I know. You did send me back to the future. But I'm back, I'm back from the future.
But of course a lot of you make good points about not being able to play all the cool units, or use the cool upgrades in the multiplayer. I was shocked to find out that I couldn't build FIREBATS!! Really? Are you gonna do that to us Blizzard?
But yeah, I've almost finished the campaign for the second time. This time its on Hard, and I'm doing every single achievement. REALLY tough on some of them though. I'm about to head down to Char, and I've got everything upgraded, every MERC contract, and over 700,000 credits left over!
