I read on that google thing and one guy said that it may be like the Hunter's Mark. That might be it, sense I doubt you would be seeing someone else's rank unless you slected it and looked at it. (Like in Starcraft one. Know what I mean?)
Total Annihilation Kingdoms is the best RTS I have ever played.
I love that they are implimenting this system into SC2, its a great upgrade and awesome war tactic. Enemy thinks he's marching against 10 marines, so he sends 20 zerg. Only to have the 20 zerg be annihilated (no pun intended) before they can even lay a scratch on the marines.
Lol. My friends love Kingdoms, but I don't care for it. I much perfer the original, so much as to say it rivals Starcraft. (Mind you it was pretty well balanced -WHEN IT WAS RELEASED!- )
And yea, I can see the protoss gaining "rank", whatever that would be but what about zerg? How would they be balanced?
Maybe have them be recruits when they are first trained then after 10 minutes they become a private and after killing X amount of enemies they get a rank of which the X exponentially increases untill they reach the rank of E-4?
Then again maybe not...

Though I don't know if that's rank or if it just means they were selected. There was only 2 bar ranks which looked more like arrows to me...
